Hang on, Big Marts entitled to be wrong, it's a free world.

He is, but on here, he isn't entitled to call people names for having a differing opinion. This isn't a free forum but the rules are the same for everyone.

"Apparently" there's been loads of top teams wanting to sign him...........but none ever did, doesn't that tell you something?

Exactly.

Apparently once the mighty Bolton had abit of a look at Monty but that was it they had a look nothing more.

Monty will end up at L**ds regardless of if they go up or not I reckon.

So go on then, tell me why I'm given no respect?

Gary Speed has much more to his job than motivation.

Do you really believe his opinion of someone is based purely on making them feel good? is that why his fellow pro's felt the need to vote for him as their player of the year, simply to motivate him?

They should have let Big Mart vote,he seems to think he knows his stuff

Hey I have an idea. Let's get Tongey back and play him in the middle instead of Monty, cos he was always a brilliant player. He could tackle and pass the ball (sideways at least)...oh wait...he couldn't tackle.

Or...we could play Harper in the middle with Williamson because he has so much energy he can run around all day making challenges in every position on the pitch and then turn it into a counter attack...oh wait...that doesn't happen either.

Oh and while I'm talking about Williamson...well what is there to talk about? He's always injured.

But what if we bought that Lee Carsley and played him instead of Monty? He's 36 and has so much energy left in him. He can still run about alllllll game and play much much better than Monty. Oh wait...I've not really seen much of him to have that opinion. I'm pretty sure no one else has either.

People need to realise that many, many teams would love a Monty in their first 11. I'd even think about betting all my savings that if we asked every Championship manager the majority of them would say they'd want Monty in their starting 11.

Oh and one more thing...I bet it was Monty's fault we got relegated.

I see SoccerCynic hasn't re-appeared since he blasted this can of worms open again.

Was it a "light the blue touch paper" and fuck of to the pub scenario I wonder?

Don't think I've had so much fun since Bergen mentioned Monty in his breakdown of goals conceded.

I think players who can work as hard as Monty and play footie as well are world class.

Look at Bara against Arsenal, they worked to get the ball back so much more than we do and all their players are better footie players than ours.
Having a big heart is half the battle and skill is god given.

Yeah so much so no one has ever actually put a bid in for him.

We are hardly beating people off with a stick for his signature to the point that we can pretty much predict where he will end up if he doesnt sign a new deal.

QPR or L**ds.

Monty Issues - The solution

For those with a long enough memory, midfielders were often "paired" with another midfielder to make up the complete range of skills necessary.

There was a partnership who played for England and Manchester United in the 60's and achieved great things including winning the World Cup and winning the European Cup (as it was then). The two players were Nobby Stiles and Bobby Charlton. Nobby was a brilliant ball winner but couldn't pass water. Bobby Charlton could spray passes and had one of the best shots in the game but he couldn't tackle a hot dog. Individually they both had flawed elements to their game but when working together formed a formidable end product. Stiles' job was to win the ball then look immediately Charlton (who always made himself available close-by) and then make a simple short pass, Charlton would then weave his own magic.

Nearer to our own dear hearts Tony Currie wasn't too hot without the ball but Trevor Hockey was the ball winner who regularly fed the Messiah after breaking up an opponent's attack.

The point that I seem to be labouring to make is that Monty is a really good ball winner but the big trouble is that he hasn't a play-making pair mate. If people got off Monty's back and appreciated the top-class ball winning aspects of his game and concentated efforts to find him a suitable partner we could again see the improvement in results we would all love.

P.S.
In my opinion, the most effective partner he has had this year who did the "collect the ball and make good use of it role" was Glen Little.

My mate met Morgan, Monty and Cresswell in town the other night. He was chatting to Morgan for ages and asked Morgan who the players thought the best player at the club was, and Morgan said it was Monty without question.

True story.

I can well believe that. He is the sort of player that team mates & coaching staff absolutely realise the value of, but is under appreciated by the crowd. People bang on about his distribution, which isn't the best, but what he does off the ball is much more important. Opposition players will hate playing against him too. A really good player in my opinion.

For anyone who has ever played football in a midfield role you will be aware of how it is sometimes frustratingly difficult to play against an opposing player who adopts a high energy, headless chicken, willing to run through a brick wall to get the ball type of attitude towards the game. It's often harder to play against players like this than more skilled and controlled players who may back off you and try to predict what you are going to do instead of charging in all guns blazing and harrassing you.

