'League one/Championship players'

Clearly this is his method, and clearly it works. No doubt.

The reason I mention that specific line is because it stood out as unusual, at least to me, anyway. (Maybe you're right and I need to go back and watch more post-match conferences to get a better picture).

I've seen Wilder tear into his players before. All well and good. But it just seems unusual to criticise the players in a way that is not just about a specific performance, but about their inherent talent, level and ability. It's one thing to say 'you were poor', but another to say 'your natural level is poor'.
I agree, that's far. We don't know what has happened. Perhaps some of the players have been a bit too vocal in having pl skills?
But yeah, it's rarely good to insult people, and not be constructive.

He said so at the end. He doesnt care that we played well last three games. He cares we didnt today
Yeah, this was one part of the interview that surprised me and I loved it.
I would be tempted to put this into context with recent performances and results, but I love that he doesn't, and that he demands high quality and effort in every minute of every game. It's a fantastic attitude.

The difference is Egan is putting the effort in.

The difference is when contracts are brought up its usually Lunnys name mentioned and his contract saga has been rumbling on a while. Wilder never likes a contract to come down to the last year.

You’re known as a Premier League player when you retire as a Premier League player.

Chris Wilder understands this
Surely by the same logic our players therefore are not championship/league one players since they haven't retired playing in such leagues?

You must’ve missed the point of my comment, I’ll try again. Don’t assume that Wilder is referring to Lundstram.

However, as you mention it, it’s funny how “Lundstram isn’t putting the effort in” hasn’t been mentioned before today.

I pointed out in the shoutbox earlier that Lundstram did more in the game than Fleck and the excuse was that Fleck is playing with an injury, completely ignoring that Lundstram was supposed to be out for the season with an injury. But I suppose is the scapegoat hat fits...

For what it’s worth, I’d be interested in seeing your list of players who did put the effort in today. I’m assuming it won’t take you long.

Well if Lunny wants the same agent to take him down the Mark Duffy road it is probably best for all concerned that he moves elsewhere sooner rather than later.

Brought up by who?

Definitely done to ground a few & get a reaction from others after tonight’s performance . He’s right if we want to compete at the top you’ve gotta turn out the performance levels of previous 4 games .
Thought we lacked in a bit of leadership out there today , someone to get them fired up and mix it up a bit .

He knows how to get the best out of these lads & think we’ll see a better performance against Everton

I think most would agree Lunny has been shite since the Bournemouth game. Maybe he sees it as his chances are being limited since Berge arrived.

You think?
I sense some sarcasm there..

Well yeah of course. But this was emotional to the point where it felt like there's something deeper to it than just 'Let's get them going for the next match'. There's some more meaning to those comments than just pure calculated kick up the backside. That's what i'm getting at.

He’s pissed, and they know the consequences for not doing the bare minimum.
He didn’t clearly single any individuals out, even though I’m sure a few feel like he did, but if they believe the cap fits then they also agree they fit the description.
They don’t like having to deliver to these expectations, then they’re best not signing any new deals with us because that’s the standard you have to meet every week.

Yeah agree. It's quite smart the way he calls them out without naming names. They will of course know who they are, if they haven't put the effort in.

We hate it when pundits and other fans describe our players this way. Tonight Wilder did, and has done on at least one other occasion recently as well.

You could argue he's earned the right to do so. He is their manager, so has the closest understanding of their abilities and level.

I have to admit though, as much as I love Chris, this doesn't quite sit right with me. The players have surely earned the right to be called Premier League players. If we were getting relegated I could understand, but they've held their own pretty much all season.

He was spot on with his assessment of our performance. We were very poor. I certainly appreciate his honest, critical attitude, and push for quality. But I think calling them this was pushing it too far.

Maybe it was an attempt to get a response from them, but given that it was a somewhat emotional tirade, it seemed like he really meant it, rather than just mind games.
There's a lot of contract negociation in his statement. Hes just keeping their feet firmly on the planet
Don't want any Wendy type high wage contract wasters at shangrilane

He also said there aren’t lots of changes planned so he’s stuck with them, which was an interesting titbit.

The player ratings since the Bournemouth game would suggest otherwise, or they at least suggest that he’s been no worse than the other midfielders and even better than some, in the majority of games since the Bournemouth game.

You don’t have to repeat everything you read in the shoutbox.

Think there’s only a few who are top half PL quality tbf, but as a unit they are obviously worth more than the sum of their parts

I think League One is a stretch 🤣

I think it’s a wake up call for individuals to stop slacking off when we have something to play for. From his comments about contracts it sounds as though he is saying they need this club more than we need them and they should realise it.

Chris Wilder is a great manager.
The players are Premiership players.
Brendan Rogers has watched our previous games and worked out we try to work the ball into the box before shooting and set up to counter it and it worked. We didn't get an effort on target. Wilder didn't have a plan to counter this he blames the players because he's never wrong. Ask yourself this; which players looked like 'they were playing as individuals'? None of them, they were playing their usual game.

Individually he's probably right, for some at least. It's his managerial ability which has collectively made them Premier League players.
He is looking for a reaction ! It maybe some have shot there bolt .Always going to be casualties on reaching the promised land.
The key here is picking the ones who can sustain the standards the premiership demands, that is the hard bit.
Wilder has done great so far on our way through from league one discarding the players who cant sustain higher level standards we are at that juncture now getting it right is more important than ever
A task I dont think he enjoys but a necessary one if we are to improve, I'm not talking about wholesale changes as on our budget that's not possible or necessary..
Wilder will know I'm sure who they are !
A tough task when players have given it there best shot .

No they weren’t, they didn’t have the courage or conviction in their game that Wilder demands. You’re wrong

Tonight’s comments from wilder won’t sit well with the players. That’s what he wants.

he didn’t single out a player for a poor performance, he used the collective.

A reason we are where we are is because wilder puts belief into the same players that came from league one

A reason we are where we are is because wilder demands standards that these players don’t even believe is possible

a reason we are where we are is because when we dont reach those standards, even for a game, wilder reminds them of the standards
That’s a great spot. He didn’t single anyone out which would have been harsh in a public forum. I’m ok with it directed at the group.

We have lost away at all the top 5
Our players just can't bridge that gap
It really is that simple
Most of their squads are between half to one billion quid to assemble
We made all 5 subs yesterday and not one of our players we brought on would get in those teams or bench.
We play teams who can bring on 100m pounds plus subs . Players we'd love to have
The gulf in our first season is just a stepping stone short. As we add to our squad it will lessen the gap
It only took us an extra 12 months to tame the championship
We have to accept improving in the prem going to take longer

Perhaps they are championship standard as individuals but playing as a team beyond that level.
Absolutely right. This is the key point he makes - they have to be 100% on it as a whole team to compete. If the intensity drops we will always look vulnerable. Many premiership sides can get results with players operating at 80% just because they have such talent. When those top teams are really busting it they can tear any team in the world apart - just look at what Liverpool and Man City have done to top sides this season.

Chris clearly stated what he meant-we werent aggressive enough. Nobody put in a tackle before 92nd minute. It's true Brendan put in some thoughts to counter us with a three at the back, but that's no excuse. Chelsea shifted their shape too, we got a result still.

This: Collectively, under Wilder and Knill, they are a good premier leagues side, which is why yesterdays performance was disappointing for supporters and unacceptable for the management.
They performed poorly as individuals against a side no better than Spurs, Wolves or Chelsea, on paper.
An outstanding collective performance would have put Leicester to the sword. Whatever the reason, the team let him down, and he is quite within his rights to say so, publicly.
