Lack of Urgency

No point buying anybody anyway

It'll only be a forward who gets no service, or a midfielder who isn't clever enough a player to provide any service, or a defender that can't defend

No point really, we've already got plenty of those

This was the reaction of this board after Wilders first 4 games .

I was the one who said Wilder “looked dreadful, ill almost“ and if you go back and look at that interview after the Millwall game I‘m correct he did.

I will not be saying similar about Slav but mainly because he looks like he might know some people who go around kidnapping Liam Neeson’s daughter and he might send them after me.

Some proper bed wetters on this forum, unbelievable Jeff ! I wouldn’t like to be beside some of you lot in the trenches. 1 practice match under our belts and then a lacklustre performance through not sharp enough minds or legs,I am not surprised we were not up to speed.
Moan after 10 games if the performances are still the same (I doubt it) when probably we may have offloaded a few and hopefully signed fresh faces .
We have a top manager who most people wanted but spit the dummy out after 1 game and question his selection, mind boggling,
Covid has been a killer for many teams finances and I’m sure we will be no different, don’t expect Messi any time soon with our millions of parachute money when at this moment people are in wrist slitting mode because we haven’t signed anyone, dear me.

Maybe. The whole pre-season/season so far has been a disaster. We've got a good manager and that's about it. Whether we have a squad that can play the way he wants to has sprung up as a potential issue, but early days as you say.

I'm not panicking. I don't think most people are. I genuinely thought we'd do some rebuilding and end up somewhere 6-9th this season. That hasn't happened, which does worry me. We've obviously started late, which would be hilarious if we missed promotion by 2 points, but I'm reaching concerned.

Concerns are understandable. There is a lot that needs to improve and we may have to rebuild as we go. We knew Slav started slow and the lack of pre season means that we will almost certainly be at the wrong end of the table after 5 or 6 games.

What I don't find understandable is predicting relegation, worrying about the style of play at this stage or saying that the season is write off after one match with a new manager.

Arghhhhhhhh! It’s only been one game!!!!

last time we were in the championship, we didn’t win the first two matches!

god knows what this forum will be like if we lose to Swansea…..who ironically was one of the teams we lost to in the opening matches of the 2018/2018 season.
Yes trying to remember who scored for Swansea that day

One of the most famous film quotes is "life is like a box of chocolates"
Well... Sheffield united are like a box of stardard fireworks.
Some look nice for 5 seconds and then it's all over, some do something totally different than what it says on the label, some fly off in the wrong direction, some are complete duds and to top it off the Catherine wheel doesn't spin and just explodes in your fucking face.
And... This box of fireworks didn't come cheap.

He's going to play possession based football. This will be a culture shock for our fans. I suspect I'll be reading lots on here about how we should be moving it quicker and going more direct.
It it necessary for possession-based football to produce a goal that you wait patiently until all your own players are marked by the opposition before you pass to the wings so that some fannying about with the ball can ensue , followed by a series of passes which eventually return the ball into our own box ?

Ask Pep if it works.

It was obvious to anyone remotely switched on after the first three games last season that we'd be relegated.

The Championship season is longer and one hopes that the team won't suffer a similar disastrous set back to losing O'Connell. That said, just occasionally it is easy to extrapolate from the early games what will happen, "bedwetting" or no.

The good new is that there are some simple things we can improve on from Saturday. Not starting Abbott and Costello upfront and playing three at the back for a start. The rest, replacing O'Connell and the entire midfield for example, might be a little trickier.

Seems that the club has no urgency at the moment- no urgency to attack on Saturday despite being 1-0 most of the game and no urgency in the transfer market. Really really worried for us this season, the squad needs a reshape desperately otherwise I feel we might do a Sunderland 17/18.

Without a significant number of changes to the team, there is a very real danger of, in the words of the OP, 'doing a Sunderland'.

Plenty of us said as much during last season's struggles, and games like Saturday's - whereby teams can beat us comfortably (as it should have been on clear-cut chances) with only 25% possession - will become commonplace.

It's not that the players are even bad players. We know they're not and we have seen them play some excellent stuff over the years. The problem is that the squad as it stands today - shorn of those certain pivotal individuals that inspired all that was good when we were in our pomp - is remarkable for having not a single player who can 'affect' a game.

We know that the rise under Wilder was largely about the functioning of the team unit. Outside of Duffy, we were never able to rely on a player who could decide a game on his own through a piece of outrageous skill. It was all about 9 or 10 players all functioning to get the result. And for 3 seasons (save for the major fall-off when just one cog - Coutts - broke) the unit worked brilliantly and we played excellent 'front-foot' football.

Unfortunately, though, that team of May 2019 doesn't exist anymore. For the last 14 months, this team has not been on the front-foot. It is a team conditioned to just 'stay in games'.

The OP is absolutely right about there being no urgency on Saturday even when we went behind - there wasn't. And why would there be? These players are used to going behind every week but versed in not 'panicking' and changing anything that they are doing. Just stay in the game. This is not the team that got promoted.

It was insipid pointless possession. The gaffer had a face like thunder and rightly so.

I've seen enough football over the decades to be able to recognise a team that has a terminal malaise. We have a team that is missing the very best parts of what made it great in May 2019, and which - due to the previous gaffer's mistrust of flair/creative players - has less stardust than perhaps any team I've seen at the Lane. If the unit doesn't work - and it rarely does now - then we can forget it because we don't have any individuals who can win games by themselves with some magic.

It's a team that smacks of Sunderland, of Stoke and of Huddersfield. A team that came down playing a style of football that simply wasn't trying to create chances and goals. Those clubs showed that you can't just flick a switch and become an attacking team because you've dropped down a division.

It's particularly hard to countenance because many of these players have been part of great things for the club in the past, and we all have many great memories. Unfortunately, though, numerous of them need replacing. The 'unit' and 'the system' is long since dead and we need players who can actually change games.

100% agree with all of that.

You’ll need a snorkel and goggles to be able to swim in all that fucking piss.

This is so accurate it hurts to read it.
It's a good job SJ didn't realise this before he signed on or he never would be here.
It is obvious that he didn't realise it , because he would have made major surgery part of his conditions for joining.
To avoid sliding further down , he needs to realise it PDQ.
Then decide on a solution , which cannot be superficial.
Then persuade the Prince to finance the changes.
Sell Rammers (he ain't all that) , sell Berge (he doesn't affect the outcome of games).
Get shut (however cheaply) of Burke, Brewster (abject mistakes) , Stevens, Norwood & Fleck (because they've run their course here) , Lowe, Robinson & Osborn (unless played in MF) (because you get what you pay for).
Play Freeman or dump him.
Play Lopata + buy another physically dominant CB.
Buy an entire new MF with some idea of going forward on the front foot.
It remains to be seen whether SJ is cute enough to see just how dysfunctional the present team is and , on realising it , persuade the club to sanction the radical surgery required , with no promise of promotion , because it will be a season of transition.
But hopefully we avoid relegation.
Then we just might have a pop at promotion in 22/23.
TINKERING AT THE EDGES WILL SEE US SLIDE.
