Mcatee hate

That's the reason city sent him to us not only to play in a side that's skillful and free flowing but also to play against teams like Luton, mcatee would've learned more about where he is in his career last night than he ever would in a string of 5 nil wins, if hes clever, and I believe he is, that game alone will make him a better player, and I also believe that when city get him back they will have a player who is a million miles closer to first team action than if they'd have left him getting all the plaudits in u23 football

He basically got "blooded" last night and Hecky sorted it at half time anyway. It's a long season he will develop and gain experience he was sent to us for development not as a ready made first teamer like others. No doubt he will play a part later in the season.

I don't know where the hate is, saying he had a shocker is fair criticism but was Luton away the game to put a young kid into the firing line? Maybe with hindsight Hecky might have started Doyle and left Berge as our forward midfielder. You can't put a kid in a position where he is going to struggle physically especially when you have to move a talent like Berge out of his best position to accommodate him. All last night did for McAtee was welcome him to real men's football where he will have to earn the right to show off his talent.

Mcatee worst player on the pitch so far

McAtee struggling

McAtee will be useful with his quality but it's not a correct selection for Luton away

Doyle CM and Berge further fwd would have made much more sense

Need to take him off or he's getting sent off, so far off the pace

Mcatee is not a scrapping midfielder. I am sure that he'll show quality in the right position, but this isn't it.

Hecky should have used McAtee for home games where he'll have more time with the ball.
Wouldn't Doyle have been better for this game?

McAtee is being used in many of the set pieces, however his dead ball play has been generally poor so far.

Seems to be struggling with the speed of the game.

Observations ..............Mactee gerrim off he is havin a shocker,Basham worries thr shit out of me when facing crosses from Luton.

Why is Anel not starting ?

McBurnie,McAtee & Basham off at half time please FFS.

Mcatee needs taking off, he looks lost, put doyle on and push berge further up

Bit of a street brawl this and Luton have the necessary thugs
Referee a bit lightweight
Mcatee a bit lightweight, and needs replacing
Blades been terrible at stopping crosses
Freeman having a blinder
Sander not been in it at all

Dreadful stuff.
Mcatee needs to go off at HT.
Brewster for Mcburnie.

Hecky's selection , shape all wrong for this game.
Then we're getting mullered + he does nothing about it.
Obviously McAtee having a mare , on a yellow, should be hooked.
Very poor Hecky , we are going absolutely nowhere

Fucking shite first half…get McAtee, McDonkeyand Basham off

Doyle Anel and Brewster on for second half

McAtee gone full metal Ben Woodburn.

He has ben lucky not to be sent off, but I don't think we'd notice the difference. Terrible performance. Weak, slow, sloppy, dire corners, can't mark or track or tackle. Jesus wept. He'll be back at school soon, thankfully.

Otherwise. Berge. Poor defensively. Slow and weak. Takes the easy route. Norwood sloppy with the ball. Lowe terrible at stopping crosses. Stands far too far off his man. Baldock not much better.

Terrible marking for their first. They had a free header (Basham at fault) and shot. The three CBs need to get a grip. Second to everything.

We've been bullied but they're far quicker moving the ball than we are.

Get McAtee off before he's send off due to laziness. Get Doyle on. Shout at Berge. If no better after 10 minutes stick another striker on. we need to push them back.

McAtee looks shell shocked, he's got to come off
They've battered us, Morris 10 times the player Mc b is
Freeman played very well

McB McAttee Bash off please. Doyle Brew and Anul has to be.

Would like to see a positive approach from Hecky, 2 or more halftime subs needed here. James McAtee doesn’t exactly scream Luton away, Bash looking rusty and has been dominated in the air.

McAtee for Doyle
Bash for Ahmedhodzic

Push Berge further forwards.

In the interests of Science I picked out the McAtee comments from the match thread.

Over all - with one glaring fuckwitted exception - they seem fair.

I read these as generally supportive. He obviously had a mare, I imagine he knows that, but it's a test of character, and we (and Man City) hope he'll come good. It could be an important game in his development.

The real vitriol was in #shitbox. Clutch of wankers that lot.

Given young uns are addicted to social media he'll probably read this. There's no hate. He had a bad night. Nothing more.
It's all part of the learning process. He's an asset i'm glad we have. We move on. He moves on.
If you have no sexual partner to lay besides tonight i guess it''ll play on your mind a while.
I only have a cat but i'll get through somehow.
#PrayForKnowsnowtsCat 🙏

Do you ‘get through’ a cat each / every night?

I don’t like to criticise poor performances, they happen to every player. I really felt for him yesterday, it’s Heckys job to introduce him to the mens game in the right manner and l was absolutely by the decision to pick him for Luton away. I’m a big fan of Heckinbottom but last night was a joke, the lad deserves better.

Hecky made a blunder in his starting lineup, Luton is not a team for a young McAtee. Hecky would not have known beforehand that Webb would not protect his players. Luton saw how weak Webb was as a ref and took full advantage. On another day, on a bigger pitch with a real ref that game would not have played out as it did.
McAtee will have his chance against a footballing side not one from the rugby league.

A lesson for you Ned , don’t listen to them negative twats on the match thread … they are all thick!
Just laugh at them.

