Long's new deal 'almost wrapped up'

He was happy to sign a month ago, the Premiership interest might have turned his head.

Wilder is an admirer of Grimsby Towns out of contract stopper James McKeown, just saying like...

Contradiction?

What he was trying to say is that any player under the age of 24 who is offered a new contract upon his current deal expiring would command compensation via a tribunal.

If however we didn't offer a contract to Long he would be no different to McFadzean or Kennedy and would be able to sign with any club without them having to pay us a fee.

The club should not allow itself to be held to ransom by Long and he should be grateful we are offering him a new contract. Whilst he improved after a really poor period he still needs to improve his command of the area and long range shot stopping.
Just what Wilder said in his interview
no player will hold us to ransome.

I'm guessing he has got his agent in his ear with all the West Brom malarky. I'm trusting CW will know whether Long is worth his demands or not, or whether Long and / or his agent will have some wriggle room with those demands. If it ends up that Long is happy to go and sit in West Brom's reserves and maybe play against Morecambe in the Capital One Cup then let him go, we move on.

Wilder will be rapidly losing patience as he's said he only wants players here for the right reasons...ie they want the shirt and not just the money.

However the fact he's come through our academy will help his case as we r actively looking to have ex academy players as a bigger percentage of the team and Long going won't help hit that 'quota target'

I would like to see if Long's confidence and command of area improves with a solid back 4. If he does improve he will go from an average L1 keeper to someone who could potentially get all the way to the top.

However, if he's messing us about then I'd take the compo (assuming he does have suitors)

Do you think the fact that Long being on holiday could be holding things up?............

Wilder said he is due to meet him in the next few days when he returns from holiday so I really don't see the issue.

Wilder really is a straight talker. He gave us all the clues needed in the 'when Long returns from holiday' bit.

As far as I see the only 'ultimatum' is in James Shields vivid imagination. :)

Chali , I thought you were going to say you would like to see if Longs confidence and command of the area improves with a salary increase in his new contract .:D

A solid back four would also certainly help proceedings.:D

To be honest I wouldn't be bothered if long does go he is a decent shot stopper but can't command his area. He is also rather weak when it comes to long distant shots and it seem to take him by suprise.for me he also seems to flap at to many shots and crosses and yes he keeps them out of the back of the net but flaps it right back into the danger area surely it is just a matter of time till some one picks up the second ball and bangs it in the back of the net while long is still on the floor or trying to get back in position. I think he is a average league one keeper and in my opinion we could do better, let him go.

If he is trying to hold out in the hope we are going to offer him a better contract get shut. If he doesn't want to be here then we don't need him any way. I am sure we could pick a decent keeper up for probably a very minimal fee is not on a free transfer.

We have the likes of arran ramsdale coming through the academy any way and I am sure he could be a decent enough keeper for the bench as a back up for a new keeper. Chris wilder has said he isn't going to let anyone take the club to randsom and I assume he will be no different when it comes down to George long.

I would be looking to sign a new keeper and would possibly keep Long as No.2
He doesn't command his area and has made mistakes, and if a decent bid came in I would let him go.

Yes, but can he score from a penalty at Wembley?

Keepers make mistakes even Premier League Long is sound at this level and hes improving he come on leaps and bounds last season.
If i was him though keep your head down and prove all the doubters wrong then you have bargaining power.
Not good being a reserve keeper.

Totally agree. Long is an OK keeper at league 1 level, probably average league 1 standard but if we want promotion then we should be aiming for a better keeper.

The main thing in Longs favour is that he's only young so is liable to improve.
His weakness (like Steve Simmonsen) is commending his area, so he's reliant on commanding central defenders doing the shouting and organising for him. Last season we didn't have those commanding central defenders and this left Longs weaknesses exposed.

Also it seemed far from coincedance that last season so many teams scored spectacular long range shots against us.

I agree with you that long is only young and still has time to improve but he has been out on loan and had his fair share of first team matches now so how long can we hold on to long in the hopes he improves? I think we could do better to be honest and I don't think he should or will hold the club at randsom. And as mentioned in my previous post we have a young arran ramsdale coming up through the academy and has already been seen by England squad so surely the Lad must have some potential just don't know if he is ready for first team yet but surely he will be looking to at least make it to the bench or go out on loan so he can grow and hopefully he will develop into a good keeper. I don't know if it is about time we give up on long not sure as I can't make my mind up on him some games he is brilliant but other games he doesn't command his area and flaps at far to many shots and crosses. I'm still to decide on his fate but definitely don't think he is good enough to be holding the club to randsom but we will see what happens.

Long is not going to be on chicken feed if he stays so he's number 1. Some of you lot sound like my wife burning the food budget if you're having him as a reserve. So did anyone mention budget...

I think i am probably up there in the Long fan club, as there isn't many but I don't think he will suit Wilder's 'quick' style of play. He's not the quickest when it's comes to distribution and I wonder if our contract offer was only really get compensation.

And why would he sign to sit on our bench when he could sign to sit on West Brom's for about four times what we'll pay him?

It's hard to distribute the ball quickly when you've got nine cowards in front of you and you don't want to hoof it at Billy.

Didn't seem to be a problem at the Colchester away game last season.

I think that was down to Adkins `playing through the thirds` philosophy, don`t kick it long Long unless you have to.

Wont be a problem under Wilder ;)

Are we being "held to ransom"?

Perhaps his agent is trying to negotiate the best deal for his client, that's what I'd expect if he were representing me. If he went all Uriah Heep (the Dickens character not the rock band) when given our first offer he'd be in business about 5 minutes.

Don't rate him

True, to a point.

Yaya Toure's agent, Dimitri Seluk would argue that he was only trying to get the best deal for his client during the birthday cake saga or the countless times he's slagged the club off: doesn't make him any less of a twat.

Well it proves, for a change, the stir was talking utter shite.

Wilder has just said he's going to sit down with him today.

Nearly a week prior to that; "Almost wrapped up".

Fuck off.