Even though these players may not be the best when they have the ball at their feet they are still worth having in the team because of how they clog the opposition and stop them from playing. This is why Montgomery is important to our team, after all he only takes up 1 position on the pitch. It's no good having a midfield comprised of four ponces who aren't willing to get stuck in when we have lost the ball.

So what if he doesn't always make the right pass? So what if he doesn't score many goals? So what if he often horribly miscontrols the ball? These things are not what he is there for. It's like criticising Kenny for not scoring enough goals.

Thanks button. Nail on the head.

Bloody hell Grecian I started the thread because I think Monty has assumed an importance he does not warrant.I think it was a legitimate issue to raise. I did not know I had to reply to each contribution. I have not changed my mind as a result of the other opinions...he is still an average squad player and he worries me when he is sat in front of the back four. No-one has referred to my view that he concedes too much round our goalmouth and his rash and clumsy challenges can punish us. Guess no one agrees or no one sees it. I also think the club are happy for the Monty debate to rage as it deflects the shit away from them and do we really accept that if he signs an extension to his contract does it somehow demonstrate the greater aspirations of the club. Not for me no....it will just show our limitations in the transfer market and a lowering of expectations.

No I'm with you on this one. He has been an absolute liability this year. He been directly at fault for several goals and has put in a host of rash challenges giving away 3 penalties. It should have been 4 but the ref got it wrong aginst Swansea. Monty has had a poor season. It's all good and well saying that everyone needs a (poor mans) Dider Deschamps, but Monty has been a liability at times. A defensive midfilder who is there purely to break up opposition attacks could have prevented about another 10 goals this season by doing his job better. Simply not good enough.

Careful Olly, that`s far too close to the truth for those who believe in our midfield maestro.

If people think he`s our best player, a player we can`t do without, then we really have fallen into an abyss of mediocre standards.

SoccerCynic has a good point, he is not important to the Blades, in actual fact he is all a part of the non footballing ethos that warnock fell into at times, robson was clueless on & that blackwell takes to a fine art.... shit one dimensional kickathon football in fact

Yeah but he scored a goal this season so what you just said means nothing to some on here. lol

I think some fans like him purely because he is part of the furniture at the lane and overlook his flaws no matter how costly they can be at times.

I'm also with you on this one.

Running about and tackling doesn't make you a footballer, you can get any Tom, Dick or Harry fully fit and they could do the same job as Monty.
You need to be able to consistently perform the fundamentals of passing, control and heading and toblerone feet can't do any of these!!!!!

Completley agree.

As I have said before all you need to be to do the 'Monty' job is be fit enough to run for 90 mins and support united.

No footballing ability or brains are required.

hodgy your post is misleading to say the least.. the thing about the great norbert styles and indeed trevor hockey and his natural successor mick speight was that after winning the ball THEY WERE CAPABLE OF MAKING THE SIMPLE FIVE YARD PASS TO THEIR MATE.. not losing it again and chasing it again and winning it again and losing it again like a dog in graves park

hehehehe:D

The only shock on this thread is that pinchy hasn't contributed to it.

I'm far from it and the first to admit it. I respect the views of others when they are , not of brown noses nor sycophants, unfortunately some on here would fall into those two categories.
So he becomes judge and jury of what is actually 'deserving of that respect'. My you do have a high opinion of your self and to be so opinionated does that deserve respect?

Unfortunately, this isn't the forum for you then.

I take it that you failed to read the bit about "joining in with respect" when you signed up. It doesn't matter whether that's Foxy or anyone else.

Ah so Linz you finally noticed that this guy belongs with TEN

So all you Monty knockers know more about what he is REALLY like, and what his capabilities REALLY are - than his own Club Captain - a respected and experienced proffesional. (and from Guesty's post, Morgs views seem to reflect those of the wider team of pros too)

By all means have your own opinions - and fill up pages of the forum with them - - but I for one would rather trust Morgs views than yours. But if you want to continually prove how little credibility your views have - keep posting boys!

Unlike the opinion I have of you, which really would warrant yet another "Infraction" from the leadership, so maybe best for me to steer clear of having anything even bordering on a discussion with you sunshine
