Long needs to go

Every match Long plays, we need to score two to have a chance of three points...

I've not seen enough improvement since he returned from his loan spell at Motherwell, which if truth be told, he had one good game and that was the TV at Ibrox in the Play Off.

What is it that Adkins/Wilder sees that makes him our no.1 ... and the No.1 no.1 at that.

I don't believe we have a chance now of the PL GK entertaining us, started today.

I wish everyone would stop moaning about long.

It's not even as if it's a key position on the pitch. With a decent defence and stalwart midfield we don't need a strong keeper. Indeed we could even play without one against most of these poor first division sides.

Quality whooshing....
Second sentence is Class A.
Bravo! Bravo!

They talk about managers who've "lost the dressing room".

Think it's fair to say George has "lost the Kop" (& the South Stand, & the John Street).

We can't afford to have a "wet behind the ears" goalkeeper in George Long. We desperately need an experienced keeper who can organise his defence and give them a bollocking if required. The defence also have to have faith and confidence in the teams No1.

My opinion of Long is that whilst he make a fair few fundamental errors e.g the two today, he will also make at least an equal number of brilliant saves saving certain goals, e.g the save at Bolton and today. Whilst most other keepers in league 1 will make less mistakes but also don't save as many certain goals as Long. I stand by my opinion he will make it as a goalkeeper but it won't be at united now unfortunately as too many fans are now waiting for him to make mistakes and then moronically cheer him next time he gets the ball

Wabaw,

Every keeper makes good saves.
George made a good save today when he came out and spread himself with their player clean through.

However with Long I worry when the ball goes near him. When he comes out to take across I worry and when a player shoots from 30 yards I worry.

It's not a good sign.
Wonder how the defence feel?

For all of Long's faults, what bright sparks decided to jeer him in the first half? He's a confidence player and it will hardly help if he's getting stick from his own crowd. People need to drop their agenda with him. He's not as bad as people make out. Yes we could do better but Wilder is playing him so lets engage brain before jeering him, 2 games into the season.

I have a pint of what you're on please.

Well Ive said he won't make it at United and he makes fundamental mistakes which I'm assuming you agree on, making some great saves can't really be disputed as he made a great stop today and from Pratleys header at Bolton just this season , and with him making it or not being down to opinion (I never said he'd be destined for the premier league or anything) My original post doesn't really sound that stupid does it?

I agree jeering mid- game does not help but he is woeful and simply not good enough at the moment. The mistake for the goal really was pathetic and he made another howler earlier which could also have led to a goal.

That's exactly right. The sign of a good goalkeeper is doing the simple things well. Commanding your area, gathering crosses, distributing the ball well, being in the right position, handling the ball safely. Not "reflex" saves. Long can do great reflex saves but he struggles with just about everything else.

Not a good keeper therefore and never will be.

It's been obvious for years now but before the excuse was he's only young. Age doesn't have a lot to do with it. You can tell at 17 or 18 if they're any good.

At least some people can!

Some are still in denial!

A goal keeper at THIS level can't afford fumbles - think Southend last season - probably cost us the game.

2 fumbles today - 1 from the corner - nearly a goal and then the goal itself.

Sure, most wouldn't jeer - fans are just absolutely fed up of mediocrity all over the pitch, including for me, some of the new signings.

Tried to be open minded as I thought he would be ok with solid centre halves ! We have them now and .......
New keeper please !! Off for a pie !
As ever UTB!

We have 1 solid centre half who will become a fans favourite - the other is very very suspect.

The kid up front game our 2 CH's a torrid time all game.

He should be big enough and ugly enough to take it on the chin. If he can't then he's picked the wrong career. I'm saying that as someone who has never booed and never will, but if others choose to that's up to them; they have paid good money to follow the team.

You are right about the jeering, however I would argue at the moment he is as bad as people make out. We were very fortunate that he didn't cost us the game today. George gave us the heads up after 15 minutes dropping a simple catch under little pressure. The lad is also capable of making great saves, but we need a keeper with confidence & consistency.

No proper fan would sarcastically cheer their own goalkeeper during a game. What good does that do?

He has also.lost the back four. On the second half it looked like they didn't want to pass back to him when they had the opportunity to.

He parried the slowest shot ever into the path of a striker, who walked it home.

He flapped at a shot at Grimsby.

He made a hell of a lot of mistakes last season.

For a keeper thats been a regular starter over the past 3 seasons, he does not seem to be improving. I think i read someone on here say Ramsdale is a better prospect than Long and he's developped far more at the same age than Long did, that speaks volumes. Maybe its because he hasn't got much competition behind him, im not sure, one things for certain i don't feel confident when Long is in goal.

The 44th minute they shoot from edge of the area, it's partially blocked taking off all the pace so Long ends up with an easy save but he spills it and they're player scores from the rebound.

Obviously the parial block must have put heavy spin on the ball and George underestimated the difficulty of the save. An real gift of a chance for their striker to put it into an empty net.
Don't know what possessed him to parried the ball, keepers seem to do that a lot recently - its certainly not just Long.
Its a good example why players should follow through after a shot.

I agree with that, but when Howard was in goal i very rarely came away from a game thinking bloody hell how did he save that? whereas Long there were a lot of games last season where i thought that
Im not saying that we should stick with him,he doesn't give me a confidence at the moment and I think he ought to be replaced at the moment for the sake of his career. What I don't agree with though is ironically cheering him after making a mistake.
Surely he must have something about him for Adams,Wilson,Morgan,Weir,Clough,Adkins and Wilder all to put him in their team?

Was he being jeered prior to fluffing a cross and cocking it up for the goal....no so why does it matter? Oh didums is he getting upset on his £1000's per week bless him

Listened on Blades Player and i was embarrassed. He's a decent Keeper. He needs a break and a clean sheet or two
