Won't say who or where but we had a chat about the place we were in, football and SUFC obviously.

I said at one point, "Well, anyway, we have Cloughy for next season."

He said, "I wouldn't be too sure about that." The way he said it surprised me and I could tell he meant it.

I didn't dare ask him exactly what he was getting at - bit to much to ask I thought and anyway he was out with his little boy.

I understand from elsewhere that JP is over soon so it may be a case of watch this space, or same owd, same owd, who knows?

Interesting times but I hope we know one way or t'other next week

It may well be that the player in question , you were having a chin wag with , is black listed and on his way out of the door . If so , he wont be having Cloughy next season, but we will

Also its Gaffer , or Mr Clough:D NOT Cloughy.

I pay his wages and I'll call him what I like!

Well, a tiny bit of his wages ;)

Summat or nowt.

Haven't we all been having the same conversation on this forum since dinosaurs walked the earth?

Why would Player X know more than anyone else? I can't imagine he's been taken into anyone's confidence.

Not dismissing it entirely but atm I can't see how he'd be any more in the know than anyone else.

And I'd've thought if the Board were going to sack the manager they would've done it by now.

And the manager has already made decisions about next season which would they let him do if he wasn't going to be here?

Balance of probabilities is definitely in favour of him being here next season. Intit?

The player probably hasn't been taken into any confidence but if enough of the squad have voiced their opinion about matters to the powers that be then that could have generated enough speculation within the squad to cast doubt over Clough's future.

And what decisions has Clough made about next season?

For me there's no smoke without fire, there is enough to suggest that the jury is still out.....

You've not learned much from following our comedy farce of a club!

I really don't think Phipps and Co would get rid, reading into everything he's tried to put out, coupled with NC already being allowed to start reshaping the squad in terms of the retained list. Could it be that NC might resign? For all we know he could be desperately unhappy with how everything has gone this season. I'm sure I saw him interviewed earlier this season about management where he basically said he doesn't enjoy the 90 minutes due to the stress involved. Perhaps when you add up everything that's gone wrong this season - from the issues with Collins/Baxter, not getting his targets in the summer, the Evans fiasco, O'Grady being recalled, the injuries, ref issues, individual errors, the constant questioning over his selections - maybe it's all got to him and he's decided he'd be happier away from football? Just a thought.

The majority of the retained list would probably have been decided months ago with a caveat for which division we were in....

I certainly think he had his rose-tinted specs on when he came.

I'll bet there are times when he wonders what the hell he's got himself into.

Indeed. Just to add to my reasoning above, I am almost certain that when he was first linked to the job there were sources close to him suggesting that he wasn't going to take it because he was wanting a break from football after his experience at Derby. Perhaps he's now wanting to revisit that.

For me this was the more likely interpretation of said conversation as reported. Jumping rather than being pushed.

But Clough also seems to have committed to next season.

So istm the most likely explanation is neither.

What would the players say, "excuse me Mr Phipps, I wish to complain about Mr clough. He keeps on picking me and my mates and we're shit !"

Anyone believe that a player would know what the hierarchy are planning to do before the manager did?

Depend who the players is , and which club . Board members do ask senior players there thoughts on managers . Some clubs do have player power . Easier to sack the manager than players . No player power at the lane . Clough would not allow or tolerate it . Think Butler , Collins.
