Collins is getting most of the blame for Sat. He's been knocked for having a go at Long etc.
However where was McEverly. He's the captain, he should be organising the defence. Maybe it's a sign Collins wants it more.
I haven't seen the match but Collins has always been an average CB at this level, not a terrible one as I would think after Sat. Surely he hasn't completely lost it.
Also it must be very difficult playing along side an awful CB such as McEverly. So my plan would be if McE. Has to play, move him to left back and give Collins a chance with the new guy.

The worst thing is, him being captain means we'll likely see him at LB even when Harris returns.
And I'm Harris' biggest fan so I'm biased, but surely even his doubters would prefer to see him there with half a leg than McEveley??

JM really is dog shit.

I'm guessing J-Mac will be Edgar's partner at CB.

The best solution so that he remains captain, Adkins doesn't lose face, and he is no where near the first team is to put him in the pirate suit to entertain the kids.

The goals were down to Long really.

McEveley did have a go at him at one point and didn't generally seem suited to the role of captain in terms of inspiring and marshalling the players.

But the organisation at corners is sorted before the game so he doesn't necessarily have to do that. Does he?

On the playing side what did he do wrong? Genuine question.

It'll be Mceverly over Collins

Disagree. Think Mceveley is a good centre half (in League 1).

He started playing LB for us last year and was truly garbage. Then we had a run of results (October/November I think) where we settled on J-Mac and Bash and centre halves where they were excellent together. They also played together in the cup run to my memory too. McEveley is not a bad defender at all, maybe he had a bad game, but would still be decent with a more regular and reliable partner.

As I've said on another thread, we can't judge the defence too harshly with the formation we're playing. 4-4-2 offers no protection to the centre backs and when we have a kid in goal, a kid at full back, 2 attacking wide players and Bash and Baxter in centre mid, where are the CBs meant to get protection from?

The problem goes much deeper than just Mceveley or the combination of him and Collins, we need a new shape and a more settled side to see the best of our captain IMO.

All of the goals were from set pieces bar one... The amount of protection the defence got mattered none for 3 of the goals.
The captains job is to organise the team at set pieces, he couldn't organise an orgy at City Sauna.

Nah Mceverly is definitely getting most the blame

So you didn't see the game but thought you'd dig McEv out anyway?

Does it make him a better player if we spell his name correctly?

Oooh, yeah baby.
It's all about the confidence.

Is it? I thought the players were given their jobs before the match.

I was out with mates on Saturday and we were talking about our bets for the respective league winners.

At this point I will point out I live in Derby.

One lad said he had us down for league one and when I told him we had JMc as our captain and starting CB I didn't know whethe he was going to punch me or cry.

Just wonder if Adko's going to emulate his predecessor in being a stubborn SOB, entrenched in his viewpoints?
Or could he acknowledge that there may well be a case for reviewing the enormous faith he placed in the derided JayMac following Saturday's debacle?

We all make mistakes & all that.

What would a fair assessment of McEveley's performance on Satdi be?

Long was at fault for the first two, and maybe bc of the jitters he spread, the third as well. The fourth was a team effort with three failed tackles and three not closing down the shot.

I saw a couple of things he did wrong - one of which was extremely poor.

So far though most of the posts are just assertions that he's crap with not much supporting evidence.

There seems to be an element of scapegoating.

Was McEveley noticeably worse than anyone else?

He was captain of a side favourites to win the division which capitulated embarrassingly at unfashionable Gillingham. A side lacking "heart" according to Chris Basham.

Surely he doesn't deserve an easy ride in circumstances like these?