Young lad who got bullied by much more experienced players. Nowt to be ashamed about, all part of the learning curve. He’ll be a better player for it in the future.

We’ve seen how good he can be against Sunderland. Lad needs some time & experience to get going. He’ll get plenty more opportunities this season to show what he’s got.

No hatred at all.
You're over-reacting.
This was NEVER a game to start him.
Should have been Doyle.
That stupid decision was Hecky's.
Hecky knew what to expect from Luton but picked the wrong midfielder.
Doyle may not have been ready for 95 minutes, so it made sense to use him in the second half.

Surely he is better playing his first full match away than having to cope with a full house at BL ?

He had a stinker. Nothing came off for him. He looked lost and way off the pace.

The disappointing thing for me is the way his head went. He looked a bit stroppy with our players and then petulant, almost getting himself sent off. He started lazily kicking the ball away under no pressure and then hitting the first man with corners as he wasnt concentrating / trying. He needs to cut that out immediately and learn to roll his sleeves up and fight.

My fear is that he's so used to playing in Man City teams that dominate possession that he has no idea how to play without the ball.

He's only 2 games in and he showed plenty of talent, on the ball, against Sunderland. It may transpire that he's a bit of a luxury player to use off the bench when we're on top in games but struggling for a breakthrough.

However, there's abolutely no way anybody should be writing him off and it's disappointing (but unsurprising) to see some of our fans scapegoating him. Let's wait and see how he responds. It will say a lot about the young man.

Hecky was right to pick him, the lad will have learned a lot from last night and hecky will have learned that hes not up to that type of game. If he wants to make it he now knows he needs more than just raw talent, he needs to work hard on his strength and fitness and practice set pieces. Maybe hecky will give some of our youth team kids a try going forward....

Now, first off I am not slating a young player, merely making a point relevant to last night's game.
Unfortunately when a player plays like Mcatee did last night its a bigger disadvantage than playing with 10 men. With 10 men the other players reorganise and put in the extra required to make up the deficit, whilst someone constantly giving the ball away, losing tackles, etc, leads to gaps appearing as players commit expecting the ball to be retained.
James Mcatee will be a player but he has to improve dramatically on that performance last night.

Just having this thread at the top of the forum, as it was always likely to be, titled "McAtee hate" is really going to help matters isn't it

It only draws attention to the small minority of nonsense it wouldn't do him any good to see. Counter productive thread

What's it been, a game and half? Let's at least let him get his feet under the table before starting with this crap

As I said, it's Hecky who deserves slagging off over this

Hindsight.

You don't know till you try a player.

Brooks hadn't started many games before Bouncing Day. He could easily have folded under the enormous pressure but he was fantastic that day.

(Turns out Pressure makes Diamonds....)

The other side of the coin is when Wilder started James Wilson ahead of Billy, also against Wendy, because Wilson had been so good in training, and he did fuck all in the match.

Show me a post or a comment from someone who said before the game McAtee was going to have a mare, and even then.

Let's slag off the manager for trying out young players.

Hecky fucked up ,he made the same mistake he did v sunlan.
He dropped berge back to play mcatee

Neither were games mcatee could reasonably be expected to excel in given his inexperience and stature

We also lost berge in his only real effective role surging forward

Hopefully hecky will learn from this and play Doyle instead with either mcatee or berge depending on the opponents but mcatee will be a better player for the experience

I didn't see many pre game comments, but it's what I felt myself, while just hoping I'd be proven wrong. Was probably similar with others on here, and our depleted options to choose from played a part too - it felt like a half forced change, although we still had better options for this game

And if I remember right we were even more depleted at Hillsborough, but Brooks had already shown us what he can do

Hecky had other options, knew better than us what to expect, yet started him anyway

I am surprised he us starting McAtee ahead of Doyle as this negates Berges strengths. Surely Doyle needs a run of games alongside Norwood in the middle?

I still think we are short in midfield and up front but with so many injuries we are just shuffling people about a bit.

McAtee is young and will hopefully play a part but worryingly for me it has been more than the lack of physicality and struggling with pace/strength- his touch and passing has been wretched. He also looks quite slow. I thought he was a nimble, creative dribbler but seem very little to suggest he can carry the ball. Yet.

I actually thought he was poor v Sunderland save 5 mins and awful last night. He is a young lad and is learning but if he wants minutes he needs to do far better than last night or we won't see much of him yet as can't carry players. Last night was like playing with ten men first half.

Or should that be…

Surely he is better playing his first full match backed by a full house at BL than thrown into the cauldron that is Kenilworth Rd where the team like to kick the opposition at every opportunity backed by a passionate crowd that are on top of you.

Based on how it went last night Luton away looked like the wrong choice to me.

All those things are why he’s here. To learn.

My old man used to say to me when I'd a mess of something " a man who has never made a mistake has never made anything". Don't worry son, everything will be fine, it's just called a steep learning curve.

I think hate is a bit OTT..

He just found out what adult football was about last night, and he's probably realising how much more he has to learn..

You trust the BL crowd not to scapegoat an individual player !!?

On the match thread there were about 40 comments between team news and kick off. Precisely 1 of them said we should be starting Doyle instead of McAtee. Yet after the game dozens are going on about what a mistake it was. Fuck armchair generals.
