Monty - Whats the fuss

For those with a long enough memory, midfielders were often "paired" with another midfielder to make up the complete range of skills necessary.

There was a partnership who played for England and Manchester United in the 60's and achieved great things including winning the World Cup and winning the European Cup (as it was then). The two players were Nobby Stiles and Bobby Charlton. Nobby was a brilliant ball winner but couldn't pass water. Bobby Charlton could spray passes and had one of the best shots in the game but he couldn't tackle a hot dog. Individually they both had flawed elements to their game but when working together formed a formidable end product. Stiles' job was to win the ball then look immediately Charlton (who always made himself available close-by) and then make a simple short pass, Charlton would then weave his own magic.

Nearer to our own dear hearts Tony Currie wasn't too hot without the ball but Trevor Hockey was the ball winner who regularly fed the Messiah after breaking up an opponent's attack.

The point that I seem to be labouring to make is that Monty is a really good ball winner but the big trouble is that he hasn't a play-making pair mate. If people got off Monty's back and appreciated the top-class ball winning aspects of his game and concentated efforts to find him a suitable partner we could again see the improvement in results we would all love.

P.S.
In my opinion, the most effective partner he has had this year who did the "collect the ball and make good use of it role" was Glen Little.

More modern day examples of this are Keane and Scholes, Makalele and Lampard, Mascherano and Gerrard and (my favourite) Deschamps and Zidane (for France). But Monty is certainly not one of the fantastic holding players that we mention above. I believe Monty does a job and we should concentrate more on who is partnering him than his limitations. if Quinn, Harper or Williamson had have done their bit then there would be less focus on this. If you play Monty (and there is a strong argument in favour of this) then you have to play a creative midfielder by his side to compliment him. Simple as.

All the above being said I think Monty has had a poor season. Yes he has won player of the year, but that is a mere reflection of how poor we've been this year. Monty is there to break up opposition attacks, stop the opposition scoring and protect the defence. Yet he has given away 3 penatlies (unlucky not to be 4) and made uncharacteristic errors that have lead to goals. In this sense he has been a liability and hasn't been doing what we pay him for. Still there is a call for keeping him as this just may be a purple patch of form. He was wonderful at times last year (play off final being one of them) and if he can reproduce this form then he'd be a real asset.

However we've completely got away from the point of the thread. Although it was inevitable that this thread would turn into a debate on Monty's ability, it's actually about whether we should keep him or not. Soccer cynic was merley asking stating that he didn't think it would be a big deal for Monty to leave IF Monty has assume a higher importance than the club. If he is demanding premiership wages or wages higher than united can afford to pay (which appears to be the case, but isn't certain) then what should we do? Without being a fly on the wall (in wage negotiations) then it is difficult to comment. If Monty is not taking in the bigger picture, think he is bigger than Sheffield United or is pricing himself above us then maybe we should allow him to leave. It would be a shame (to some) to see him go.

monty is at the end of his contract.. we always get all of this guff about 'ooh the other players say he is the best player'.. 'ooh lampard/gerrard/ pele/ whoever reckons monty is the best midfielder in the world' and what have you..it is agent hype

Unlike the opinion I have of you, which really would warrant yet another "Infraction" from the leadership, so maybe best for me to steer clear of having anything even bordering on a discussion with you sunshine

Shame you have to add the 'sunshine' bit, sums you up really and im bigger than you:p

After all we've been through on this subject and you cannot shut up about him. tut tut. it is funny though.

So now I'm not allowed to post any comments on threads that are about Monty? Come on Boo, stop being a silly billy.
