we were in lower deck behind the goal , just to the side of the goal, and when Leicester took the lead you could hear the aye aye we are at again mob,limbering up . Luckily we managed to slip in 4 goals in the best attacking display in living memory , when the 4th went in the sheer relief was palpable , we all knew it was done and dusted, if Wilf Rostron can bobble one in from 28 yards we were on a roll.
The noise from 11000 or so blades in party mood has never been louder, and Agana ushering teddy bears off after the 5th summed up the atmosphere.The news was filtering through that the pigs had dropped , which doubled the delight , it was euphoria off the richter scale, lets get back to Sheffield and rub it in as much as it was possible.
I remember getting Bob Bookers jock strap as a souvenir, dont ask how and passing a half naked Dave Basssett over my head, if only I had some oil to anoint his feet that day -
 



Still my favourite ever match.

Say what you want about Bassett, but at its best that team was brilliant to watch. Deane, Agana, Wood and co were unplayable on their day. The pace, power, determination and finishing we showed in that particular game was awesome.

Thousands of Blades in the lime green shirt. Boiling hot. Incredible atmosphere created by our fans. And I do remember it being a bit "nawty" between the two sets of fans - both inside and outside the ground.

And when we heard the pigs had gone down too....knowing we had a long summer ahead to take the p!ss........unbelievable.

Final game of the season v the Foxes
Cant remember KO time.. anyone remember?

Went down with two other mates of mine in his new Ford Cortina (which later got hammered). Anyway, it took us 1 hour 30 to get from Firth Park to a pub near Filbert st. It was a top class boozer! I wish I remember the name of it. Soon after, I was around 70% sober to go through the turnstiles where I was greeted with 4/5000 blades fans on that side stand. Leicester go 1-0 up and the feeling around the away is (oh for f**k's sake, here we go again).. until we score 4 in the space of around 15 mins!! I invaded the pitch after Rostron's goal because the adrenaline was high! Second half was load and proud and Agana finished it off which cued another pitch invasion. The side stand felt like 200 degrees, it was absolutely boiling. I would be intrigued to know what the actual weather forecast was that day. FT and a mass pitch invasion. As we left Filbert st, my mate Kevin overheard a conversation saying that Wednesday are down.. though I didn't believe it at the time as I thought it is too much of an irony. But, as were on the M1, we could tune into radio Sheff were it was confirmed that 'Sheffield Wed have been relegated to Division 2'. The screams of delight were so loud that we almost crashed the car near a hard shoulder. But, it was written in the stars that the car would get destroyed.. because my other mate suggested that going to Hillsbro and having a bit of banter would be a good idea. And so we did, as we drove through Infirmary Rd, our windows were down as we gave them the middle finger and the simple anecdote of 'Were up, your down'. As we reached the final hurdle of Leppings Lane, our winding up 'mission' came to an end in vandalising style. As soon as my mate pops his head out of the window to wind them up, we were greeted by a ton of bricks and a few Wednesday fans kicking the punching our number plate (dont ask why). The bricks were thrown on the car bonnet, one of our tyres were punctured, and the back window was completely cracked and slightly smashed. (It wasn't my car, I didn't give a shit). As I got home, I had a bit of banter with my neighbour who was a die hard Wednesday fan.

Fantastic day it was.. And I don't think anything like that will happen again.
 
I was living in London at the time. I went up with some lads, total nutters, in a van. I remember lots of fighting with Leicester townies before the game, and I didn’t really want to get involved. It was pretty nasty. The match was a blur but I remember I was on the pitch. My mate is in the video footage, shirtless, celebrating one of the goals. I’ve not spotted myself.

After the game I ended up going to Sheffield to celebrate instead of returning home to London. I didn’t fancy the return trip with the hoolies, who were more into fighting than celebrating. My brother’s girlfriend at the time had driven down from Sheff in an old Citroen 2CV with a retractable roof. We piled in and tonned it up the motorway, and ended up driving up and down London Rd, with the roof off, singing “He’s Fat, He’s Round, He’s Taken Wednesday Down”. The atmosphere on London Rd that night was amazing, never seen anything like it.

Quite possibly my best day as a Blade.

