Mo Besic

My thought. Money, we will presumably save a couple of quid by sending him back and, possibly if he's out of contract in 4 weeks get him back on much less than we are currently paying.

He has a year left on his contract.

Don't see what the problem is here - if Besic doesn't want to sign an extension then so what.

Would we have actually signed Besic in the first place IF we had landed Berge last summer?

Whilst I can understand CW wanting to keep Besic until the end of this extended season, for me Besic would have NOT been signed next season anyway. He's an OK footballer - he's with us because he's not been good enough to get in an average Everton side for a number of years.

Some might judge him as a squad player - not sure Besic wants to be a squad player - he's been one of those for ages at Everton and ourselves this season.

Footballers want to play - or they should - let him go back and get a transfer for next season where he can play for someone most of the time.

We're in a much better position now to attract better players. Move some of our average players on and get a couple of quality players to go straight into the first team for whenever next season proper starts.

I can't be bothered to read the whole thread, but I'm sure I read recently that Mo had 'been sent back to Everton", however he's seen in this recent vid! 🤔

I think it's "will be sent back to Everton", his contract doesn't expire until the 30th, so he might get another game for us and then bugger off if we can't sort it.

Real shame if he doesn’t stay.. really rated his performances.

Body language/lack of team closeness on his part in February unfortunately suggests departure time unless a change

Would have loved to have kept Besic, every time I've seen him play he's been fantastic. Unfortunately for him, the defence has been so immense we haven't really needed that last ditch tackle in defence that he offers so well

From a Richard Sutcliffe piece on The Athletic today:

"Talks to extend the contracts of those such as Phil Jagielka and Leon Clarke, whose deals were set to expire on June 30, are ongoing, and Wilder made clear recently he envisages no problems. Ditto the loan stays of Dean Henderson, Panos Retsos and Mo Besic."

Hope so... really rate Besic and would be an excellent sub option at worse, especially with increased number we can now use.

I almost spat my coffee when I read "new contract for Leon" before reading the rest of the sentence.

Zivkovic??

Zivkovic??
Wasn’t the Zivkovic loan for a year? The Chinese league starts in February so I imagine his loan does not expire on June 30th like most European loans. Could be wrong but I’m sure Wilder made a lot of Zivkovic‘s need for a pre-season before he was ready.

Leon will feature between now and the end of the season, and he will bag one. I can feel it in me watters.
He bags the winner against Man Utd.

I can think of few things that would give me more pleasure than Leon scoring for us in the Prem. Pray to whatever gods you fancy that this will be so.

I don't see Leon getting anywhere near TBH. We have Ollie/Billy/Moose/Didsy/Richie ahead of Leon. Even Tyler Smith seems to be getting a look in.

You know Leon was an inch away from scoring against Liverpool , we just might need him , remember we have 3 matches in, is it 8, days first off .

I've seen Leon score enough goals to know he knows where the goal is. Not saying start him every game, but I wouldn't baulk at him being on the bench at all if fixture congestion starts to bite (assuming he's kept himself right in the shutdown), big guy on as 5th sub to cause a bit of a headache for the oppo defenders, why not?

I don’t mind us letting Besic go, and I don’t really mind us not signing him next season. However, I’m surprised that we haven’t taken this option to extend his loan for this period.

If you think about it this way, we have 9 on the bench, say we have Berge, Fleck and Norwood as our midfield 3 and we are going into the 70th minute of a game 1-0 up, midfield legs are tiring, who do you want in our squad to bring on to sure things up? I can’t think of anyone better than Besic for this specific job. Perhaps Wilder now sees Retsos as this player for this particular role.

Lundstram? I don’t mind Besic but he’s a red card waiting to happen.

Yes possibly – when he joined, Wilder suggested Retsos could also play RWB and in midfield. He came on in midfield in the Cup at Reading in extra-time – it was a bit of a chaotic cameo if I’ll be honest, but hopefully that was more down to the unfamiliarity with our shape.

While Besic’s status is still unconfirmed, I’ll just reiterate what I said before that given the next few weeks are unpredictable in terms of how players will handle it physically, and what sort of niggles they may pick up, we lose nothing really by keeping him in that time in case Lundstram or Berge pick up an injury – and by the sounds of it, Berge’s already missed some training due to a minor one.
