Dignified, decent, a football man through and through, his teams mirrored his character.
We were relegated in 1968 and nowadays that would have been the death-knell for his career at Bramall Lane. But after a brief move "upstairs" he was brought back and he built a great team.
It was shameful that he finished his football career with Wednesday, shameful that a role couldn't be found for him with United.

Gentleman John built the great 70s team on no money everybody wondered who bill dearden was whe he signed him from Chester we soon found out ten Bob bill as he was affectionaly known
