John Fleck

Feel for him personally, but it just makes the decision to extend his deal an even poorer one. Yes, we couldn't have foreseen him breaking his leg, but as others have said, he's had a poor injury and fitness record for 3 years now and has contributed little during that time.

On the plus side, it might mean one of the young ones gets a chance to shine and takes it.

The decision to renew his contract was shocking at the time as many people on here said, he was fat and unfit last season, what on earth made people at the club think this would change?
I'm afraid this one is all on Hecky, I'm sure the club wanted to say bye bye, but Hecky persuaded them otherwise.
It always looked a stupid decision that's now gone wrong in record time.

How have they only just realised its a leg break, and why is it only "suspected"?

FFS - has he been walking around on it for a week?
I walked around for 3 weeks with a broken hip as the xray didn't show a break. I knew it was broken and eventually paid for an MRI scan which showed the break. Things happen.
Ps The hospital refunded me the £400 odd for the MRI scan, obviously worried about me making a fuss.
Having said that, you would expect footballers to have better treatment than little old me.

Sometimes with the swelling it takes time to be able to have a real picture. I think the writing was on the wall when it happened though. He knew unfortunately.

Probably a refracture. Or the fracture never fully healed the first time. Less energy / force required with the second injury. Not that unusual unfortunately.

I'd be surprised if that was the truth considering Hecky wanted Billy to stay but the board wouldn't offer the contract.
Hecky wanted to keep the whole group together but the board apparently played eenie meenie miney moe and we ended up with Fleck.

Same leg isn’t it? Same place?

No idea. But presumably there are protocols / usual practices / time to heal stats that are followed with a break. Once they're observed, it's a matter of getting fitness back and playing. Otherwise, presumably, if a club/player waits until the break is 'fully healed' it'd be a much longer recovers time. I dunno, I'm in no way a medical expert, but common sense suggest it's a matter of risk management. This time it back fired.

FWIW, I'm not defending the clubs decision to give Fleck a new contract. I think his time was done after the last relegation, but we are where we are and that decision should have no effect on the judgment of this current injury.

Gotta admit I've tried my best to be optimistic regarding the squad but this (even though he's past his best) is a big blow unless we get bodies in asap. Poor Hecky must be pulling his hair out.

How many fit CM's do we have left?

Norwood (May not be fit for Palace), Berge, Osborn, Slimane and a couple of the young lads 😵‍💫

We get what we deserve for handing out sentimental 'rewards' contracts. We have to get out of the habit and move the fuck on

Hecky's insecurity in not wanting to lose any of the good old senior lads is largely to blame it seems
More likely, hecky knew it was just another player he had to bring in.

4 quality and exciting players in and more to follow. Broken ????
9 days to the start of the season and we have virtually no fit forwards and a threadbare midfield.
We were promoted over 3 months ago and our own manager freely admits we are well short.
To top it off a player we bizarrely gave another year to (particularly when Sharp was a far better option not least for a strong voice in a dressing room that's going to badly need one) is going to be a waste of a shirt.
Definitely broken.

You are impatiently looking short term.
This is the chance to create another young, fit and exciting squad. Throwing that chance away by rushed signings would be madness.
This is an 18 month rebuilding job, which might involve relegation, but should give us a team to remember.

Billy is superfit, rarely injured, always gives 100%. Could still do a job. No contract.

Fleck is injured a lot, he's been awful for 3 years, rarely appears to put any effort in. Gets an extension.

Make it make sense.

We already had 6 forwards ahead of Sharp, whereas Fleck would probably have started against Palace as we have the square root of fuck all in terms of midfield.

Even in writing that, i realise how weak we are in centre mid. Norwood and Berge were treading water in the Championship by the end of last season, so God only knows how much of a dry bumming they're going to get in the PL....

Rushed signings? We were promoted more than 3 months ago and looked like making it before that. We knew two of the key players weren't ours and we'd need replacements.
We messed up the contractual management of our best young player and find ourselves with a weaker team than the one that went up.
We also have numerous players whose contracts are running out.
If this is planning for the future not convinced it's going to end the way you believe it will.

Let’s revisit in Feb 24 and again in September 24.

Shame for him personally but if he wasn't finished before, he is now.

We're skint as it is and the club were first paying a bloke who would only play in an emergency and now we're paying him to definitely not play when that money could have gone towards someone else.

All while having young lads who could do a better job than he can muster who could step in half a dozen times a season if we need.

Yet more madness. Prince needs to get sold up ASAP.

I was under the impression the areaof the break is usually stronger than before if the break heals properly. Blow to Fleck and us will it need pinning to give it strong now its happened again? Whoever is knowledgeable on these things.

This Summer should've been about clearing out all of the deadwood and all of the players with a year left on their deals that looked unlikely to sign.

A total rebuild, looking towards a promotion campaign in 2024/25. Sign the best of the Championship, treat this season as a free hit and see where it takes us.

Instead, we're a shambles.
I sympathise with PH to an extent as he probably felt with such limited resources he might as well retain the old guard to limit the number of bodies he had to bring in on a shoestring.
But even still, keeping Fleck on was an appalling decision. He's been poor for 3 seasons (so was Stevens who he wanted to keep).