I took my three young lads and after the celebrations had finished we realised we had lost our nine-year-old (this was on the Leicester Kop) ... he was about 50 yards away celebrating with Blades who were throwing him up in the air. He had a blue scarf round his neck that Leicester fans had given him. Great day.
 
I was 9 but remember it well. I'd been to lots of games that season because we used to go up to Sheffield every other weekend to see family but I didn't go to Leicester, I think my dad wanted to but my mum wouldn't have it. So we watched it on Grandstand at home. There was live golf on I remember, and the football scores were scrolling at the bottom of the screen. I was sat in our living room wearing my full United kit, it was a beautiful day outside and my dad was drinking Labbatt's which they sold on tap at the offy on our estate. I wasn't that bothered about the Pigs getting relegated as it goes, but my dad was over the moon, he hates them. When it came through that we'd gone up I ran out onto the green at the back of our house and kicked a ball around for ages on my own screaming "Deane, 1-0!" or "Agana, 2-1!" when I smashed the ball against the neighbours fence.
 
The failure to get a ticket for that day was heartbreaking. Later I sat in my ma's back garden with a can, laughing my head off.

Deano's goal that day is still my favourite all time blades goal. Not a pretty one but the drama and emotion of it has never been bettered in my opinion. Pesch v Forest a close second.
 
I'd moved to London in Jan 89 and travelled up for most home games until March 1990 when things started getting going with the person who would become mother my children. I had also seen a fair few away ones, including the 5-0 thrashing at West Ham.

However, come late April and early May I was on holiday in France with said woman and had to ring up my dad from a callbox on some campsite near Marseille to find out the score. He told me they had lost at first, but then told me we had won 5-2. I remember finding the second bit of info rather less believable than the first.
 
I had to choose between the Blackburn game and the Leicester game - I chose Blackburn on the basis that it was the first one.

Listened to the Leicester game on the radio while sitting on the floor behind the counter in Alpha Sports in Woodseats when I was supposed to be working.

What a day!

Alpha Sports. Happy memories. I bought most of my footy boots from there as a youth. It's a shame little independent shops like that were put out of business.

Probably best day ever as a Blade. Went down to get tickets on the Friday a full week before the game only to find a sign on the ticket office window saying Leicester sold out. Was absolutely gutted at the thought of missing the game and cursed myself for not getting tickets earlier. Decided a few days later that I had to had to get tickets somehow and took the Wednesday afternoon off work and drove down to Leicester. Spent the journey down thinking about what to say at the ticket office even coming up with a story about being an out of town Leicester fan. As it turned out bought 5 tickets for the upper tier behind the goal with no questions asked.

On the Saturday remember driving into Sheffield past the Lane to pick some workmates up. All the coaches were queuing around the car park and Cherry Street and the roads were packed with Blades about to set off, many having a drink outside the Railway. The drive down to Leicester just seemed a constant stream of coaches , cars and minibuses decked in red and white. Got to the ground and then reality set in that we were in the home end and needed to be careful. Walked up the steps and on to the concourse behind the stand. First thing I saw was a couple of Blades fans and thought at least we're not on our own. Walked up into the stand and couldn't believe how many other Blades were in there. As kick of approached more and more Blades fans came in and seemed to virtually to take the stand over. Remember a Leicester fan probably in his 70's coming in just before kick off, probably sat in that stand for years looking round thinking wtf.

Onto the game and we go one down early on. Some Leicester fans start goading the Utd fans and a group in front of us from the Blue Bell at Hackenthorpe (think this was Carl Bradshaws parents pub at the time) turn round to react. It looks as if it is going to get a bit nasty but the Paul Wood scores soon after and it all calms down. Think it dawned on the Leicester fans the sheer volume of Utd fans in that stand and thought better of it. The rest of the first half was unbelievable as Utd seem to score almost every time they attack and go 4 - 1 up. Leicester get one back on the stroke of half time meaning we can' relax just yet. Second half was bit nervy until Agana gets the 5th. and then the party starts.Scenes at the end were just incredible and the Pigs getting relegated was the icing on the cake. The journey back up the M1 was like a Blades conga.

