Oh if only it worked like that. What I would like to see is us sign quality before releasing players not the other way around.

How do you do that though? If their contract is up, it's up. We surely can't offer out contracts to poor payers because we fear we might fail to do any better afterwards?

Get your new players signed up before the old players contracts expire? Now if that contract expires in May you have a problem, if it's July then less so. All that said if Clough has a plan then I am sure he will already have this one sorted. The guy knows what he is doing I am sure

Matt Hill = Scapegoat. After all, it can't be that people just don't think he's good enough, can it?:p

I actually think he's a reasonable defender, but woefull on the ball. We must do better.

UTB

As part of a squad that has marauded it's way from relegation to just outside the play off places you could argue we couldn't do better, or that as part of that squad Hill is good enough. Personally i would like us to not need him or Porter next season but this is SUFC and it's never quite that black or white is it? Oops look what I did.

Doesn't the law of averages dictate that in 50% of cases, that will be a problem.

I think we can be supremely confident that we can improve on players like Hill, and our forward line (name omitted for your blood pressure's sake :p)

Taking our track record into account I would take nothing for granted. Where you do pull a 50% figure out of the air from in any case? I would suggest IF we have done the right planning we already know who is staying and who is going. I'm pretty sure Clough knows who is off and he appears to have it all under control.

As for Porter (there I said it) I don't care whether he stays of goes because I trust the manager who I feel knows better than anyone (even you and I). My opinion is he could add something but the variables are based not on his wage, but on what we can get in to replace. You appear very confident we can attract better players. I am not sure what this is based on because our track record of getting good players in the transfer window isn't the best.

IF we get better players in then I would release the players like Porter and Hill etc but not before. If that means a one year contract at low wages so be it.

Someone else made a point that our academy lads could do this job and we should get rid of seasoned professional football and fill the team with kids in their place. You may not be a fan of Hill or Porter but trust me there is no one of the golden kids fit to lace their boots at this point. Not in skill alone but what they add in experience, which appears to be an underrated requirement by some.

Theres a big difference between having experience and having quality.Your right ,hill and porter have stacks of experince but as for quality wtf these two have none of it,you are going way over the top saying the kids can't lace their boots.Lets put it this way its partly due to us giving these lads experience that were still in this shite league
As for questioning whether we can get better players in look no further than the january transfer window,he didn't do too bad there did he;)

To show that we mean business next year players like Hill,Porter and the cast offs Millar, Taylor,Brandy,Ironside,Mcfazdene,Whitehouse must be shown the door.
Do you think any of the above would have made the Wolves starting line up this year, not a prayer.
Wolves made key signings especially to their forward line to ensure promotion so must we.
Just one thing about Matt Hill[it is a thread about him] even though he,s limited in ability the guys got a tremendous attitude and will be remembered for it.

Sorry but I haven't seen anything for our youth setup that tells me that there is anything fit to come in and replace Porter or Hill. Most youth product won't go straight into the first team in any case, they will be sent out on loan to get experience. As for Diego (I know he's brilliant) he has come back from a serious injury and has as yet proved nothing. Attitude plays at least as much a part as talent and thats where he may yet be found wanting. I know we want to see local talent coming through the youth into the first team but its not happened as yet. No point putting pressure on a youth setup that cannot deliver is there?

January Transfer window you are right, we did exceptionally well there, but take our wider track record and its been nothing short of woeful. I hope we can replicate Januarys successes without selling our good players. Fingers crossed but back to my base point, until we buy better we shouldn't sell what we have. Otherwise you end up panic buying or not replacing at all.

OK, you get rid of Porter and replace him with who? You get rid of Hill and replace him with who? Herein lies the problem, its a piece of piss just getting players out of the door but unless we are offering lots of money we are not an attractive proposition to your average championship player. Sorry, but theres a lot of shit being spouted about us being "loaded". Now I don't doubt the prince has brought some of his money into play with players like Brayford and Scougall joining us but we are not loaded. Some fans sound like we are a real attractive proposition for someone. Get some perspective please because we are in the third division and on our umpteenth manager in 10 years or so. Sure, its better than it was but we aren't fixed yet. You can't mend the sickness that decended over our club in 5 minutes.

I don't want to shatter illusions but some of the claptrap coming from people you would think we were as big as that lot up the road in S6. Forget Wolves and teams like that, they were still playing with Parachute money. Were aren't in that league. Thats why we sold them KMac. Thats why they had first dibs on just about any player in League One if they wanted it.

Clough is doing things the right way, building solidly and slowly. I think we may well push the play offs next season and if we are lucky go top 2, but its not a given by a long way.

It stands out a mile what our weaknesses are and I'm sure Clough will address them soon.

All the this divisions top five goalscorers are twenty plus men and wouldn't break the bank to lure them here .
I'm not going to slag Porter or Hill on here but they'll not get us out of this division.

In 1978 I would have agreed with you but things have moved on. I would never have thought Shipps would get us out of the Championship but as part of a squad he did. Porter scores 11 off the bench next season and someone else bags 20+ and we will be up there and thats what matters.

What did you mean about 1978?

Got to be my worst period football wise 78-81 of following the Blades

But the aggro was good;)

No, not quite. The chances are that if contacts end in a random nature between now and June as you alluded to earleir, then in 50% of cases, our players contacts will finish AFTER the players we're trying to sign.

So, if we do it your way, there's a 50% probability we'll be extending contacts of Hill and Porter just in case we can't do better.

I know we can.

Matt Hill is a "strange one". If we were talking about signing him from another club I would be mortified. However, I can see reason why we might offer him another year and I'd be OK with that.
If we're playing the "small squad" card next season then we need players who can fulfill more than one role to compliment the matchday 18. I'd rather have quality than quantity but you've got to allow for the inevitable injuries/suspensions to hit all of a sudden. That's why a Ben Davies coming in or a Matt Hill staying wouldn't be a problem in my view.

I've argued with others in previous transfer windows when we've signed "squad players" rather than immediate starters as I don't see the point in going after players who are no better than we already have, but if we have an obvious first choice 11 and no great numbers as back upthen we need two or three "multi taskers" to fill in as needed. I think Hill is acceptable as one of those.

I've always appreciated the fact that when he comes onto the pitch, he locks on to a kid in the crowd and sticks his thumb up.

And I've just read that back

Certainly got that impression during our cup run Kev.

I don't think he's a pig, looking at the style of his posting I think he one of either two three super Wums who got kicked off Bladesmad last year...

I am thinking Redford.

His possible last touch as a Sheffield United player was a sliced pass into John Street.

Heh, that was wonderful :D

He kept a clean sheet a least. Good luck Matt!

Agree with you in a way, yes he's never really let us down at CB but let's be honest he's dog shit an I for one will be glad to see the back of him. Any player who cannot pass the ball shouldn't be playing the game! The last bit of your post doesn't even warrent a reply...
This applies to 85 per cent of the current"squad."
