We needed a big bastard in defence from. Last season we bought him slow looks uninterested sloppy on the ball not commanding average looks Complete waste of money so far

Defence should be
Freeman, stearman, Egan, O’Connell

Then two of
Lundstram, Evans, basham, Leonard ( these four are currently all we have for these positions)

Then
Fleck, Duffy, woodburn

Then
Sharp or mcgoldrick

If we're interested in Jake Cooper for £3m+ as reports suggest, then why didn't we just sign him instead of Egan?

That would've at least given us some real height.

As we are, we have no real height, in addition to no pace.

Wilder reads your scouting reports Herbert.

John Egan - £2.5m. Solid CB at a good age with his best years ahead of him who would cover the CB and RCB positions. It would complete our defence and strengthen our starting line up.

£2.5m is the key bit there. That was the most I'd want us to pay. He would've been a decent signing at that.

I've not said he's a bad player or that he'll be a bad signing. It's the fee that grates on me, and I think we could've got more for that money.

It's only 2 games. I think he will eventually be a solid defender as that what he has been all his career.

He will look fine when he has had time to get to know his teammates and when the alarm clock finally kicks in with CW that we cant get away with playing three at the back anymore.

I'd go with a 4-3-2-1 formation.
Henderson, Baldock (RB), Egan (RCB),
Stearman (LCB), O'Connell (LB), Freeman (RM), Fleck (CM), Bryan (LM), Duffy and Woodburn as the AM's, and Billy up top.

Not a chance in hell that we will go with that though (formation or team) after all we always need to shoehorn Clarke, Stevens, Basham, Evans, and Lundy into the team no matter what. And as for playing with 4 at the back....oh well...sigh.

Looks lost playing in a back 3 to me.
I would change to a back 4 for Saturday and see how we go from there.
For what it’s worth, my back 4 would be;
RB Freeman
CB Egan
CB Stearman
LB JO’C

We would look a damned sight more solid at the back if we did.

He was very poor tonight and not a great deal better Saturday and at present doesn’t breed the confidence into the rest of the defence Stearman does, however he only played a couple of pre season games so needs time to settle in. Fingers crossed it’s quickly both for the team and himself

Indeed. We are soft as shit at the minute and it needs sorting out ASAP.
Duffy also has to start because he enables us to retain the ball in the oppositions half and actually be positive with it.

Not starting with Duffy is just bloody ridiculous. It reminds me of when Porterfield dropped Edwards for the donkey that was Peter Withe and almost got himself the sack because of his own stubbornness before he finally relented and saw Edwards come back and get a hatful.

Hopefully CW will have a ponder, come to his senses and change the formation and team.

Strangely enough I'm not totally disillusioned tonight as I think we have the personnel to make us a fairly decent team - he just needs to find it and get the right formation picked. Clue - Evans and Lundy....it's a big no no, Stevens...dropped.

Egan will be ok
Stevens ,Lundstram and Evans mid table L1 tops fucking garbage
My point exactly.. blame the new signing yet we have 2 absolute donkeys up front and more in the squad and central midfield that’s league one quality at best! But if wilder car see that then we have no hope.. stubborn as he is he won’t change fuck all

*cant ... and not to mention he still persists in leaving Duffy on the bench

This aged well.

That QPR game was the turning point in my mind. I think he learned a lot from Stearman in how to control a back 3 by being part of it but on the right, he's looked solid as a rock ever since.
Or perhaps he's got used to playing with the players around him now

Middle of the back 3 is a very specialist position, I think it's more the former to be honest. Seeing first hand how to control a 3 in a match situation must have been invaluable.

Of course he'll now be more used to his team mates - that goes without saying.

It is and i don't doubt that it took a little adjustment, I've played in both a back 3 and a back 4 myself, however i don't believe that it was down to Stearman showing him what to do.

Hardest that i found to adjust to was when i was playing for a team in the Netherlands and playing in a back 4 with a sweeper behind me. I was man marking the central striker, so when the striker dropped off into midfield i went with him. Seemed odd to be playing so far forward

You think you've got a player settled in the right position to be a capable scapegoat for years to come, and then the coaching staff get their hands on him and spoil things. This never used to happen in the 80's and 90's.

Bloody CW and AK brought in a new lad from Fulham/Brighton, but he has proved too good to be a scapegoat. Worse than that, he has displaced regular scapegoat Lunny, from the team.

Of the reliable remaining scapegoats, Billy really should have really taken more stick as we were recently told 'his legs have gone'. Well, the fat lad from Sheffield has only gone and bloody scored 7 goals in 11 games, taking himself well out of scapegoat territory.

The only remaining nailed on scapegoat is Leon, who can't currently buy a goal. All our hopes rest on your shoulders Leon....

Owd Edna isn’t doing himself any favours either. He was ‘League one at best’ last season FFS.

Im sure we could all dig up opinions that went awry - I mean some on here were staunch backers of Weir/Adkins and Clough ....