Probably never experience a day like that again and never get tired of reliving it.
 



Didn't get a ticket until the night before and was told it was a single ticket on the home end. Went down there and went in the Turnstile pub near their ground. Because of the BBC2 United programme all the Leicester fans wanted to let it all kick off with them singing 'Where's your famous BBC'

Went in ground and found the whole stand was taken over by Blades fans. What an atmosphere.

What a result and when news came through from Hillsborough it made it a perfect day. Ended up back at home drinking champagne in the back garden and then into the Banner Cross pub. Didn't want the day to end.
 
Went to Blackburn but had given up hope of going to Leicester until my brother came up trumps with a ticket for the seats behind the goal in the "home" end upper tier. Went down in a mini-bus with a load of lads from the local pub................went to Loughborough and Quorn before the game - Quorn had a junction with pubs on each side...all rammed with Blades quite literally helping themselves to pints. Got to the ground late...shirtless with white seat covers on our heads.we looked like a KKK meeting !!! Already 1-0 down by the time we made our way in but then all hell broke loose.........goals raining in and the obviously pee'd off locals trying to retake their stand - I think i spent more time looking for further local incursions than I did on matters on the pitch!!!..........remember all the pitch invasions and the "PLEASE KEEP OFF THE PITCH" announcements.........!!! Bit of a blur beyond that....can remember being told pigs had been relegated and can remember popping champers on the road where all the away coaches and mini-vans were parked. Sheffield was messy....very messy............best bits......stopping traffic on Mansfield road bowing down to Bradders and his family...my mate trying to go through the car wash...when he didnt have a car.......and a hilarious trip to A&E where everyone in there seemed to be Blades who had broken bones falling off tables celebrating our promotion and the demise of our piggy friends !!!! Truly a day of days and payback in spades for the crap we had to endure from our neighbours.................UTB !!!
 
Really enjoyed reading through this thread, here’s my memories for what they’re worth.

Didn’t get tickets for united end, not sure why as was home and away every match those (stella) years, drove down to Leicester:
- “five tickets for t’match on satdi please love”
- “you’re not from round here are you?”
- “Yes we live at coalville (or whatever – as cunning as our plan got was to memorise one of the place name signs on the way to the ground)
- “go away or I’m calling the police”

So we hung around outside pestering strangers to go and buy tickets for us, and eventually succeeded, only thought when one agreed that he could well scarper with our £100 or however much as we were waiting round the corner. Anyway he came up trumps bless him.

Day of the match, driven down in mates Peugot 205 GTI (red) dressed incognito and jealous of everyone wearing the luminous shirt, few stellas in car, few stellas in a pub, sat in upper tier behind goal trying to work out if any other blades in that part, it became clear quite quickly we were in the majority so all fine!

After the match I’m sure we saw sir Bob walking calmly through the car park carrying 4 cans - although this might have been an hallucination.
Back to the Birley double quick where trays of champagne were circulating – the first and last time I’ve ever seen that!

I was a month shy of 16 and went on a coach going from Woodseats with my Dad. Set off at around 9.30 on a deathly quiet coach, plenty of nerves for all and no doubt hangovers from the previous nights sedating beers for most. The pub we were going to was about 30 minutes away from Leicester and for some reason went via the centre of Nottingham where we saw a few Forest fans starting to make their way to the Sty and wished them well.

The pub was completely empty as we arrived, but we were expected and plenty of bar staff were on. I'm not sure they expected to be quite as busy as they were though as the beer was getting knocked back as though it was going out of fashion. At this point my Dad had restricted me to supping pop, but after he'd downed the first couple he was OK having halves so long as I made sure I didn't get pissed. Which left me in a minority of one as everyone else was kalied by 1. The landlady had clocked this and bless her she went and made stacks of sandwiches for everyone to mop up the ale.

