Movement

I don't think Hammond or Basham had particularly good games, but they were effective in defending the back four. Hammond at the side of Basham means we have two six footers in the middle of the park, and so the ball launched over the top of midfield is almost eliminated as we have players who can win a 50/50 header. Both can be physical as well, something we have lacked.

At Oldham last year, when Poleon scored twice, the Oldham manager and coaching staff kept shouting "height!, height!" and pointing to our midfield (Scougall, Holt, Doyle), as if if say, "they can't win anything in the air in midfield, keep chipping the ball over", Hammond and Basham negate that option.

Are you sure it wasn't "shite! shite!"? ;)

Movement and passing go hand in hand, and it's difficult to get things going if we're weak in either aspect. I don't think we had many phenomenal passers in the starting line up, and essentially not in central midfield.

We should be fair to Dean Hammond. Although he's come from the Premiership there's been nothing to suggest he'll be a great playmaker for us. In fact, fans of his previous clubs mention that as his weakness. There have been players in the past that have come from higher divisions and probably been expected to stand out. Players like Garry Flitcroft, Leon Britton, Paddy McCarthy did well at former clubs in certain roles, but all struggled to live up to expectations in a team that expected them to be good at things they weren't really good at.

The difference after Coutts came on was obvious. When he's in the mood, Coutts' touch, composure, vision and accuracy make opposition players struggle to get close to him. Fleetwood found out that when they tried hard, he'd just pass it on with his first touch and it was just a waste of energy. As they realised that, Coutts was given more time and space, and players started moving into space, not just coming short to help out because a teammate was in trouble. Coutts' playmaking meant we finally started get some flowing moves going.

But Coutts sometimes looks like he's 50 when he chases. In games, or roles, where he'll be required to cover a lot of space he'll be a potential liability. Adkins must agree with this, otherwise he wouldn't have kept trying to sign Hammond. Hammond looked rusty and not match fit, but despite us playing wingers and two strikers, he and Basham made sure that the opposition didn't run straight through us. In terms of protecting the back four, and getting away with the 4-4-2 formation Basham and Hammond could do well, but we'll have to see if we'll be able to play good attacking football and maintain our good scoring record.

Berg , possesion football IMO is not always the princple of pass and move . You can also work on that to keep the ball you have to play a simple pass and hold your position ( stay )

This is passing the ball until you find the right pass , so you pass the ball, but you are also ready in your tactical position.

This also means you dont expend too much energy running around , becoming tired and then more likley to make a mistake and lose the ball.

Keep the running to a minimum if you want to dominate possesion and the game.

I think overall ( may be totally wrong ) , but this to me is the type football philosophy Adkins is trying to instill .

Used by Albert Capellas at Barcelona .

Albert Capellas has never managed a senior side though, I see he's now an assistant coach at Brøndby, after having had the same role at Vitesse Arnheim? Maybe his philosophy is good for developing young players. As I mentioned I don't think the starting line up vs Fleetwood contained many great passers.

After a difficult start, Barcelona's Luis Enrique won the treble last season by making them play quicker and with better counter attacking. Adkins could look to him for inspiration.

This is a good one, huge stars, but watch their kid-like enthusiasm as they bomb forward when they have the chance. Cool to see their centre half Pique (no. 3) also joining the attack after winning two headers.

The lack over movement (at times) infront of the defence is so obvious.

I thought Hammond, whilst not having the best game, showed Baxter/Scougall/ Basham how it should be done.

I watched Basham quite closely in the first half v Fleetwood and he hardly ever positively shows for the ball and demanded it. He was often stood a couple of yards away from their man, what Hammond did well was drop 2/3 yards deeper, practically taking the ball off of the defender, turned and looked to move it on. Basham stood where he was, so that even if he got the ball all he could do was play it back or to the left back.Which is why for me Basham should be played CB.

It's so simple move to where you can receive the ball.

Our games teacher john draycott would shout for us to freeze when we were practicing. He would then walk round us and ask how the hell the lad in possession was going to get the ball to us if we didn't get away or find space. It is as simple as that so why don't professional footballers get it ? My guess is that they do but choose not to, I wonder why !?

I didn't see the man ure game but change the names Scholes is ranting about and it could be about us;
You look at the United team, there is no quality, no movement. People are not running. Is it the way they are told to play? It’s all safety playing across the pitch. I can’t remember a pass in to Wayne Rooney. There is no movement. You’ve got midfield players who can run – Ander Herrera, Jesse Lingaard, Anthony Martial – stick the ball into Rooney and run but there’s not one of them even thinking of running. Paul Scholes

I think one of our players' problems is confidence, which inevitably causes a mistake while we are playing sideways passes along the defence, then we let the opponents have an opportunity, that and the fact a couple can't play/pass when under even slightly pressure.

The guy with the ball never had any options. The forwards hide, never make a run and are seemingly scared to receive the ball.
It is ridiculous to blame the guy with the ball for his inability to find a forward pass or pass it backwards as he has no options.
The bloody players in front of the ball are statues, should grow some balls and show for it!!!

so are we ok to blame the player with the ball when he has 3 guys screaming for it in an advanced position and knocks it backwards?

Done and Freeman must have been hoarse from screaming for the ball on tuesday, when in good positions to get the ball forward, Che Adams was stood unmarked in the middle of their side of the pitch and rather than playing a straight forward ball, they... yup played it across the back and then wonder why the attackers are suddenly marked....

Given that there is a clear and obvious forward pass and they don't make it what do you suppose is their motivation for not playing it?

I am not quite sure if this is the answer to your question, but this is my interpretation of what you are asking

Their are only 2 motivators in football strong enough to make you do something you are not trained/instructed to do....

Money is one, this will usually drive you on regardless to do any thing you can to acheive that goal (this can be a positive goal or a negative goal)
Fear is the other, this usually prevents you regardless of instruction from achieving your goal,

if we have a team controlled by fear, then we are up shit creek without a canoe never mind a paddle....

I will get slated for this, but if you look at McEveley, people are on his back all the time, he still attempts that ball, he still tried to go forward, he isnt controlled by his own fear (that is why he was made captain IMO) others hear a grumble from the crowd and turn giants into mice...

the thing is, 95% of the time the crowd only grumble when we play the ball backwards all the time, when we go forward and it doesnt pan out the fans tend to applaud (except when its a McEveley ball being played I mean imagine the stick McEveley would have received if he had done what Wallace did yesterday running completely mistiming where the ball was and taking himself out of the game to let their right winger run unobstructed straight to our box.... I mean had that been JM at LB there would have been 20+ threads on how rubbish he was... yet I dont see a single one about Wallace... but anyway I digress)
