Long needs to go

Personally I don't think he's good enough and it's a mistake on Wilders part if he thinks Longs the man for us this season and with nobody to push him. He really should have done better for the goal. He fluffed a cross as well yet also made a very good block straight after the goal. However the ironic cheers when he collected the ball were totally uncalled for. They say a good keeper is worth 10-12 pts a season but I can't see that with George I'm afraid.

I keep trying to defend long because last season he kept us in more games than he cost us. Credit great stop in the 1st half but on stroke of HT it was terrible from George Long for that 1st goal. He shouldve kept hold as absolutely No excuses for parrying it. It was Hardly a powerful shot

I agree with that, but when Howard was in goal i very rarely came away from a game thinking bloody hell how did he save that? whereas Long there were a lot of games last season where i thought that
Im not saying that we should stick with him,he doesn't give me a confidence at the moment and I think he ought to be replaced at the moment for the sake of his career. What I don't agree with though is ironically cheering him after making a mistake.
Surely he must have something about him for Adams,Wilson,Morgan,Weir,Clough,Adkins and Wilder all to put him in their team?

Has he or his mum got something on a board member?

We have 1 solid centre half who will become a fans favourite - the other is very very suspect.

The kid up front game our 2 CH's a torrid time all game.

Which CB is the favourite? I thought they were both very solid to be fair, very encouraging to say they were playing in front cock up George.

Everyone does. It's when you keep making the same ones over and over that it becomes tiresome.

Yep, but Collins has gone now.

As for Long, Almost 100 first team games at the lane, 22 years old and a handful of mistakes, normally in shite sides. Improved year on year and the experience he's gaining has certainly benefitted him. He's benefitted from time away from the first team in the past and come back much better. So Wilder will need to manage him if he has a lot of issues (especially with fans jeering him). But personally i'm looking forward to seeing keep us in more games than he loses us, just like he has done over the past few years

Time to get in an experienced keeper who will command his box and communicate with his back 4.

To be honest, I couldn't give a shit what benefits him. We aren't here for his benefit. I want what benefits the Blades, and having him in goal doesn't. He isn't good enough.

He has made far more than a handful of mistakes. Thankfully, not all of them have cost us goals. There have been plenty of crosses and hopeful punts into the box flapped at and plenty of simple shots fumbled.

I just want what's best for us, and unfortunately, that's a better goalkeeper.

Listened on Blades Player and i was embarrassed. He's a decent Keeper. He needs a break and a clean sheet or two

Jeering is cringeworthy and counter productive.

He isn't s decent keeper though.

In shite sides because he is a major part of them ,how can you defend him ,hes hopeless

Well those benefits to him have benefitted the blades as well, because he's come back stronger

I'd say long in goal benefits the blades, you don't, fair enough. However, whilst he's here and he's in goal for the Blades, do you agree that during a game, jeering him will only be a negative?

Good keeper and improved a lot over the years

Simon Tracey, Alan Kelly, Mel Rees, Paddy Kenny and even Phil Kite - all good keepers of the 90's and 00's. Since then a bag of complete shite, what's happened to our keeper recruitment? I feel for Long, nice kid but it's never going to work for him here now, he's going to get hammered for every mistake. Wilder needs to replace him fast.

Below is the my quote from another thread - it should answer your question. There is a reason Wilson was at Oldham. I fully accept it is early days, some of us lived through the last time we were relegated from this division with an "average" team - we have, IMO a poor and very fragile defence that is 3/4's new with very little scope to alter and as the season goes on will get worse - Rochdale, yes Rochdale, out played us on our own pitch.

"The problem is: the "new" wood isn't much better than the deadwood - the defence apart from O'Connell is useless and fragile."

Nobody jeered him, that is complete and utter bullshit mate, they ironically cheered him but that's hardly going to hinder him.

I think of the ones mentioned, only Tracey played for us below Championship (equiv) level.

Your answer may well be where we find ourselves

Made a complete hash of a cross at 0-0 that could've cost us. Made one very good stop, and then gifted a goal. Flapped at another cross in the second half.

The lad makes some saves he's not supposed to have a chance at but that's worthless if you're giving goals away. If automatic promotion is the goal then you can't be dropping points like this.

Disagree pal, millions of players have been at clubs like Oldham and progressed (no disrespect to Oldham). Deane and Agana came from the reserves sides at Donny & Watford and didnt do too bad did they. I thought the positive from today was the two CB's, both impressed me.

did you count how many times O'Connell covered across for Wilson? Too many for me.

we beg to differ............lets leave it a few months.

I was to busy shutting my eyes when the ball went within 30 yards of Long to notice!! Really though I thought Wilson made some excellent interventions himself and looked composed on the ball. Guess we all see different things.

Thought the big lad up from for Rochdale gave particually Wilson a torrid time.

His balls down the South stand corridor in the 2nd half were woeful - some like to call them, long balls.

His "launch" balls, given oceans of time in the 2nd half when we played hoof balls were awful.

HIs row Z clearances are all too frequent

Yes, we see things different.

Jeering won't help, and I do find the ironic cheers embarrassing. That much we can agree on.

I can also see how an improvement in Long would benefit us. I just haven't seen enough improvement to make me think he warrants a first team place.

The problem is the three new defenders aren't confident in him. His display at Bolton, not the goal, had them at sixes and sevens. Yes a good save today but that dropped cross was almost as bad as the goal. We can't keep giving throws away in line with the penalty area because he won't come early.

He did his usual in the second half when dithering, as the centre half expecting him to come and claim a through ball.
It's his decision making that concerns me.
That flap in the first half...he was never gonna catch it in that group of players, he should have just punched it to make sure it was cleared.
At least he came out well to block that shot in the first half, but it was nothing other than you would expect a keeper to make.
Wasn't sure exactly what he tried to do with the goal, the ball was spinning, but moving that slowly..if he couldn't get full hands on it to smother it...push it out for a corner.
For the record, i don't jeer, or ironic cheer during a match....it doesn't help.

Goal keepers need confidence! Constant jeering and sarcy comments certainly arn't going to help. By the way who's to say the new experienced keeper won't make mistakes! If we scored a few we might win a few. No goals no wins.