The trip to the ground seemed to take forever, especially with the police checkpoints, but we got into the side stand bang on the halfway line with a couple of minutes to spare. As others have said, it was like a furnace in there but the atmosphere was special. For some reason, even after we went 1-0 down I was sure we'd win. Wood's goal came soon enough to ensure fans weren't panicking, and then came the second goal. After all that happened before Deano bundled it in, it was inevitable that people would be on the pitch. I can still hear the tannoy bloke with his, "Please go back to your seats and please keep off the pitch." but there was no chance after that. Leicester were just blown away and the second half was a happy non-event where the only excitement other than Agana's goal was listening for how games were going at Bournemouth, Middlesbrough, Derby and S6.

The evening back on Woodseats was amazing, still boiling hot, beer flowing for all (including me) and a huge atmosphere of celebration in a Pig free zone as we went from pub to pub with nearly everyone in their fluro away shirts. It was probably just as well the licensing laws meant the pubs shut at 11, the level of mass refreshment on show was something I've barely seen since. A truly fantastic day.

Now of course we all know the Pigs went down that day, but I never realised that extended highlights of that game are available, with footage of the Pigs celebrating as they falsely believed Derby had equalised followed by tears and an interview with Fat Ron. Well worth a view!

I managed to drive down to Leicester and get tickets in the upper tier behind the goal. Was speaking to one of their fans through the fence to the left before the game and he was a friendly guy but there seemed a few cocky teenagers amongst them acting hard.

Amazing game and it seemed we would win all the way through the match. Even when they equalised.

Remember the drive back up the M1 - lots of car horns constantly tooting. Da Da DaDaDa Dada dada THE BLADES!!!!
 
Just remember a sea of fluorescent green shirts all the way back to Sheffield...I had had a few mind...great day!
 
Bassett remains my all time favourite manager , just for sheer entertainment , was never ever dull , we all know we will never be top 8 top league with our bargain buys but boy did we put the willies up the big boys at times , beating man utd liverpool and Arsenal was a possibility , purely on spirit and drive.Harris was the last of the old school when football was 11 v 11 literally, when if the top opposition had 3 not performing you had a chance , not like today when they can change 3 under performers for 60 m quids worth of talent , so Bassets achievements were against greater odds

It was a truly great shop. I might have sold you some boots! I used to ask parents of kids who wouldn't choose boots who they supported and then say "Simon Tracey / Brian Deane / David Hirst (or whoever) wears boots like these" - always worked a treat.

The stock room was great - an Aladdin's cave of squash balls, gum shields, cricket bats, every sort of football boot stud going, etc, etc.

Happy days.
 
Was on the little side stand for this game, easiest stand in the ground to get on the pitch. Red hot day and Blades fans seemed to be in every stand. Remember the big pitch invasion at the end, when Leicester tried to kick off and they simply got swamped by the amount of Blades and they soon f***ed off. Looking back the second goal was the best when about half a dozen shots got cleared off the line, in all the chaos with the amount of elbows and knees flying in, United totally took out the ex pig goalkeeper, who was f***ed for the rest of the half. Cherry on the top of the cake was when confirmation came through of the pigs relegation, with about 10,000 Blades on the Leicester pitch chanting "he's fat, he's round, he's took the Wednesday down, Atkinson".

Going to the bus after remember this long road just rammed packed with Blades coaches parked up as far as the eye could see and the journey back up the M1 just a procession of red and white. Once back in Sheffield went supping around Handsworth, all the pubs packed with Blades fans spilling out onto the road - Handsworth Road down to one lane each side - and not one pig fan in sight. Brilliant day, brilliant night, well overdue another like it.

Was in that part of the ground with my dad but didnt run on the pitch. We stood on our seats throughout the game and I had to watch him cos a little nudge from a Blade next to him could unbalance him (he fell over and that caused more pain to his ear just after Wilf Rostron's goal) and he was suffering from a bad ear infection that day
 
I mentioned on the Darlington thread that it would have been interesting to hear the views from Darlo fans about our promotion day in 1982. Similarly I would've enjoyed reading Leicester fans views on that day in 1990.

I can only remember one opposition trophy / promotion winning game at BDTBL and that was Leeds in 1992. I think they were still waiting for the Man Utd result but must admit their celebrations don't stick in my memory.

As for the Blades, if Carlsberg did promotion parties.....

Our match against L**ds were played at lunch time. Man U were playing at Liverpool later in the afternoon and shown live on TV. Man U lost 2-0
