Lane not chosen so what happens re expansion plans

I'm sad because I have seen one World Cup match in Sheffield, West Germany 5 Switzerland 0 in 1966 and would have liked a match at the Lane to make up the pair

My dad took me to watch the Switzerland v Spain match. I was only 4 at the time and have no recollection of going to that game

If England do get the tournament he'll have to put money where his mouth is - so to speak, because the financing can't all come from grants and such like surely?

Many will remember the rallying round when it got to the "Save Our Sick Birds" campaign, and the tins on Fargate and all the rest of it (I was a bit too young though). By all accounts, sackcloth and ashes wasn't in it.

Many will also remember the distinct show of fuck all after we'd gone to the Fourth, had (alleged in some cases) criminal chairmen, and at best thoroughly incompetent/self serving ones too, a three sided-ground, and looked into the Well Of Liquidation.

They'll get funding, which sticks in the craw as the business we support (notice the wording - oh, I'm cynical when the kids are ill), won't need anything like the sort of public funding which they'll need.

That's what is worrying me. If no problem with them getting the games but if they are going to get a free ground upgrade now that would piss me off.
The problem is that I've asked the question a few times on here and noone knows what the rules are for the grants. Are they getting 100% funding? Which would really annoy me, or have they got to find the majority of the £20 Million upgrades which would cheer me up no end.

There's no chance of any project being funded outright - otherwise you'd have had 92 different bids.

I think strappon's bitten off more than he can chew here, and let's face it, he can chew quite a lot.

They were bloody lovely though and we could have baths straight after each other without having to give it 10 mins to warm up.

Edit: Chuck down a Glacer mint first those stupid polar bears will do owt for them .

we never gonna get it after carlos tevez affairs because we made the F.A. Look like bent bastards. Also i hope wednesday host to team that hate each other or like iraq and iran or somethink like that and they blow up the stadium!
Or ground gets flooded then they might turn round and ask us to host it and then we can ask for 25million fee. :D

Can't say I go along with Highbury's sentiments.
I'll be hoping England don't get the tournament for the amusement factor.
And I do hope McCabe responds in the right way and decides he won't rest until he rubs collective noses in our success.

'KINNELL!!!! It's like watching someone with an SPD!

To be fair to the FA it was them that got us the compo. It was the PL we showed up.

You don't need to f--- the polar bears they are increasing in numbers, many more of them now than there was 20 years ago contrary to what the press tells you! Stick with girls they smell better !

Meh. Being picked before didn't do them any good:

Pigs host games in 1966 World Cup, relegated 4 years later, stay out of top flight for 14 years.

Pigs host games in Euro 96, relegated 4 years later, stay out of top flight for 10 years and counting...

Personally, my hope is that now we are not involved those running the club will focus more on the team rather than the ground or non-football activities.

Ok, I don't wish to use this as point scoring against Wednesday as some things are more important, however I have always been quite surprised that Hillsborough was continued to be used to hold 'neutral' games after the disaster in 1989. It is the biggest tragedy ever to bestow English football and I would have thought Hillsborough would have been rightly or wrongly black marked as a result.

It was 'de-listed' for a few years, but to be fair to them they did comply with the Taylor Report, and the wrongs and more wrongs of that day in 1989 don't need to be revisited.

It has had bugger all since the FA Cup semi-final replay between Chesterfield and Boro as a neutral venue, and I'm sure I read on here that someone had said that it would never be used again as such.

I have no problem with our rivals potentially hosting prestigious matches, but what does stick is that I'm paying for their financial recklessness in order for it to happen.

Bankrupting a club to play 2 games of international football between 2 second class football nations in 8 years time (maybe),not the cleverest idea.
Not worth getting worked up about ,lets just sit back enjoy Utd for the football league club we are and watch the shit implosion that will take place down the road.

Spot on with your comments, Sitters, let's hope they come true. I think we'd all prefer a successful Blades team to a successful bid to be a ground used in the World Cup in 2018. Both would have been nice, mind.

TBH I've seen this coming all along. I was around in the 60s when the pigs got the World Cup - it enabled them to self-finance the rusting shithole formerly known as Hillsborough. Back then Eric Taylor sucked up to 'Sir' Stanley Rous, the ground was paid for by grants and interest-free loans.

We should never underestimate the fact that the pigs always have had friends in (relatively) high places. The fact that they're all fuck-ups such as Betts, Blunkett, Hattersley, Ashton, Richards etc. makes you despair. The local politicians (see above) saw off Reg Brealey's proposed 'Bramall Centre' - a revolutionary (at that time) sports complex in the 80's under the spurious excuse of 'over development'. It was the final straw for Reg who told me personally that 'he couldn't beat the local Labour party'. Let's hope Mr McCabe doesn't similarly despair over this.

I'm sure most on here have travelled along Penistone Road past the sty? A broad, expansive road which in the 60s had flags of all the competing nations. Compare and contrast with Bramall Lane. This was earmarked for widening a few years ago (The Railway had been shut in preparation), until the council realised that they don't want to help United in any way, shape or form, and the scheme was abandoned.

Someone on here mentioned earlier about the wives/whores of all the corrupt decision-makers preferring to be in Spain as opposed to Sheffield. I'm afraid it doesn't work like that. Horses are traded, palms are greased, just as they were when London 'won' the 2012 Olympics. Now I'm sure the aforesaid wives/whores would rather be anywhere on earth that the violent, multi-cultural hellhole that London has become. Ditto South Africa next year.

And if it wasn't for these 'friends in high places', how come Hillsborough continued to host big games after the '89 disaster. When, by rights it should have been condemned and knocked down?

And then we come to the local press. The Star and Radio Sheffield are, and always have been, incredibly biased to the pigs. This morning, I've just seen the Sheffield Telegraph and it truly is a foretaste of what we can expect for the forseeable future - 'World Cup', 'investment', 'Worthington', 'let the good times roll!' erc. etc. Strafford couldn't have created a better self-publicising brochure.

So am I surprised? Not at all. Disappointed? Oh yes. Disappointed that the corrupt decision makers have again held sway.

It pretty much explains why this country is finished.

not round here mate - thier beer bellys and tattoos complement the stale cider and fag smell as they wobble past you f..in and blinding.

We've missed out on the potential to house 3 low grade international fixtures in 9 years time. In return, we wont add tens of millions to our debt, developing the stadium into twice the size it needs to be.

Is it just me that couldn't give a fuck about this?

Can we get rid of the old myth that it was the local Labour party who were responsible for the demise of Brealey's Bramall Centre?

Yes, it was the local Labour council who originally turned down the planning application, but please remember that Brealey appealed this decision to the Tory Environment Secretary and was again turned down.

Bear in mind that this was 1982 and at the high point of the clash between the very left wing Sheffield Labour Council and the very right wing Tory government and that Brealey was a staunch Tory, you will appreciate that if the government could have validly stuck one on the Council and done Brealey a favour, they would have done so. The fact that the government upheld the Council's decision must mean that the application was turned down purely on ordinary planning grounds.

A lot of sympathy for this view. After all a lot of us couldn't see the point anyway. If the stadium extensions go ahead it will be on a sound footing of being profitable from leisure conference and office space, not just to show off for a game or two.

As for 'does this confirm us as the lesser club' I've lcome to the conclusion that we are much more comfortable as the underdogs. We don't know what to do if were not battling some foe over an 'injustice' or bad luck.

I think this decision is best for both of us. The pigs can go on dreaming that they still warrant a lifestyle they can't afford, and we can use it to spur us on to bigger and better things.
