Wasn't he not signing a new deal at Newcastle due to wages and had offers from abroad smashing what Newcastle were offering?
I'm sure there was a third party abroad interested in buying him on behalf of someone else, like what happened with Hurst Jr so they don't have to pay the compo.

Officially he’s a free agent but I’ve seen the rumours of Udinese offering him £20-30k a week.

But I’d like to think he’s had enough of mad owners for now, and would rather come to a club near his roots, owned by a nice, stable, royal bog-roll tycoon.

He'll have no affiliation towards South Yorkshire.
