I was the 'lucky' mascot that night. Paul Williams promised the other mascot (RIP Tim) a hat trick. My first of many heartbreaks as a Blade.

1892/3 season Accrington Stanley 0 Blades 1 at Trent Bridge. It was known as a test match not a play off in those days. It was the first season of the Second division, now Championship.

We had been told we'd be put into the top division after applying to join the league. Pigs were automatically put into the top one and we went into the second. Rumour has it the Pig representatives at the FA were concerned that we would take the limelight away from them so engineered us being put in the lower division. They argued they were the bigger and better club. We achieved our position in the top flight through merit finishing second in the lower division and winning the play off. Not through an old boys network and possible back handers.

We made the view that they were bigger and better look foolish as we won 2 FA cups, 1 league title and 1 GB cup win over the next 10 years compared to their one solitary FA Cup win in 1895. We won the title before they did. In those 10 years we were at our peak being one of the top clubs in the country along with Villa, Blackburn and Sunderland finishing runners up in the league and cup also.

So to lift the curse of the play offs I recommend we all refer to them as Test matches :).
 
We didn't know it at the time, but getting relegated was probably a blessing as Bassett cleared the decks and then brought in a new squad and some of those would benefit from a year at the lower level to develop, rather than have to break into a team in the second division. I'm thinking Deane and Bryson would particularly benefit from that extra year. We won most matches and then got promoted of course behind Wolves.

Play off heartbreaks ? Pah!

Imagine what it was like for a 9 year old in 1950 to wait anxiously for the Green ‘Un to arrive and find out that , by securing a 0-0 draw against the champions Spurs , the Pigs had beaten us to promotion to the First Division by 0.008 on goal average .

A couple of certainties with the Blades.

1) We are champions at snatching relegation from the jaws of survival (see 1981, 1994, 2007, probably more)
2) When we qualify for the Play Offs, a kick in the bollocks always follows (see 1988, 1997, 2003, 2009, 2012, 2013)

Add in 1968 needed to beat Chelsea on last day of season at Home lost 1-2. Not helped by the fact only recently it has come to light from an ex Southampton player that they were bribed by the Coventry chairman to play out a 0-0 draw that kept the SISU club up after being in the relegation places all season. Another reason to dislike that Club.

We also love conceding a late goal that shatters our hopes as this season has illustrated. 1997 Play off Hopkins scores winner for Palarse with11 seconds of the game left. Chelsea 1994 the goal that sends us down is conceded with 17 seconds to go.
 
I've got a weird feeling we are gonna be 3-0 down after about 25 minutes and it fall straight on its face.

Then we get one back and then another in the 2nd half and a late dramatic equaliser and that doesn't end up being enough.
