So the mighty Bristol City and their 10,000 crowds show our game-changing Board what ambition looks like.

Ah, the incalculable wisdom that comes three games into a season.

Another one for the book.

Personally I don't think he is that good ,maybe he knows his level (and Toytowns)

I don't go along with that. Ambition is a statement of what will happen in future, not the past. You could argue quite easily that the Championship is the absolute peak for Rotherham, so why not get out at the top of that particular curve? Can you honestly see them in the Premier League?

I would argue that Bristol City could just about sustain fighting relegation in the Premier League at their own peak. And if he gets a good pay rise out of it too, it's a no-brainer IMO.

Fairy nuff thats your opinion, but they may well have ambitions of getting promoted again, why not? Look at Bournemouth who were sposed to be making up the nos in the relegation zone but are pushing for promotion. I can see any team in the Prem league who has the club run in the right way, keeping good players, buying better players, having a good manager. Look at Swansea, went from almost in the conference to the top flight, why cant any team do it? Maybe youre talking too much about the past as well if you dont think its possible for any well run club :o)

Ah, but in accepting the offer, have Rotherham shown that they are not holding on to their better players?

Lack of time mate. I have to do a couple of hours work today followed by a pressing round of golf. In truth, the book is already on here in instalments. If it was good enough for Charlie Dickens, it's good enough for me.

What, Charlie Dickens got all his ideas off here..???

Actually, now you mention it, it all makes sense...

Bleak House - that's Bramall Lane obviously or it could be where Beighton and Len used to live and where Judge is now lodging.
Great Expectations - Yup, the run up to every transfer deadline.
The Old Curiosity Shop - Once filled with Macron curios and now bedecked with 3-striped knick-knackery.
Hard Times - Hey, isn't it always Kevin.
A Christmas Carol - Starring Kevin McCabe as Scrooge, Neil Warnock as Jacob Marley's ghost and Sheffield United FC as Tiny Tim Cratchit.

Thank heavens Shakespeare never came on here, eh......? ;)

In a word Jon Bon,brilliant:D

He did! Will was a regular at the Lane when Warnock was manager. He was a devotee of tricky wingers and was devastated when their work was wasted by the strikers.

The Bard was thus inspired to write "Ndlovu's Labours Lost".

Aside from the above point about them clearly not holding on to their best players...

It's not that I'm looking at the past in terms of how successful they've been. I'm thinking more about what is sustainable, based on their resources. I'm looking at their fan base for example - Swansea (as in your example) have only got Cardiff to compete with. I suppose that's like United and Wednesday. Then what else is around there? Rotherham have got to compete with two Sheffield clubs, Barnsley, Doncaster... their shiny new ground is still shit - it holds 12,000. That's not a Premier League ground.

Even if Rotherham DO get to the Premier League, do you think they can be a fixture for 20, 30 years? Honestly? I sort of take your point about Swansea, but as well as they have done recently, we still don't even know if that is truly sustainable. It's only what, six years ago since they were in our division? They've done really well and they seem to be well run, but you don't know that they won't get relegated this season. And then who knows. We need to wait a bit longer to see if they are capable of sustaining it for more than a few years. A short burst of success is not really "sustainable" - anyone can buck a trend for a season or two.

Anyway, to bring it back around to the original point... I don't think many will disagree with the idea that Rotherham are not realistically a Premier League club, while Bristol City could just about be.

Doubt they can be a fixture for 20 or 30 yrs no, but then how many clubs can? Bristol City? not realistically.
Support isnt everything. Look at Wigan, they were in the prem for how many yrs with tiny support? Even won the fa cup and got into Europe. They come from a town thats more into Rugby league.

Personally if i was Agard I would have stayed at Rotherham for this season and tried to keep them up. Even if they went down
he's sure to get other offers, even from Bristol City if they go up, seems a bit pointless getting promoted only to "relegate" yourself immediately without giving it a go.

Bristol is a very big city with a very big catchment area. It certainly has the population to sustain PL football.

Relative to its size, Bristol is even more of an underachieving place than Sheffield is in football terms, hard though that may be to believe. The two teams have no trophies and one cup final appearance between them, Rovers are at an all time low and have never been in the top flight, and the last of City's few seasons up there was 1980.

Of course, it takes more than population to get into the PL and stay there. it takes money, guts, luck and good investment.

Thanks for your thoughts mate, I live in Bristol and many folks feel the same. Rovers are my second team so lets no go there :o)

Personally I hope the Blades are back in the Prem long before City, and as a bonus Rovers get back in the league aswell!

With Rovers out of the league there will never be a better time for Bristol City to invest in the team and Ashton Gate, Rovers may never be in the league again so in effect Bristol could become a one club City with a large fan base.

Rovers never in the league again?!! I thought i was pessimistic!

Bristol will never become a one club city, do you think Sheffield would if blades went into the conf?

Sad to say it but Rovers have been struggling for years, no home ground for years and have finally lost their League status. It don't matter who you are, be in decline for long enough and your support will drift away (take note Mr McCabe). I find it amazing that we have held on to our support for so long.

Yep Rovers have been in decline for yrs sadly. No home ground? They were playing in Bath if thats what you mean, but that was yrs ago, they have had their ground for a long time and on the up side they have a new ground that is going to be built in 2015.

Our support is declining at an alarming rate, Wendies as well, we just haven't noticed it too much because attendances have held up quite well.
But the more casual fan that used to say "My favourite team is Sheffield United but I don't go anymore" is a dying breed. These people are important regardless of what some might think because it is a measure of the clubs attraction and pulling power.

When we get to Wembley there is an initial chaotic charge for tickets and then the remaining 10,000 or so get sold off at a nice polite leisurely pace until a week or so before the match, then the casual observer can wander down to Bramall Lane and pick up a couple without too much hassle.

I know that it is kept under control by the loyalty points system but if we were to receive say 50,000 tickets for a Wembley play off final against a club like Crawley they would not get sold.

This is in stark contrast to Millwall and Gillingham who have recently sold over 50,000 for a Wembley play off final. I know it's only up the road for these clubs but the fact is that enough people had an interest in going to support the club. Neither United or Wendy would sell that many because I don't believe that many fans exist any more for either club in spite of maintaining healthy average attendances.

The type of fan you refer to are won over in an instant. Bring us premier league football and Manure and Liverpool fans will be extinct in Sheffield. The average wage will somehow double and hardly anyone will be skint.

The playoff scenario you describe is the phenomenon of a 2 club city where neutrals do not take sides. In gillingham, the entire area gets a nosebleed together for their one opportunity in a lifetime. And it's a bit different when you ask a fan to stump up over 100 quid for their eighth disappointment.

They needed another striker. That signing secures their place in the top 6 at the very least.

1.2 million apparently. Their local journo says it's closer to that than the initial rumour of 400k. So at least 800k. Crazy money for a guy with a year left on his contract, good signing but I'm glad we aren't spending that much on him.

Agard is a great League one player.
