Lundstram sideways and backwards sideways and backwards sideways and backwards sideways and backwards sideways and backwards sidsideways and backwards eways and backwards

What does rubbish mean?
You can say any player is rubbish because it doesn’t mean anything.
I’ve seen Messi live in the Nou Camp a few years ago and I thought he was rubbish too, lazy and couldn’t tackle to save his life, couldn’t defend or head a ball either.
So does that mean Lundstram is the same standard as Messi?

No it means Messi is the same standard as Lundstram!

James Milner would still beat Lunny in a 100M race, even if you gave Lunny a 50m head start!

Decent squad player imo nothing more.

He’s struggled at times with the pace of the championship, I can only see that lack of pace exposing him further at the next level up.

What he has shown however, is more of a knack for scoring goals from midfield than our other players combined but imo you can’t teach the speed to excel at the next level.

I think if he’s required to start 10+ games we will struggle.

I seem to remember a spell of games where Lundstram would get brought on late in the game and we'd concede moments later.

To be fair to him he always seemed to play quite well in those games and never made any mistakes (that I can remember) leading directly to a goal, but I'll still mention tongue in cheek that 'we'll probably concede now' any time he gets subbed on.

Unlucky coincedence rather than him actually being a bad player for me.

If you’re hanging on, and it don’t look good,
Who you gonna call?
JOHN LUNDSTRAM!

When you’re 1-0 up, as the clock runs down,
Who you gonna call?
JOHN LUNDSTRAM!

When you need a man, to get hold of the ball,
Who you gonna call?
JOHN LUNDSTRAM!

I ain’t afraid of no Grealish

Favourite bit about this is that barely any of his team mates called for a foul and the referee didnt even consider blowing his whistle for a millisecond cus he knew the tackle was so clean

How come this superstar "lunny" couldn't get near the 11 last season but now deemed good enough for the PL? Crazy.

Settled team and no major injuries or suspensions in midfield.

I'd hazard a guess and say he was one of our most used substitutes though.

And as for why now, players develop, he's had a seasons worth of Championship appearances over the past 2 seasons, for a team that was always in and around the top 6 and he's using that experience and the training he's had to get himself in contention. He's been very good in the semi clean slate situation which is preseason and while we all like a more attacking lineup, would have earned his spot if he's in the 11 at Bournemouth.

I haven't seen it mentioned anywhere yet - I just watched the interview with Lundstram on the Sheffield United youtube channel. Seems like a nice guy! (not that that warrants a spot in the starting 11). I'm no expert, but I agree that Barnsley's pressing game was effective too, particularly in the first half - appeared that our midfield didn't cope with it well at all to me!

UTB

He will be destroyed in the PL if he comes up against a pressing midfield. He hasn't got quick feet and he can't turn fast enough to get away from his opponent so he will lose the ball or panic and misplace his pass. I've said it since he arrived, he should have one role, and that is as a player protecting the defence in a midfield 4.

You said that “he’s good at giving the ball back to the opposition”. His pass completion rate last season was 82%, same as Norwood. It was only slightly lower than Coutts, at 86% but it was better than Fleck’s, at 79%. Sometimes people see exactly what they want to see.

I would have been 100% if all I had to do was pass it back or sideways over three yards.

We will see what occurs. I look forward to the studio analysis by MOD pundits and presenter as they tell the nation he is the next Steven Gerrard.

Remember folk saying that about a certain Harry Maguire when he was here. £80m whaaaat?

If Wilder turns Lundstrum into a premier league player this season then he really is the messiah. He actually looked the part against Barnsley and Betis, tried a little too hard against Chesterfield.

The Lundstram project will be over for another season when he starts and we lose our first 2 games. Like last year.
Freeman behind the front 2 from the off please Chris.

If that midfield can’t cut through Barnsley’s press they’re really fucked when City come to town.

Lunny will play his part, especially if we don’t sign another midfielder, but it’ll only be when we’re trying to stifle the opposition away from home. He just isn’t good enough.

I didn't realize he was a Scouser until I saw that yesterday.
I always thought he had potential so hopefully he can become this season's Basham!

Lundstram's appearances this season so far have been in a training match in Portugal and a couple of friendlies against a team just out of L1 and another who wished they were in it. His other appearances in a Blades shirt have usually coincided (contributed?) to a downturn in form. I'm not sure how all of this all adds up to Premiership credentials.

So its a no from me. Please fucking no.

Yes. People who feel the same as me! If he starts in the middle against Bournemouth it will be a disaster! Hes a modern athletic midfielder according to Wilder last night. WTF ! Please please please , if you do play. Prove me wrong

I’d prefer to stay up. The ‘come back stronger’ theory doesn’t work very often...

I couldn’t agree more. But a possibly unintended consequence of the squad that has been superbly put together to stay up is that if the worst happens (and I don’t think it will) I can’t see too many departures and it would easily be the best squad in the Championship.

Giving this thread a timely bump as Lunny was fucking immense yesterday. All over the pitch. Some nice passes. Some really critical interceptions.
Agreed
If I’m being overly critical he was starting to be a bit wasteful in the second half with the ball, but he got his head back in the game and back to usual. Something he wouldn’t have been able to do mentally last year which shows a marked improvement on one of my biggest criticisms of him.

He was fantastic. The support he gave to Baldock and Basham cannot be over estimated.

Nice to see the improvement on prediction...

Always liked the lad. Good player, always wanted the ball, going back to his early games.

Has the honour of scoring our first Premier League goal at home, under the CW/AK management era (our first ever goal, of course, went to the one and only Billy Sharp, and quite right too).

He can also put a decent pass out, we've seen that. Nah den, if part of the plan is to supply Mooooose with these now and again.

Nice to see the improvement on prediction...
Happy to hold my hands up and say I’m wrong. The improvement he’s shown and the role Wilder and Knill have created for him are both to be admired.

I don’t think anyone can say ‘I told you so’ or be a smart arse when it comes to Lunny. No one saw this coming.

All credit to you for doing so.
I certainly have no 'told you so' credentials.
I hope other people give him a fair chance and the credit for what he does here and now, and drop any old prejudices.
He should be living the dream of playing in the premier and getting the praise when it's due.

Im not gonna claim anything other than I said he was under rated by a lot and was a better player than people made out. I said with a run he would keep himself heavily involved... His stats and involvement have been a touch higher than expected though, so I'm not going the claim a prediction :)

He played well, i wouldn't say he was 'immense'. As much as he has done well so far this season some are going over the top about his performances. He has done very well, but let's calm down a little.

He has always been a good player, he got undeserved stick because he wasn't Paul Coutts.

First half was one of the most susceptible to giving the ball away or being too scared to take a Chelsea player on (which tbf all our players except Enda were) but second half displayed great ability and character to come back into the game. I just think the only barrier for him now is the confidence to play off the first or second touch as he is alot better working off his instinct rather than holding onto the ball for too long.
