Thank you Roygbiv for the historical view of just how pessimistic the fan base can be, when things are not going our way.
In context, the truth is that, while we have much the same squad that delivered the team from league one to the PL, right now, we lack the key players that were responsible for that success. We can go back to the joys of Coutts and JOC in their pomp, but we cannot field a side that is coherent with either a back 4 or a back 3.

The overhaul necessary will take time, and I’m not sure that Slav or the board have convinced the players currently available.
The board don’t seem totally convinced that the new manager has the right ideas, and Slav has yet to convince the quality players that his ideas will work.

It will not be solved before this window closes, and probably not be working how it should before the end of the next one. It will come slowly but surely over the course of the season. The board needs to buy into Slav’s long term plan for the club style of football now, or it will take even longer, assuming he can be persuaded to stay.

In the meantime, players will come and go. Unlike the PL, the EFL is not awash with money, and many clubs are being conservative with their spending/selling of players. That is a muddle the club will have to work through, just like everyone else. I hope our club board has the collective will to be brave and to support the new manager in the same way they chose him.

We had very similar comments after the first two losses in our Championship promotion season. I'm not saying everything is going to be ok, I just think it's impossible to predict. I'll be amazed if the team we had out on Saturday is anything like the one that ends the season so how can anyone know what's going to happen under a new manager who hasn't had more than 1 proper game with us?

At the end of the day, nobody knows how it will turn out. Given the lack of movement off the field, the fact that some players have picked up where they left off last season, and the odd team selection and formation, promotion currently looks a long way off. That seems to me a more informed way of looking at it than “Brewster will come good”.

Some proper bed wetters on this forum,unbelievable Jeff ! I wouldn’t like to be beside some of you lot in the trenches. 1 practice match under our belts and then a lacklustre performance through not sharp enough minds or legs,I am not surprised we were not up to speed.
Moan after 10 games if the performances are still the same (I doubt it) when probably we may have offloaded a few and hopefully signed fresh faces .
We have a top manager who most people wanted but spit the dummy out after 1 game and question his selection,mind boggling,
Covid has been a killer for many teams finances and I’m sure we will be no different,don’t expect Messi any time soon with our millions of parachute money when at this moment people are in wrist slitting mode because we haven’t signed anyone,dear me.

Why not comment on the actual quality of the players or their performance instead of setting yourself up as some sort of psycho-analyst of other posters ?

You have no right to psycho-analyse me , but I would be interested to know who we should ship out / bring in , or how we might improve the tactics.

Concerns are understandable. There is a lot that needs to improve and we may have to rebuild as we go. We knew Slav started slow and the lack of pre season means that we will almost certainly be at the wrong end of the table after 5 or 6 games.

What I don't find understandable is predicting relegation, worrying about the style of play at this stage or saying that the season is write off after one match with a new manager.

No one is saying the season is a write-off , but many are saying we need to make some radical changes to avoid it.

That's what I said earlier on. If I thought the team that played on Saturday would be the one that finished the season I'd could have an educated guess that it wasn't going to be a great season. I'll be amazed though if any more than 4 or 5 players from Saturday are in the side for the final game which is why I feel any predictions either way are based on little more than a gut feeling.

Last season I thought we'd be involved in a relegation fight but survive. I based that on how well we did the season and also how badly we ended it. I don't believe anyone could foresee the absolute car crash that came and how we spiralled out of control. This season I don't really know either way what's going to happen as I don't know what players we will have even by the end of the month. The only thing I will predict with any confidence is the team and set up we had against Birmingham will be vastly different to the one that we finish with in May. If if isn't then I agree we will be in for a long season.

His team selection for the first game was quite concerning tho and suggests he doesn't know the players yet
