Will he get some stick when he is back at BDTBL on October 13th?

"You thought you were Prem, you were wrong, you were wrong."

Probably warming the bench or getting a mysterious muscle strain for that one eh, Jordan?

"Do you need a cushion for your arse? Doooooo you neeeed a-a cushion for your aaaarse?

Jordan Mellis and Jacob Slew - went for the money and ended up pooh

Another money chasing player.

If he had stayed last season he may have scored 15+ goals and then rightly so got a move to the big time ala Matt Lowton, who by the way has featured in all but one of Villa's pre-season games (i believe)!!

Absolutely right Matt
The Villa fans I know here in the Midlands are very impressed with him and have been comparing him with Kyle Walker - although I have had to temper their expectations a little on that front.
Lowton will be a big hit at Villa this season - and he deserves to be. I wish him all the best.

I think Matt's a terrific player, but fear for him when Premiership wingers run at him.

Maybe Paul Lambert will be able to teach him better positioning in defence.

He'll thrive in a Lambert team, his method of defending is pretty much just to attack with the full backs joining in, you can score 2 but we'll try score 3 kind of attitude. I hope he does well, great player.

I would hope absolutely not. Not all the details of the transfer have beenr eleased, but look at a few facts:

1. he signed a new contract before we sold him
2. he was sold, never asked to leave
3. when a prem club comes calling would you turn it down?
4. We know he rejected a move to the pigs on loan out of respect to his boyhood club/ previous employers.

For me, he will getting nothing but a positive reception, and I expect the same from the other 14 people that will be turning up to Bramall Lane this season

Unless you know this first hand (do you?) then let's look at some other "facts"
Mark Rankine is his agent and appears to be a greedy little fooker that gave the lad some dodgy career advice so he could get a slice of a deal.

Other answers
3. Yes, if all you are going to do is get splinters in your arse when you could be racking up appearances and goals in a first team, whilst still so young.
4. You might but I am not privvy to that - Are you saying this is the case?

The poster of this thread has elevated Slew to some level neither I or any one else has ever seen him achieve

Hes a young lad who has achieved ,,,, well nothing as yet

How is that? The OP just states that Oldham have signed a ex-blade. Nothing about elevating him to another level.

Cant understand the hate TBH.
He got a good wedge, we got (probably) more than he was worth.
Yeah it was upsetting at the time, but i suppose he fancied a crack at the PL. Who wouldnt?

Wasn't aware that Slew had kids & family to cater for - fair play - not sure that a development contract at Blackburn will actually set him up for life, though - because that is what you are inferring.
What you are failing to grasp is that going for the wonga too early actually hampers your earnings potential.
Contrast the situation with Harry Maguire, who stayed and had a full season of first team action under his belt. If he stays this season he will get another and if he improves again then he could be on for a move for even bigger money or improve his existing contract at SUFC. Slew could go the way of Mellis and end up a bit part player at the age of 23-24 instead of a promising and improving youngster at 18-19 learing his trade and then getting his big move. Nobody appears to want to work at something these days - if you are good enough and apply yourself properly (barring injury) you will get the rewards further down the line. Longevity of career is the key to getting set up for life - not a flash in the pan, couple of years and then off to Oldham on loan.

On the first point - that's why I put "facts" in quotation marks - I was inferring from the bollocks I have read on the likes of this forum about Mark Rankine. Nah, but we all know that agents are all sweetness and light, so who am I kidding?

It was a shockingly bad deal all round.
Blackburn spent £1m on a player who didn't contribute as they were relegated.
Slew hardly played and lost the chance of a starring role in his hometown club's promotion.
United missed out on promotion and ended up spending most of the money we received trying to plug the gap left with the likes of Beattie, Hoskins and O Halloran.
Everyone's a loser.

If we really had to sell him (and the official website stated it was the club's decision not Slew's), then we should at least have loaned him back for the rest of the season. We'd have got the money AND his services, Slew and Blackburn would have benefitted enormously.
Everyone's a winner.

A partnership of Evans and Slew, for me, wouldn't have done much.
You'd have wanted Slew to partner Cresswell, to compliment him well....

I'm happy he didn't come back on loan.

Evans wasn’t available all season though was he?
Slew contributed more in the first four matches than his replacements Beattie, Hoskins and O Halloran did between them in the rest of the season.
Even on the bench, he would have given us the pacy option which Wilson has admitted we were lacking last season.
If we’d had Slew in the squad we wouldn’t have been scrabbling around choosing between different, unsuccessful strikers in the last few matches.
We wouldn’t have had to abandon our successful 4-4-2 and play 4-5-1 with Quinn as a deep-lying striker in the play-offs.
I think he would have made the difference and helped to get us the extra points or goal we needed. Who knows? But the alternatives certainly didn’t.

When we sold Slew, he had started 8 league games. At the time we sold him, Kyle Walker had started 2 league games, and 3 playoff games. Going for the wonga even earlier hasn't appeared to do him much harm.

Some of the hate towards the guy in this thread is quite unbelievable frankly. He isn't a hero - he's even less a hate figure. Certainly wouldn't boo the guy just because he had the audacity to move from League 1 team to a Premiership club where, in theory at least, he had a reasonable shot at the first team (given Blackburn's poorness).

Nobody should be surprised to see a teenager agree to join a Premiership club from a third division club. It hasn't quite worked out for him and he's now trying to resurrect his career. Good luck to him.

He runs 100 meters in 11.2 seconds apparantly. What's the record for a footballer?

I'm happy with your points you have given, however, for me it was because we didn't get adequate cover in, which we should have.

Crewe Alexandra did the right thing when they sold Powell, they said they didn't want to loan him back so they could get on with what they needed to.

I wonder if any of the young players sold ever got much choice in whether to stay or go for the mega bucks, maybe it went more like we need the money so sorry you have to go to whoever offers the most cash. I certainly could think of better places to go than a Lancashire mill town.

Footballer or professional footballer? This bloke might just win the former...

No hate being portrayed here and I don't see it as anything else except a bit of mickey taking. No one has stated they are going to boo him, have they? Probably just ignore him. From what I understood at the time Slew refused to sign a contract for ages and there were also rumours around that he wanted to leave. Whether that was a tactic or not to get a better deal from Utd, he signed a two year deal, which he appeared to do so reluctantly from where I am sitting.

Kyle Walker didn't appear to have any contract dispute and despite the limited number of games he played for the first team it was plain for all to see that he was something special. Also with Kyle W I am sure that he would have stayed if no offer came in. His interaction and public statements after leaving are all pro SUFC as a club so he has is seen as having a greater affinity for the Blades than Slew or Mellis ever showed. It was the failure to reach the Prem in the play offs that made the sale of the two Kyles a cert.

Whether Slew would have been retained if say Monty or Quinn were sold at the beginning of last season we cannot tell. It just appears that he jumped sooner rather than later.

Jacob Mellis was quite overt in his deisre to get away to a big time Prem club and slagging off SUFC to the bargain.

The point re: attidudes towards Slew wasn't aimed at you - the booing was taken as an obvious extention of those opinions.

You can't really compare like for like, but what I was particularly picking up on was the 'leaving too early' charge, when basically others left early (like Walker) and did very well. And have also avoided the wrath of fans, no doubt because Walker returned to the club - initially at least. I would like to think Walker would have acted differently to Slew had he been in Slew's position (dropping into League 1), but we can't really say that he definitely would have done.
