I can't believe it's 16 years either.

I still remember the game against liverpool at the lane (might have been his debut) like it was yesterday, quite possibly one of the best goalkeeping displays I've ever seen along with Alan Kelly (ireland v holland) at anfield.

RIP Mel

I remember that game too, he was incredible.

It's a horrible thought, but would we have ever gone for Kelly if mel hadn't been ill?

I wish I was at that Everton game. Sounds fantastic.

20 years next year then, we need to give him a good tribute. Suggestions anyone?

Everton away was a superb game and a great away day, topped off by an unbelievable performance.

I think the Inter Blades used to run a Mel Rees Memorial Tournament. It woudl be good if the club gave it more exposure next year and invited a big turnout of local teams.

On the back of the Goal Keeper shirt under the collar hem, at the top of the spine should be embroidered "Mel Rees 1967-1993" quite small but big enough for us fans to know its there.

I used to see Mel walking round Carlton in Lindrick with his mate Steve Parkin (ex Dingle boss).
He used to always smile and say hello.
Really nice guy - I am another that remembers his walk round Wembley that day.
Even the pigs showed humility that day. Everybody saluted him.

He pulled off some blinding saves in his short time with us.
Good bloke gone too soon.....

RIP MEL

Named my son after him. Well his middle name is Rees.
Thought it was longer than 16 years ago tbh.

Best keeper i have seen in a blades shirt.. RIP

I remember people tlaking about three international class goalkeepers. I'm annoyed about not being able to remember much about his walk around.
RIP Mel

Tracey was never international class, unless he could have qualified for Scotland. :)

I did not say he played internationals and if he did it would have been for England.
Why start an argument in a discussion about one of our dead heroes?

Indeed a very moving moment in Blades folklore was the walk around the pitch at Wembley.

We saw Mel too briefly in a fleeting cameo of what could have been.

I'm proud to have played in the Mel Rees tournament.....although this forums team got the wooden spoon!

Great that we have the memories though!

Never forgotten!

:)

Who's arguing? You talked about people talking about all three of them being international class, i'm just saying that Tracey wasn't.

I think it's 19 years.

I know his dad and brother still come to the Lane every now and again even though they're Cardiff fans.

Named my son after him. Well his middle name is Rees.

It was 19 years ago yesterday, his Dad and his Brother, Stephen, usually attend a game once a season.

Great bloke, great keeper and a great loss. RIP Mel.

My daughters middle name is also Reece but after a different Blade ,my personal hero .

21 years today.

RIP Mel.

As dome have said great debut v Liverpool at home (over shadowed by a great goal and performance by Deano) then a superb performance away at Everton in a 2-0 win.

Great keeper, so sad he passed away so young with many years a Blade ahead of him.

Lit the place up with some outstanding performances.

The one I saw at Goodison being among the best I have ever witnessed.

Gone too soon.

RIP Blade.

Yes, 3rd choice I think. Tracey and Phil Kite were both injured.
Not really 3rd choice. We signed him from WBA for £25K two days before the Liverpool game (his debut). Tracey was injured (at Chelsea in a clash with Dennis Wise a week earlier) but I am not sure about Kite (I do think he was injured too)

Kite was injured. He would have played if fit, as he did in the cup game at Chelsea a month earlier whe Tracey was injured.

If Kite was fit, we might not have signed Rees so Rees wasnt really "third choice"
