What a great idea...

Let's swap two PL has beens with poppadom legs in Tom Davies and Danny Ings for two more PL has beens in Kyle Walker and Kalvin Phillips!

As every other team in the PL and Championship is sprinting towards getting younger, more athletic and putting a premium on being fast, dynamic and physical - we're loading our squad with players like Rothwell and Bamford and us fans are wanting Souttar and Kyle Walker.

This will not end well.

Agree to a point but there’s probably a balance to be struck, without Riedewald and Bamford there’s every chance we’d have gone down.

I do think we need athletes in midfield though so don’t personally fancy bringing Phillips back but wouldn’t be against Walker, depending on the terms. I love Souttar as a player but think the risk is probably too high.

Spoke to Kyles dad this evening, asked him a few questions..

1. Its in Burnleys hands as he's under contract
2. There has been no talks of him leaving Burnley early
3. Wilder and Kyle have kept in contact for the last few years and speak regularly

Nowt we didn't already know basically.
I can t see Burnley allowing him to leave for us personally. He should have signed a deal that allowed him to walk as a free agent upon relegation or only sign a one year deal. Maybe Burnley wouldn't have wanted either and he'd not have signed though. Had Burnley stayed up I think the deal could have happened but much less so now.

And do you think we are going to pay Walker those same high wages? The only way he comes to us is if he accepts a home club discount on wages, question is will he do that? And if he did id play him right CB to talk Seriki through games. A defence of McAllum, new dominant CB (Souttar?) Walker and Seriki would be pretty strong at this level.
I believe we have always inserted a relegation clause on our players contracts unlike others who don't

Its a balance isnt it. Wilder is on record talking about us having one of the youngest teams in the division and needing more experience. Im not against a spine of Souttar, Jairo and Bamford. Gnarly experienced pros who've been there and done it. You then surround them with the likes of Seriki, Tanganga, Brooks, Peck et al who have the legs and athletisism.

Kyle Walker may be in the twilight of his career but he's not in the same bracket as Davies, Ings and Phillips. His top recorded speed this season is 34.8km/h, 1.3km/h off the top 10. He's also among Burnley's highest outfield appearance makers this season in terms of appearances (33/35; 3rd, behind Jaidon Antony and Loum Tchouana), starts (32/35, 1st alongside Estève) and minutes (2,827, outright 1st).

Davies had managed 6 starts and 19 sub appearances in the league for a total of 760 minutes (8.5 full matches) in the two seasons before we signed him. Funnily enough, he's made a similar amount in his three years here.

Ings had made 4 starts and 31 sub appearances in the league for a total of 660 minutes (7.3 full matches) in his two previous seasons.

Phillips had made 17 starts and 14 sub appearances in the league for a total of 1638 minutes (18 full matches) in his two-and-a-half previous seasons. Almost all of that pitch time was at Ipswich in the second half of last season (14+5 apps, 1,240 mins)

Whenever I've seen Kyle this season his legs have gone and his anticipation is a split second below what it used to be.
So only as a cb for me, but there we'd wiser signing Bindon as offers more value for the club, if he comes through.

A fit Phillips is still a cheat code at this level, his best position being sweeper.
Essential Hamer stays as well as his play. His infectious runs on to the defensive clearances, frequently recover possession through opposition goalies panicking- something Peck or Arblaster should have learnt.

Our performances and certainly results when Souttar was in the side were very good and he didn't need speed then and Kyle Walker will still be faster than a lot of younger defenders even next year so maybe just maybe you could be wrong.

dont understand a lot of the negativity towards kyle he walks in to our side just now personally think wilder wants him as rcb and going back to 3 at the back its a no brainer for me as long as kyle fits in with our wage structure

It’s a bit harsh to call Walker a Premier League has‑been. He’s had one rough season at Burnley, but he’s still played 33 games for them. When we signed Davies and Ings, they’d barely played any football at all that was a genuine gamble on fitness. Walker isn’t in that category & he's a much better athlete than all of those.

Rothwell has improved game by game, and Bamford’s record speaks for itself.

You need balance. Both times we’ve been promoted, we’ve had the right mix of youth and experience. At the start of this season and the start of the Premier League season we leaned too heavily on youth, and it showed. The team looked mentally fragile.

Look at the average ages of the sides who have been promoted:

  • Coventry: 26.6
  • Ipswich: 27.9
    vs
  • Sheffield United: 26.4 (and we’ve now released Mee, Ings, Davies which would mean we're at about 25 average age)
Arsenal & City operate around an average age of 25-26 but they're signing the best players in the world.

There’s a clear pattern: successful Championship teams aren’t built on kids alone. They’re built on a spine of players who’ve been there, done it, and can handle the pressure. That’s the balance we’ve been missing since Heckys promotion.

Also those thinking that an ex england international who’s won every domestic cup out there is going to stall Serikis career as opposed to improving it need to give their head a wobble.

Walker will improve Seriki 100%
Big fan of this concept. I think we should get Griezmann in to improve TC7.

Gnarly Bamford ?? 😂
Agree though, need a mix of experience and yoof.

That was a) two years ago and b) one torn Achilles tendon ago ...

You know there are other players out there other than ones who once played for us?

All great points, but there will come a point in Walkers career when his data (and physical prowess) will fall off a cliff. I just don't want that to be us, and with our record of physical conditioning and game mgt, there's every chance that would be on our paycheck.

It would be nice if it happened at United for once, rather than before.
