No, we needed to sign a winger anyway. I believe he's only our 4th winger and for me Flynn and JCR aren't working very well and I'm basing my opinion of what I saw last year. JCR even though his pace was useful when he got into those dangerous areas 7/10 times he would do the wrong ball and float it in for 5ft players to challenge over a 6ft CB and he did the same with the corners, I don't this could be because of what cliugh told him to do.

And then you have Flynn who has is moments of brilliance and was superb in filling that right back position but he tends to give the ball away a lot.

And Murphy seems to be going so I think it's a signing that needed to be made but he does need to continue signing player and definitely a CB

Eh? Murphy doesn't seem to be going anywhere. If it's to Leeds you mean, they've turned their attentions elsewhere.

First time poster......

I was at a club as a YTS when nigel was manager, great appointment, best manager I have seen up close. I think we will go places under him.

Woolford is a good signing regardless of weather we need a centre back or not, why would anyone moan about getting a proven player in any position? Its not logical for a club not to sign a player just because he does not play in the most required position!

Never said there was, and I believe ALL managers have a penchant for it.

Just made me smile as it seemed to be the biggest, of some very big sticks, that some people wanted to beat our previous manager with.

I think it was more of an issue of signing your old players that weren't improving the quality of the team

Bit more physical presence and Championship experience...free agent...worth the contract IMO...especially if Murphy decides to bolt...

UTB!

I wonder if, rather than the sale of Murphy, this might suggest a shift in formation for us next season. Adkins highlights he can cover a number of roles other than left-wing - could also suggest Murphy plays fewer games as an out-and-out winger next season.

Well done iiyb, you've spooked maxster, he was onto something with Woolford and you've distracted him to the point he's lost all impetus on what would have been his first ITK :)

It was meant to be a gentle nudge Trig. I think Max has his heart in the right place and is eager to gain whatever spurs he considers will give him forum credibility, all nonsense of course.

Good luck to the lad, so far he's stood his ground, taken a little bit of stick (nothing hateful from what I can see), and will be all the better for it. Usually I tend to rely on Foxy for any confirmed transfer news, otherwise supporting the Blades is just one of many things that tend to occupy my life.

true. At least this one looks like he's fit and not injured, played 38 times last season.

Sorry - we're slacking with work being so busy.

Just seen that Wigan have signed Will Grigg. Makes this signing seem all the more underwhelming. However still reserving judgement until we see the squad on the 8th of August.

Good signing. Can play in a few positions, scores a few goals and can cross. Good cover for Murphy (and we needed someone to help him out as he was shattered by the end of the season), reliable, hard working, consistent and I believe he can take corners. Also 6ft.

What the man said ^^^ VVV

"We are very aware of the talents Martyn brings to Bramall Lane. He can play in several attacking positions, is fit, strong, robust, honest, hard-working and has a fantastic professional attitude. He has been consistently available for selection over many seasons and knows the demands required of this level."

As others have said I wasn't particularly overjoyed with this signing. However:

He's 6ft so will add height to a squad that severely lacks it.

He's fit (played loads) when we have so many players that go limp at the sight of a football.

Can play in a range of positions so will provide good competition.

Just to add as others have: this is a good signing as an addition and not a replacement.

I remember a lot of Blades being "underwhelmed" with the Basham signing too but that's turned out to be a top bit of business. Bringing players in that have consistently been picked to play in the league we're aspiring to get into isn't a bad thing if you ask me.

Having said that, I have barely seen him play so will also reserve judgement. In new Nigel we trust...

Why because we have signed a winger and they have signed a striker?
