Fascinating clip. I think I read that it was unfortunately really foggy that day so most of the fans couldn't see the action anyway and a lot had left before the end of the game. 68,287 was given as the official attendance and of course we won 3-1.

Our League average that season was 18,428. Disagree that 22,000 was a good attendance for FA Cup 6th round in these years. FA Cup attendances was always much higher than league attendances. The attendance for the 4th round replay against Preston at BDTBL was over 34,000

I misread your earlier post. I thought 22,000 was the next home game attendance.

Someone somewhere has the original copy of a painting showing a moment in this game. In the lower left hand corner appear

the initials "JW" - presumably those of the painter and the number "93" - presumably the year it was painted. I have a copy on

the wall at home. Originally, it was on the wall in the boardroom of HFS Loans in the period when they were sponsoring

United about 10-15 years ago. it was given to me as a present by my son-in-law, an accountant, who obtained it when their

sponsorship ended. I wonder if anyone else has a copy or can tell something about its origin.


It portrays a moment in the United/Leeds game as seen by an imaginary observer about 50 feet or so above

the Railway Inn and looking down at the sacred ground. Most obvious is that spectators pack all available space right up to the

touch lines - including on the cricket pitch - with more trying to get in from Bramall Lane and Cherry Street. The play is towards

the Lane end with Leeds in the blue and white quarter shirts they wore in those days and looks as if they are on the attack!

Other very obvious features are the raised section with its flag above the centre of the John Street stand (which was destroyed

in the war)and that funny little red-painted corrugated stand situated at the Lane end of that stand which was there for many

years after the war. In the background can be seen St Mary's Church and about 12 or 13 smoking chimneys.
