And you were doing so well with your first post, but have to go an RUIN it with the black socks. ;)

White socks is iconic United to me let Sunderland and Brentford have their black or red, United's image to me is flashing white socks, and that's even growing up in the 80s and 90s when we never had em.

Just makes the whole kit more unique for me, the flashing white socks as the players run.

Who is that tall bloke with the amazing hairstyle, third from the left in the back row. I bet he was an amazing player....

He would have gone on to play at the highest level for club and country if it wasn't for him being so crap. Tragic. :(

Who's the giant third from the left at the back?

Edit: just seen there is a private joke about him - but really, who is he?

It's Steve Faulkner.

The joke stems back to a thread about United's worst ever player. Faulkner was mentioned by many and this prompted his daughter to sign up to defend her dad's honour n a rather aggressive (and illiterate) manner. Her chief argument was that SF was a much better player than anyone on here. Responses along the lines of "yes that's true, but we are comparing him to other pros, not average people" failed to stop the tide of belligerance, so people just started taking the piss out of her....

I'm in the black sock camp. Again, One wouldn't visit one's club in white sox. (One wouldn't be allowed in) so why at One's football club?
Agreed about adidas stripes, the worst design crime of all 'sockwise' has to be VERTICAL stripes. they are just mental. I'm quite surprised no team has come out with two socks of different colours, say right leg in red, left leg in black? Is this a marketing ploy they have missed???

Vorpal, the odd sock situation has not been missed previously, I think they just realised it's really shit...here's Racing Santander's version from 2009/2010 season...I really hope SUFC never do this...

'Thanks' sportinguista.

That has got to be the most ridiculous football kit I've ever seen in my life. Even the poor girl modelling it looks like she has a sick taste in her mouth. Truly schizophrenic, on a practical level, it cannot have been easy to recognise your team-mates in that piebald idiocy.

I'm assuming therefore that Racing got relegated that season. Had I been involved I'd have simply docked them ten points before the season started. Quite, quite unconscionable, have they never read the EU charter on human rights?

That's actually rather brilliant. Have half your team play in green/black and the other in black/green and the opposition won't know if you're coming or going.

Sort of defeats the objective doesn't it? Back in the days they weren't 'home' 'away' 'third'. You had your colours (red and white stripes, black shorts in our case) and then you had a 'change' of colours when there was a clash. That's the key phrase, you are changing because of a clash of colours, so logically your change kit has to be different to your colours, in our case something other than red, white or black. Simple really!

But of course it's not about any of that anymore, it's simply about fleecing supporters for as much as possible!

I would like us to use the HOME shirt at HOME. The AWAY shirt AWAY. And if the away shirt clashes with the Home team's home shirt, use our HOME shirt.

Or,

Use the 3rd if we insist on having a 3rd shirt.

Then...

The 3rd shirt should be promoted to the AWAY shirt the following season.

That way, they would wear the shirts more. Last season, I think they only wore the white shirt twice. Bournemouth for definate as they play in Black & Red.

A spanish team did this a couple of seasons ago. Wore like a blackburn shirt but Black and green.

See !!

Yes I remember that! So that's the fella is it? Was he on the cumbersome side perchance?

United kits from yesteryear.

Note the black socks for the first eighty years, and as I've said before, our away kit needs to be either white, or black, or a colour so retina-searing in it's brightness that sunglasses will be needed to look at one.

This "third kit" nonsense is just a way to fleece fans even more. If a club's change strip in no way matches their home shirt, or that of any other club in their league, then a third kit becomes redundant.

The classiest away shirt in my humble opinion was the plain white "Wards" shirt. I left my first in a bar in Portugal some years ago, and missed it so much I bought another one in near mint condition off Ebay for a fiver. A shirt that's kicking on for sixteen years old, been worn lots, washed lots too, or rather laundered lots, and it's still in great condition. Take note Macron.....

Aren't the early years wrong on that image SV? Thought it was white with a pinstripe and blue shorts back in the beginning.

Yes, it's not that great a picture, I just lifted it from t'interweb earlier. At least it shows, ish, that we had black socks for a long time. We should go back to red pinstripes on white for the shirts.........

Through our whole history black socks, white socks in that order.

In my lifetime (mid 60s on) white socks, black socks. Sort of explains why there seems to be a preference for white socks, especially in the 40-60 age bracket. From 1964-1981 we constantly wore white socks bar one season when we had red. Black never featured until 1987!

What about something along the lines of this absolute stunner?

Was it ever even worn in a match?

Love that 93-95 away shirt. Infact I might see if I can get one off eBay.
It's funny that this shirt was frowned on if not even despised at the time, yet we look back 15/20 years and fall in love with the old retro stuff...

I've managed to pick up a few beauties on eBay of late, so it's always worth checking every week or so to see what turns up...got the one below the other week...
