I spent the time and money of going to see our beloved United at Meadow Lane last night. I just wished I could have seen the game! All around were stood for the majority of the match so my view was pretty limited. The view of our first goal was obscured completely and our second was obscured at the last minute as the people in front of me stood at the last moment.

I understand people having varying views on sitting or standing but for short, elderly, children or the infirm have little chance to see a match properly if people IN SEATED AREAS do not confirm to a seated stadium policy.

One way to overcome this problem would be to have club stewards ensure that fans are seated. That would not suit those who prefer to stand.

What seems to be a way to overcoming the problem without upsetting anyone would to have designated standing areas (seats could still be available to satisfy the Taylor recommendations) and other areas of each stand could be classed as seated only.

Surely not too difficult solution to implement if Football clubs could get their act together.

PS
Can anyone describe the Murphy goal last night as I missed it completely. My son missed it too and he is over 6ft tall.

It's happening. I, on the other hand, prefer to stand during matches but can fully appreciate that others want/need to be seated during games. This seems the best solution for all, there's nowt worse than getting into a game and having people behind me shouting 'siddarn', just as it will be frustrating when you can't see the game, I'm sure.

I feel safe seating is a perfectly sensible solution to a long-standing (pun intended) problem.

Looking forward to the day when standing is back
At the same time hoping that by the time it does I shall still be able to.

Never enjoyed sitting at a football match - not conducive to the excitement and energy required to watch a game of football - just doesn't sit well with me

We stood all the way through at White Hart Lane as we did at Villa last year - there seems to be a more relaxed attitude at Premier League grounds for some reason !

I prefer standing at away games. always have. I realise that some can't stand and/or are too short to see if standing.

I grew up on the Kop and as a bit of a short arse anyway, I remember having my hand on the seat ready to jump onto the seat to watch each attack. It's the same now. You watch the Kop stand up when JCR or Murphy collect the ball out wide. Same at corners too. Everybody can see if seated but as soon as the player runs to take it people stand up.

The Kop is the worst stand. You're up & down more than a brides nightie

The biggest problem with standing at the lane is people mistakenly believing DD is the back row of JSS...

There's no way a steward was going to get everyone to sit down last night, and I think that's generally true of crowd control situations. AFAICS stewards are just put on the front line as someone to blame for not doing their (impossible) jobs.

The authorities will take a very long time to move on the issue of standing, though they might eventually. In the meantime istm it's up to individuals to act for themselves, if possible. Last night it seemed like those down the front were happy to sit and from about a third of the way up everyone else was standing.

Is it normally like this at away games? Can anyone comment? If so then it might be worth considering sitting nearer the front?

I know it's not ideal, and it might not work at all but it's a thought.

Another alternative is to buy a seat in another part of the ground. Again, not ideal.

All that said I think last night was a bit unusual bc of Saturday adding 100s to the away crowd and the closeness of the fixture - normally I don't imagine it's a problem, or is it?

As an aside, the Notts County stewards were arseholes last night. I had a stand up shouting match with one. No one was sat where they were supposed to be, but we saw plenty of empty seats at the front. This steward would not let us go down there, until I stood in the aisle and refused to move, upon which the moron realised his mistake and allowed us down to the seats. I thought I was going to be ejected tbh, but I cannot stand such levels of incompetence.

Matt Done's finish for his goal is unusual!
I thought he looked like a clumsy Bergkamp (oxymoron?).

He certainly has an ability to bundle the ball over the line from anywhere in the 6 yard box. It may not look pretty but it's been highly effective so far and long may it continue!

Doesn't like breaking the back of the net does he?

BTW does everyone know you can watch this in slow motion if you click the Setting wheel and then choose the Speed option?

I just watched it on 0.25 bc I couldn't figure out whether he'd thrown it in ("HANDBALL!") but I don't think he had.

You don't always get the choice of where you'd like to sit. Personally speaking I don't like to stand at matches any more, solely due to having rather bad arthritis and if I stand at a match then it hurts like hell after a while. And what really gets on my tits is those who stand treating people who want to sit down as lesser fans. If you've paid for a seat then sit the fuck down. Just because lots of people stand doesn't make it right. I'm all for German style safe standing areas, it'll help sort these problems out.

But I love that moment in the Kop when we all suddenly stand. It's like a rumble of thunder as everyone gets up, and we're holding our breath with anticipation. It obviously doesn't always pay off, but it's that single moment, that hope, that is so exciting.

Well theres nobody that sits in the stand behind me
I do stand up occasionally and have had no complaints
Whats your point !!!
My point is that many people mistakenly believe DD is the back row of JSS.

Don't worry, you're in good company. I had to argue with the ticket office once when they wouldn't sell me a ticket on EE because according to them it didn't exist.

Had similar issue during the Crewe cup game, the issue is that stewards can't be arsed to get into potential conflict, and given that they're probably paid peanuts I can't really blame them. That said, that's probably because I was down low in a stand with poor rake that caused that (see also the Kop), didn't have any issue at Villa.

Clearly want standing areas back though. Been to plenty of games overseas and it works excellently there (as well as being much cheaper). Would love to see the Kop redeveloped into a two tier with the bottom tier standing, but that's clearly not going to happen, politicians won't want to get involved, particularly when there's the likes of Chelsea's lot yesterday ruining things for everyone

It doesnt exist in my part of the JSS near the Kop
So DD is the back row and EE doesnt exist. There is no way anybody can sit behind me unless theyre behind glass

The unwritten rule of sit down unless it's looking like a goal might happen seems to work most of the time where i am, but don't see any reason why safe standing is a bad idea.

They wouldn't even have to change the stands, just say buy a ticket here if you wish to stand, here if you don't.

Authorities won't do anything about it, so the only, extremely difficult, way to solve the issue would be to have an unwritten rule amongst fans to ignore allocated seats at away games. If you want to stand go as far back as possible, and the opposite for sitting. I know that has countless flaws but still.

Its not a mistaken belief its fact
Unless Row EE is behind the glass and I couldnt be arsed what some of the people who sit there thought of me standing up
That's the thing about a mistaken belief, you mistakenly believe that it is not mistaken. I can assure you that I have been sitting on row EE for over a decade, and not behind any glass.

But back to the original topic, you illustrate my point well!

Please enlighten me
As I have stated previosly Im on DD and there is nobody sat behind this row in our part of the JSS apart from those behind glass.Ive sat in the same seat since JSS was built
