Hi, can anyone tell me anything about John Docherty's time at Sheffield United? He was signed from Brentford in 1961 but didn't play that many games during a five year stay.

Did he play in the FA Cup semi final?
What was his best season, games wise?

Does anybody know or remember anything about his stay?

I'm writing an article about him and any info would be useful. Thanks

My dad spoke about him before, said he was a bit of a 'Boo boy' for the crowd. I'll ask him if he remembers owt else.

I quite liked Docherty, but he was only ever understudy to Len Allchurch and as Walthamstow alludes to, a bit of a target for unfair crowd abuse.
Similar in style to Allchurch, but not as effective.
Had more success in management possibly...

The semi final and SF final replay programmes list Billy Hodgson on the right and Ronnie Simpson on the left, whatever that's worth. United signed Len Allchurch at the same time but he was cup tied but played an important part in the promotion run in, runners up to Alf Ramsey's Ipswich.

Didnt play in the FA Cup semi in 1961.

Played in 41 league matches scoring 9 goals between 1961 and 1966. His debut was in the 0-0 draw at Brighton in March 1961 (his only 1st team game of the season). His next two games were in April 1962 (scored twice in the 4-2 win at Blackpool), played in 3 league matches in 1962-63, 13 league matches scoring 4 goals in 1963-64, Allchurch got injured in the 2nd match of the 1964-65 season and Docherty kept the number 7 shirt for 10 successive games, scoring once, (including a League Cup match) before Harris decided to give Woodward his debut at Liverpool on 7th October. Docherty played only 1 more game that season, in February, wearing the number 11 shirt. Tony Wagstaff had the number 7 shirt for the first 3 games of the 1965-66 season before Docherty got the shirt back playing in 13 successive games, scoring twice and was dropped after the 2-1 home defeat to Tommy Docherty's Chelsea ( despite scoring with a penalty)

My favourite story that I heard about him was the United stalwart and former Club Captain Cec Coldwell telling him to put his cigarette out at half-time in a reserve match that they were both playing in !

Only thing I remember about him : he was an excellent penalty taker ,he had this style where he stroked the ball with no real power but deadly accuracy just inside the post.He played in a fair number of reserve games and most pens were at reserve level.
He went into management after retirement but no idea where he ended up,maybe silent can shed some light on that ?.

He had five spells at Brentford, three as a player, one as manager and one as assistant manager. He also was the manager who took Millwall up into the old First Division and had a spell at Bradford City too. He's 78 now.

I came to Sheffield in August 1965 and started watching United straightaway. John Doherty played on the wings. I never saw him take a penalty but I remember hearing at the time that he was a good penalty taker.

After leaving United he played for Brentford and at a later date was their manager for a few years. I don't recall him managing any other club
in England but he could have gone back to Scotland and managed there.

I remember him as Millwall manager in my Football '89 sticker book.

Always seemed to look confused, as though he didn't quite follow what was going on. Had ability but not much game sense as I recall.
