And btw in 1978 we had almost signed him for 150k, but the military junta at the time said they want the same amount of money, our board we nervous about giving out bribes so the deal collapsed. The Blades had already signed Sabella and Pedro Verde, and also tried with Ossie and Villa, but as they say...…………….Did you know that Pedro's nephew Sabastian Veron grew up supporting the Blades?

Indeed, Maradona confirmed the fact in 2011 when he said he thought he was coming …..tickets booked to England.... everything??? UTB (FTP)

IMHO yes, we are lucky to have Ronaldo and Messi at the moment but Maradona did it without the protection from refs that players get these days. The pitches weren't as good either.
Point taken.

Im in the Messi camp fwiw.

I'm obviously a big fan of Lionel as well pal, genius.
The fact that Maradona did it at The World Cup finals makes him better.

Its almost impossible to judge ”best’ because you have to define it. Also different eras are difficult to compare.
Dont think any of the players pre 2000 had the strength and fitness of today’s players.

The current fashion regards football is short passing playing as a team.
When I was a kid in the late 70’s the romanticism about football was based on dribbling.

Best allround (passing, individual, consistency, mental) player probably Pele in the old era, Messi in recent decades
Best dribblers who could score from nothing Maradona and George Best
Most outrageous skills Ronaldinho and Maradona
Best mental toughness to overcome (cometh the hour cometh the man moment) Cristiano Ronaldo

When Messi plays for Argentina in the World Cup opposition defenders are respectful and know he needs watching closely
Whereas when Maradona played for Argentina opposition defenders were scared.....Messi doesn’t command that individual fear factor.

Watch any Maradona doc you want, look at the unbridled passion and joy he inspired in his followers. He understood instinctively what the Peoples' game meant to The People, then consider the anodyne insta-friendly product placement personality voids of today.

We may never see his like again. RIP Diego.

I agree that now the players are more athletic and in most cases stronger, but Maradona was very strong, he had to be.
Loved watching Ronaldinho, on natural talent alone he was up with the very best.
The original Ronaldo would be up there too if not for injuries.

We signed Sabella after we dropped plans to sign Maradona. Verde came to us a year later

The first player I remember being truly in awe of as a young boy. A couple of players have come close, but nobody has ever made me watch the game with that same wide eyed wonder again.

Failing to appreciate the golden boy is failing to appreciate football as far as I'm concerned.

RIP Diego

Messi is the magician in the last third of the pitch, Maradona was the magician in two thirds of the pitch so Maradona was the best.

“Messi doesn’t command that individual fear factor:”

Bit ironic that we were among the early adopters for looking at overseas players following the rule changes in 1978, given our homegrown stance at the moment.

"There is a fine line between genius and insanity." - I think Maradona is a classic example of this statement.

I can't remember all of the details but wasn't he involved in a shoot out with the police? Arrested for possession of drugs and reputably had links with the Mafia when at Naples.

Without doubt one of the best footballers in the history of the game.

No role model for me, dirty cheater with that handball. Terry Butcher was useless for that second wonder goal against England in 1986.

Fantastic player, a proper genius never mind the England Argentina thing. If England could have ever produced a player with 50% of the talent of Maradona then it would have been the best English player in the last 50 years

RIP

So he has a heart attack at 60, has a history of drug use and was about to be treated for alcohol dependency.

Are we sure he didn’t play or at the very least support us with that pedigree???

Typical of United at the time. We were in the old third division at the time, had already signed Sabella and then signed Verde and Len De Goey, however league rules on foreign players at the time meant that only two of them could play. Verde has normally the unlucky one.

I've been to Argentina twice. Fantastic, Buenos Aires is wonderful, as is the country generally. There is a verve for living your life like every day may be your last, and Diego personified that. RIP.

Could have so nearly been a blade Diego! RIP one of the greatest!!😪😪
