30 years ago of yesterday Mel passed away aged just 26. R.I.P Mel.

Great goalkeeper who died far too young. Just think we had him, Kelly and Tracey at one point!

Never forget him being at Wembley for the Semi Final. You just wonder what he would have gone on to achieve but for that wretched disease.

Bassett did really have an eye for a great keeper, Mel was fantastic for sure and to say he only played a fee games he became an instant favourite that is still the case today for fans from that era like me. Such a shame he passed far too young.

Just a handful of games ! We never got the chance to see what he could acheave.
He looked to have a great future only for it to be taken away by illness.

I remember his debut. An absolute unknown keeper playing against Liverpool, and he was brilliant.

I was right behind the goal for that. Wasnt it a save from Stuart 'Tracey' Barlow's header? Somehow he flicked it up and over the bar.

It was the equavalent of what Seaman did vs Pesch, only 8 feet in the air and thus that much more difficult to pull off.

Difficult to compare. The top sides didn’t seem as far away in quality back then. I don’t remember us being completely dominated in any games in that period.
