McAtee pants down

No, but the original poster of this thread did.

And, by the way, the idea that he’s ever looked like he wouldn’t make it in the men’s game was miles off, too.
Ah, OK.
I'd respectfully disagree with your second point though.
His youtube snippets looked really good, but they weren't week in, week out Championship games.
In a number of games, he looked well out of his depth and showed it with his immature frustrated responses.
Yes, he looks like he's developing into a very good player, but at the time of me saying 'thanks, but no thanks' I felt he was so way off the mark, we'd be better off sending him back and swapping him for someone else in the JTW.
I guess I was only out by a couple of weeks or so ;)

I’m not denying he struggled at times and has been on a steep learning curve. For me that’s very different from implying the kid has no future as a pro.

If the OP of this thread had said “he’s looked a bit out of his depth and will need to improve if he’s going to have an impact here” that would’ve been fair enough. If you’d said “he hasn’t contributed as much as we’d hoped” than that’s also fair enough.

It’s when people over-generalize (“not ready for the championship” or “no future in the game”) from a small sample size that it gets a bit silly.

Think a lot of it is mental.

You can see McAtee growing in statue, his confidence's is growing and he now demands the ball and looks to do something with it.
To be honest he's starting to over shadow Berge, so well done and keep it up.
It's nice to have 2 players (N'Diaye and McAtee) with a superb 1st touch with close control, ability to dribble and pass.

So was he shite or not ‘at the time?’. And If he was, when many thought he’d walk this league, why wasn’t it fair?

What’s not fair is some attempting to re-write what’s been an accurate assessment, based up until 4 months of the season and deny you ever had splinters in your backsides.

He’s improved, great, it’s the least we expected, no? I’d have more time for people who are willing to stay he’ll be a guaranteed 1st team starter between now and the end of the season and score /assist x goals. Any takers?

Shite at the time - maybe.
Dumb to be writing him off after a game or two - definitely.

Even when he wasn’t affecting games he’d still show the odd moment where he’d glide past a defender or shape a shot with his left. So the idea he was ever a write-off at this level was just knee jerk rubbish.

Given recent improvements it’s nice to ponder how good he could get this season. But if stays at today’s level for a decent length of time he’ll be absolutely vital to us.

It's expected that a player out on their first loan isn't ready for the pace and physicality of the EFL. The kid still needs rotating as he isn't a 90 minute player, but he's improving nicely. We could use a midfield lian to n January to flesh the squad out. And a number nine.

Very good on the ball, coming along with the defensive parts more and more. Illiman must be a rolemodel for him, he's defending from the top like a madman. It's so easy to judge players only on the ball, but the heavy work is beeing part of the team when the opponents are on the ball, this is his most improved part. As Hecky says, can't carry passengers when defending.

McAtee was classy yesterday in a well balanced side.

Get McBurnie back in to lead the line with Ndiaye and I think we have a side without weaknesses and tonnes of energy

Man City fan here. I have been lurking for a while and hope you don't mind me posting. I saw a lot of McAtee (and Doyle) at EDS level and he always stood out amongst a very talented group. It has not surprised me that it has taken him some time to adapt to senior football as many of our other academy lads have struggled making the step up. Tommy Doyle spent the first half of last season on the fringes at Hamburg before doing better at Cardiff and currently Liam Delap, son of Rory of long throw-in fame, is struggling to fulfill his potential at Stoke.

The loans of both players seem to be turning out well for all parties. It is great experience for our lads to be at a team that is battling for a big prize. We also have Taylor Harwood-Bellis at Burnley and Callum Doyle at Coventry so lots of interest in following the Championship this season.

I am currently in the slightly bizarre situation of rooting for Burnley due to their manager being a City legend but it would be great if both you and they get promotion. Good luck for the rest of the season.

Think the article talking about him being a starter for city next season might be a bit premature even if he finishes the season playing out of his skin and I hope he does. He’s starting to prove he’s a cut above the championship if he can keep up current form but to get in City’s side you have to be a cut above the prem. He probably needs another year of seasoning at the level above hopefully with us again.

Very interesting, consistent with what many fans here feel to. In regards to our two city loanees have they any chance of making the city squad next season from what you've seen?

Bear in mind that the last time we took on a hot young talent was Ben Woodburn from Liverpool and he was surprisingly poor.
Like a rabit in the headlights, low confidence and hardly played for us and every time he came on as sub you could see he couldn't adapt to the Championship level.
So when we heard great things about McAtee...there were plenty of Blades thinking...."probably another Ben Woodburn".

Update on your players:
Doyle is more of a consistent engine room type of midfielder, decent with the ball but also excellent without the ball.
He doesn't stand out as anything special but he's a solid 7 out of 10 most matches.
He's an asset at Championship level but due to his style of play but I'm not sure he's anything special for PL level.
Not seen anything to suggest he's good enough to play for Man City, good all-round player though so maybe we can sign him?

In early matches McAtee did the odd trick and flick but was generally ineffective, also he looked poor when out of possession.
He came across as more of a show pony flair player with potential but didn't like defending/ tackling.
His 1st start was away at Luton and he very much looked like a lost little boy playing against the men of Luton.
Hence the early comments from our fans that McAtee won't hack it at this level, yes, he might have some talent but there's more to football than mere talent.
However gradually he's improved his performances, worked harder when out of possession showing fight and effort, this is a good way to win over our fans.
His general games were pretty average but we noticed he'd pop up with a moment of skill/ class to create clear goal scoring chances.

However in recent matches, he's slightly improved again, his confidence must be growing because he's now seeing more of the ball
and playing like a poor mans Phil Foden, good 1st touch, nice awareness with good passing but what makes him stand out is
like our other player, N'Diaye he's capable of short busts of speed and dribbling past defenders causing panic.

The beauty for Sheff Utd is we can be playing quite poorly in a match but N'Diaye and McAtee are 2 players who might also be playing poorly then they'll produce a moment of PL level skill/ class from nothing, dribbling past their defenders to set up a goal.

As mentioned above McAtee is currently no where near Man City level. He's just an above average Championship player with moments of quality.
However he's gradually improving each match so it does make you wonder what his ceiling is and where his improvement will end?
Towards the end of the season he might end up being one of our star players and far too good for Championship level.
