He's having to pack a lot in to a pretty small acreage of print. And he's having to address readers than aren't going to know the ins and outs or the context.
Eight paragraphs outlining the history of the case (which is an impressive feat in itself). The remaining six on this season and the event itself. Seems fine to me.
And rather than just addressing your only relevant criteria of "is he good enough for the championship?", he's made his point about whether or not Evans'll be good enough for United's purposes (as well as the other ground he covers).
I'm not suggesting that he's some sort of journalistic god, just that he's written a very decent article here, that covers a lot of ground and is suggestively opinionated. And, fortunate for me, it just happens that I share one or two of the concerns he's alluded to.
