I understand you're comparing Dowell to Duffy because he came on for him, but Dowell broke through the center a couple of times and threaded a few nice balls through.
I'm not sure it has to be one or the other you know, I reckon we could accommodate both if they carry on playing well and Fleck and Ollie don't.

Please post on Fleck thread

I will hold my opinion , previous form & reputation tells me he’s shit.......but let’s see...Wilder seems to like him so when Wilders moaning about budget and his personal salary, let’s remember he was the one to bring him in....

He did exactly as was required of him last night when he came on. Won some flicks that went to Blades players, showed some good touches. He will need a few more minutes to get up to speed but having had the ball coming straight back at us pretty much all 2nd half he did his job and held the ball up and brought others into play. I didn't like the fact that we reverted to pretty much all out long ball, that's something that needs to be tempered with some training but a hybrid between hoof and the normal tactics would be welcome at times when we're chasing games.

Because the role of target man is a specialist position - much like being a defender is a specialist position, you can throw Egan up there to ‘win a few headers’ but that is last resort. Madine is a target man, which means not just winning headers, it means linking up the play from midfield to attack, it means taking up good attacking positions, it means being able to bully a defender and be a good finisher - Egan is a brilliant defender but could not do this.

He did, several times actually, and broke through the middle, only to over hit the pass out of play, he played a few other nice passes albeit fairly straightforward ones and was generally looking to move play forward.

My overall opinion is that both Madine and Dowell are good additions.
That quote was me giving in, I thought Dowell had a good cameo, I just had people trying to convince me he didn't.

Oh piss off he was actually our best player

Is the role of a target man not to score headed goals too?? Do you know how many headed goals Madine scored in 41 championship appearances last season ...
.. just the 1 and that's playing for two teams that play to his strengths!!! He managed 6 goals from open play from 41 games last season....

Did he score or even have a shot? That's kind of a requirement of a striker

Can't let this thread pass without saying happy anniversary to Gary Madine - it's a year ago today since he last scored a goal. Drawn a blank in 20 games since.

He did well winning a few balls in the air. 35 yards from goal. From which we created nothing. Oh well. Early days. No other help is coming so we'll have to hope he suddenly starts contributing.

Depends what he's been brought on to do really. None of our strikers scored yesterday. Is every game that a striker doesn't score a failure?

In the 20 minute period he was on the pitch he did the job that I'm guessing was asked of him, to hold the ball up and be a bit more physical. He had zero chances to score whereas the other strikers had 1 each in the time that they were on the pitch, is that his fault or the fault of the players who should create the chances?

If you don't like him fair enough but he did more in 20 minutes yesterday than the other strikers managed in the game in terms of overall play.

So you propose bunging a defender up as a target man in these circumstances??? Seeing as though they both go up anyway for corners and free kicks and they rarely score or create knockdowns I’d go with no.

If you want a target man, you play a bloody target man.
He already is a target man after his comments

They have bigger penalty areas in Wales?

He was 1 of only 4 positives for me today.
Dowell
Deano
O'Connell
And Madine

Couldnt bring myself to watch the match live as I'm a complete bag of nerves watching us on tv and wiped the recording off straight after the result but if the two new signings played well then that augurs well for the rest of the season. Just hope no one comes in for Jack O'C

Are you me?????

Why am I so much worse watching on tv than at a game I just don’t get it

Strange isn't it ? I just can't do it, neither listen on the radio. I'm not bad when I'm at matches, although anything other than a 4-0 advantage with 5 minutes left has me shaking in my boots. I'm getting worse as I get older

A physical presence which gives defenders more to think about which none of our current 3 do,

He’ll draw defenders to him opening up space for others.

He’ll be better on crosses and corners than the current 3

He's scored 1 headed goal in the last two seasons.... thats less than:

Sharpe
McGoldrick
Clarke
Basham
JOC
Egan

I'm the same. I think it’s because when you’re at the match, win or lose you’ve had a day out and supported your team.

You're also among fellow Blades. People feeling exactly the same. The day out is neither here nor there, i'm still always gutted after a defeat and irrationally high after a win. Fkin Blades...shouldn't do this to me

Same here. Mrs. Grappler loves the Blades and loves football in general, and can stay quite calm after a loss, just move on to the next game. I am terrible, continually dwelling on the loss, as we walk back to the car, punctuated with a few "Bloody United!, totally ruined my weekend!" and other such childish outbursts.
