I recall when we signed Beard and in The Star it said "Blades sign Beardo" and for a moment I thought we'd actually signed Peter Beardsley.

Wasn't the fee something like £117,500 Bergen Blade ?

That was indeed the fee.

We signed 2 players in the summer of 1995 for a fee - Paul Holland came from Mansfield for 250 grand.

It may not be well remembered now but at the time Beard had something of a “name” in the football World as he had scored at Highbury in 1995 when Millwall knocked Arsenal out of the Cup, and had played when they beat Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in the next round too.

Holland was regarded as a prospect - he had played 4 times for England under 21s in 1995 despite Mansfield being in League 2, and scored 9 goals from Midfield. It was, I think, thought to be a good signing.

It turned out that Beard was average at best and Holland wasn’t good enough for the 2nd tier. Holland went to Chesterfield before the season was out. Beard hung around till the end of 1997-8 but after Bassett went only really played when we had injuries (a big problem in those 2 seasons). His last game was as a sub at Coventry in the Cup quarter final, so he finished on a high.

Terrible news. It’s no age these days either.

With the game, quite rightly being postponed in my view, it did make me wonder if United were ever given that option before we played Newcastle.

Some things are more important than football. RIP.
