In an ideal world if money weren't an issue I would get rid of everybody else but those 5 and sign more quality. Obviously i'm aware it's not economically possible which is a shame.:(
Any body would think Clough was a duff manager(he was, not)most of his signings will be useful next season as atkins will soon find out.Clough,s
big mistake was not strengthening the spine of the team.atkins will soon put that right and with one or two adjustments and a more positive approach there's no reason why we can't go for it this season'
ime still baffled by Clough,s inability to strengthen the spine as the support from the board was there in my opinion that weakness cost Clough his job as we would have had a far better chance of going up automatic

Shit - we changed managers already?
That didn't last long, did it?
Wow!

Journalists often refer to this time of year as a quiet period news-wise, so rumours abound (see S5's post above).
While I'm at it, all this bolox about a new pitch is just to disguise the fact that fracking's about to begin any time soon on our pitch. McCabe and the Prince have given permission to one of these fracking pirates to drill deep, at least until a couple of days before the season begins......there, that should keep anyone on here who is a rumour junkie busy...shouldn't it?

James McClean is going to West Brom for £1.5 million so this doesn't bode well for us regarding Matty Done, that's if they see him as a direct replacement or another position. They'll propably bid this fee and won't be far off getting him for that money as we'll have doubled our money but will lose one of our most influential players.

If we do it'll be a sure sign that we are not interested in getting out of this league.

I would imagine that Adkins will stress to everyone the crucial imperative of achieving promotion this season. Certain players in our squad will always have an eye on whether a move is the right thing for them, so I hope NA emphasises that their own fate is within their grasp and that if they want to play in a higher division they can achieve it at this club under his management. That should keep 'em quiet for at least one season.

Every player has a price and Done is no different he is not the bee,s knee,s. and ime sure we would find a worthy replacement. Atkins has just arrived he wants promotion as much as us let's leave the team building to him there is plenty of time to ccriticise. Him if it goes pear shaped

Disagree....as far as we're concerned Done ticks lots of boxes. The key is to find the player who'll become his partner up front. This season isn't one where we consider selling our best players, and Done falls into that category without a shadow of a doubt.

I did,nt. say sell him but every player has a price on his head including messie !!

Finlay, you did everything but suggest selling him...to suggest we could find a comparable replacement lends weight to the fact that you consider it a good idea. What then happens to Done's replacement when he turns out to be half decent? We sell him too? And so on, and so on, and we never do anything than get lucky, buy on the cheap and sell for....well that's another discussion.

At this moment we have a good player in Done. If you can suggest a player who's currently available and worth buying then I'm all yours...but for now Done may contribute towards a crack at getting promoted next season, and to do that a settled team and squad is what we'll need.

I agree with you itsinyerblood but as I stated earlier every player has a price that's football.I think it's all far fetched rumour anyway

Frack away as far as I'm concerned. We can't keep letting those mule-dung shovellers hold the rest of the world to ransom.

And (if reports are to be believed) they will be replacing McClean with Sam Clucas of Chesterfield. Backward-facing news for Wigan. Excellent news for Maguire.

If Wigan's valuation of Done is significantly higher than ours, say £1.5 million, its not necessarily a bad deal.

He's good player in this league and one of my favourites in the current side, but I suspect that a fee around that level and the wages released could fund an equally good, 6 foot plus, replacement and a competent centre half.

It also depletes Wigan's budget more than necessary and leaves them less room for manoeuvre in January.

If Adkins is any good he'll adopt an unsentimental and professional approach that leaves our team with a better chance of promotion.

sigh, more 4-4-2 rubbish

I know what you mean, but footballers are simple folk and tactical nuances aren't always their forte. The benefit of 4-4-2 is every player only needs to know he's playing for his partner in every position on the pitch. Last season we saw we had wingers who couldn't support the strikers enough in a 4-5-1, and midfielders who had the same difficulty.

In an ideal world you keep footballers' heads as empty as possible. :)

sigh, more 4-4-2 rubbish

Not necessarily, having a preferred partner doesn't imply a specific system, rather the fact that players can move from one position to another - as the dutch have been known to do - and be effective. I'd suggest that sighing over an as yet untried system, whatever it might be, should be replaced by a little patience, let's see what NA has in mind, and then, what I hope is an effective first 11 players picked to do a job they're equipped to do.

all players have a price , if they offer silly money we can probably do well out of it
no one is irreplaceable in our squad, if we get plenty of moolah for them .

Surely this would be a backward step for Done though, Wigan have a good chance of getting up this year but if they do what about the season after. This season must be the last season of parachute payments and nobody is chucking money at them anymore. We would be a far better prospect of long term Champoionship security if we get promotion. I suppose it comes down to the wages that are offered.

We see it like that , but do the rest of football.

Surprisingly little amount of love for done on this thread if I'm honest.

Take his 7 in 12 games over and we've got a 25 plus goal player who wasn't even on penalty duty. No guarantees we'd be able to replace those goals. Plus he must be on a fairly long term contact having just signed, we should be looking for a couple of mil minimum to sell.

For me we should be focused on finding someone to play with him.

He's the most exciting of players. Would. be stupid to let him go. Teams haven't got a clue how to defend against him.

Still cannot see this happening and I really hope it doesn't. He has quickly become one of our better players and will be really important for us next season. I think he could play up front or in a deeper role. Very handy player to have.

Spot on dingledog and Bladeinleeds. Some of the comments I've read on this post are stupendously ignorant of what we have in Done. He's unlike any player I've seen in Baldes' shirt, unpredictable in a good way, and if he can strike up an understanding with the rest of the team he'll be one of those players who'll we'll be thankful we kept. He's just the sort of player who can stay a yard behind a defender, see the space and make his run when a pass has been released, and he'll still beat offside, a glorious weapon to have in our armoury! All this talk of getting money for Done and finding someone as good, if not better (some hope!) is pointless if we are serious about wanting to progress. Once Adkins see's what Done can produce he'll know his xmas's have all come at once, and if we can find someone to complement Done's talents we'll have, for the first time since Evans played, a forward line that'll fear no team in this division.

I think the latter is a given .... proven time and time again over the years. Apparently, in order to pass the test and qualify to be a United board member, you have to have:

a) No common sense
b) No bloody idea about footballing matters
c) An inability to recognise a decent footballer
d) Not a clue about how much a footballer is worth
e) Be gullible in the extreme
f) Disastrous, bordering on appalling communication skills
g) Inability to recognise a crap deal when one hits you in the face
h) The negotiating skills of a 12 month old toddler
I) Complete and utter lack of awareness of most of what is going on around you
k) Not one shred of a backbone
l) A knitted bobble hat with the immortal words " I'm a soft touch" knitted into the pattern
m) No ambition
n) An irrational fear of the top two Divisions
o) A bottle carrier with no bottles in it
and finally ......
p) The inability to appreciate and recognise the pain, heartache and crap that the long-suffering supporters of this great Club ( notice I didn't say massive ) have had to endure over the last 40 years but yet still faithfully turn
up and support their team even though they KNOW in their hearts that it will probably end in tears again !!! o_O

UTB & FTP

Q) And also a highly successful businessman capable of having sufficient capital (would expect close to a £1m) to put into the club with no return guaranteed.

If we sell Done my confidence in the owners and management will plummet. If I had to name one player to keep hold of it would be him, ahead of Murphy or even Brayford.

Plenty of love from S18.

Losing Done would be a HUGE blow. Difficult in the extreme to adequately replace.
