Championship players do get picked for England but the depth of the squad means it’s not really going to happen often. Criticising an England manager for not picking Championship players is a bit ridiculous.

As for Phillips getting back into the England squad, his recent performances in the Premier League have been so poor that impressing in the Championship isn’t going to help his chances much. If Southgate was still manager he might have a slight chance but I can’t see it happening under Tuchel.

Phillips’ early performances for England were very impressive , particularly his first one .

After that , they went steadily downhill to the point where he often became anonymous and / or prone to making simple mistakes .

Southgate seemed to have a greatly exaggerated opinion as to his ability and positive influence on the team
claiming after one shabby England performance that this was due almost entirely to him not being on the pitch , which was complete nonsense .

I sincerely hope that he can perform for us in the way that he did in his early years in which case it would be a brilliant signing but am far from sure that this will be the case .

I’m of the opinion that dropping down to the Championship and playing in a decent team should allow him to play his best football again. But that could’ve also been the case with Ben Godfrey and we all know how that turned out!

I think IF (big big if) we get 6th this year, the Play Offs will be looked at completely differently. We won't be expected to win them, it'll be a free hit and an extension of our season.
