One thing I do find odd is... why was this a deadline day signing? City obviously have no use for him and It was very unlikely anyone in the prem would take the punt after him playing 7 minutes all season & not pulling up any trees in recent loan spells. Could have got this done early Jan and given him more time to get up to speed.

It seems to take us ages to do deals. Probably been working on it since October.
Said same RE Rothwell

Blokes played very little football the last few years, and when he has it has not gone well. Sounds like he's not been injured, but can't imagine he'll be anywhere close to match fit.

Not much to lose besides a bit of money, but I'm fairly confident this won't work out.

I don't totally disagree with you.

However, knowing it'll take something extraordinary for us to realise our outside hopes (5%..?) of finishing 6th, is it a roll of the dice worth taking?
We aren't going to achieve it with typical Championship standard options and Phillips definitely raises the ceiling (but perhaps not the floor..)

If, as I expect, it takes Phillips a little too long to get up to speed and we fall short.. then - if nothing else - it will have lifted our profile a little bit in people's eyes.
Footballers are easily influenced. If we're good enough for KP, maybe we're good enough for one or two others we target in the Summer?

He was outstanding at Leeds but chose the wrong club for his big payday. He’s not the first to go wrong after a move. He’ll also be a brilliant mentor, on and off the pitch for Peck and Blaster. I simply can’t fathom the negativity. Would you naysayers be the same if Sterling came here?
Give him time to get match fit and he could be immense for us.

I still remember when Norwood set foot on the pitch having just signed and it seemed like he just made sense in our team. Everything looked effortless and he immediately made us tick. I’m not saying Phillips will do that. However there’s a lot to be said for just having players in the middle of the pitch with composure, good close control and good passing ability. We got a decent result at Millwall but our build up play mostly relied on long balls in the direction of Tom Cannon. When we tried anything else we usually just put our players under pressure. Arblaster dropping deep made a big difference and I can’t help but think Kalvin Phillips could as well. I don’t care if he’s lost a yard. Norwood was never the quickest. His mind and his technique helped him play at a quick enough pace. Just need to hope Phillips hasn’t lost that.

Let's hope for some link-up like this between Phillips and Bamford (start watching from the 1:10 mark)

My thought is that Hamer will be expected to go flat out for an hour and Rothwell will come on 60-70 mins or be rotated when we have two games in a week
you could be right rothwell did a lot of damage to teams for leeds coming on for the last 25 and it can work the same the other way round with hamer

We've only got 16 matches left. That's 32 central midfield spots. If Riedewald takes one when he's fit, that's 14 taken but he's not going to start 3 in a week straight after injury so call it 12. The remaining 20 will be split between Phillips, Peck and Rothwell. This also has the huge advantage of taking the pressure off Oli Arblaster who's still in the early stages of his comeback from a horrible injury.

The loser in all this is Soumaré which is a bit of a pity as he's the only central midfielder we have whose first instinct is to go forward. All the others turn back and take the safe option (disclaimer: I know nothing of Rothwell).
Tbf Soumare's first instinct is usually to go forward because he's chasing his first touch

What a bizarre signing, maybe the most strange I’ve ever seen us make. I don’t know if I’m buzzing or dissapointed or what!

He played every minute for an England team that reached the final of the Euros… but I was massively against Southgate playing him at the time.

He signed for Man City for £45 million… but I scratched my head that they even considered paying that for him.

Leeds loved him… but I never really ‘got’ it and just thought he was a steady passer surrounded by players way too good for the Championship when they went up.

All those things don’t just happen in football without merit, but I also never actually thought any of those accolades were justified.

It’s the classic Wilder ‘project’ signing going for a big name that’s fallen out of favour but we’ve usually signed them in the Prem and they also usually fail, however, we’re a level lower and he’s the biggest name of the lot… so why has he come here?!

That all sounds like I’m being negative, but I think it’s actually very exciting in such a fucking weird way.
To be fair, that is brilliant!

Good 5 minutes here of Kalvin Phillips chat (from about 36 mins 40 seconds in)...

Interesting comments regarding us being a tight club and run a tight ship, that he stated he would surprised if we would be paying more than £20-£25k pw for him.

Just affirming what we knew already that we a behind times regarding wages and being tight hence why we cant attract premier league players when we was in the Premier league, yes it protects us doing a pigs and or in a situation burnley/Leicester find themselves in but it just means we will struggle to attract the better players and will never really kick on from a yo-yo club (at best).

I think once you have a third successive season in the Prem that's game changing in regards to budgets and salaries you can offer.

'Twas ever thus. But like you say, it has meant we haven't ended up as basket case like so many others who over spent.

Wilder answered this in his post match interview. We enquired early but he waited the month out and came to us after some other interest.
