⬆️ this

After the first few games the opposition obviously watched videos of previous games & saw how dangerous he is. So they started putting 2 or 3 defenders on him whenever he got the ball. Therefore he doesn't skip past them like he was doing. However this does create more space for us & guess what.... we're top of the league 😏
His impact is not so good to watch now & the whingers are now saying 'send him back to palace' 🙄 but he's an important part of this great team without a doubt.
He is also capable with both feet, not just a left footer, watch a highlights YouTube of him.
This, same as Saka for Arsenal- he often draws 2 or 3 to him creating space both outside and in the channels

I wouldn't send him back.
But there are frustrating aspects to how he plays , some of which might not be his own fault because we don't know if he's following instructions from CW.

He rarely does anything with the ball other than turn inside onto his L foot and get closed by 2 defenders.
He should occasionally try the outside so that defenders can't predict what he'll do.

Passes to him are of the type such that he is static and once received there is always at least one defender for him to beat.
This is the fault of the passer in our "safe" style of approach.
He has pace , so we should play some passes which turn the defender , for JRS to run onto , which would see him getting immediately behind his marker.

Another way of making life harder for opposition defenders is for him & Hamer occasionally to swap wings during the game.
It was a cross by Hamer from the RW which assisted the goal at the Den. And JRS would probably get more joy out of his L foot with occasionally being on the L.

We are doing extremely well as a team.
I think that's partly because we have 2 midfielders who can defend in front of the traditional back 4 - meaning we've conceded so few goals.
We also have 2 more central midfielders (Hamer & O'Hare) ahead of them which helps our possession.
We "pay" for that by having only 1 striker and 1 genuine winger.

That genuine winger tends to be JRS.
I think we could make better use of him by doing the things suggested above.

The opposition defenders would never know which side he is arriving and whether he's going outside or cutting inside.

But overall , our use of JRS is just a tiny frustration in what has so far been a tremendously successful formation.

I think he’s talented and our second most dangerous player behind Hamer.

We’re top of the league and flying so this isn’t a criticism of the team or the set up just my interpretation of why he’s sometimes ineffective.

We’ve got a bit of an in-balance in the team because Hamer is shoe horned in on the left and OHare is unstoppable at the moment for his incredible work rate.

Hamer demands the ball, he looks for it and he plays an almost free roll wandering in off the left, getting close to Ohare. Burrows is always looking to bomb down the left and get involved. It’s a read headache to mark as opponents never really know where Hamer and Ohare are going to go end up and Burrows often finds space due to wingers not being the best at tracking him back.

Compare this to the other side of the pitch. We’ve got JRS who was on the radar of most clubs in the division in the summer. Meaning everyone’s scouted him. He’s playing ahead of Gilchrist. Who’s a centre half playing at right back. I think he’s ace, a proper Sheffield United player full of blood and guts but he’s a stay at home right back. He prefers to slot into a 3 when burrows bombs on than go forward himself.

This means that JRS is usually marked by their left back and their left sided winger / midfielder can step back in and doesn’t really have to worry about Gilchrist overlapping and leaving them exposed. JRS has found more space on the odd occasions he’s found himself on the pitch with Seriki, because he’s more willing to wander forward.

JRS is often doubled up on, getting the ball with his back to goal isolated by the touch line.

Yes he does need to learn to adapt and impose himself on games a little more but he’s also the victim of his own reputation and our system favoring left sided overloads.

Do sometimes wonder if we would look good in the Man City style 3241 formation with an extra body supporting JRS but that’s a lot riskier.

Gilchrist being a stay at home right back has probably cost us a few in the goals for column but saved us a few in the goals against column.

Were top of the league tho and everyone of the lads is doing his bit.

There’s some miserable sods on this thread!
JRS is class! He’s a young lad making his way in the game. He’s not going to turn in a match winning performance every week!

He is talented but has a lot to learn: hence the loan.
Many of the suggestions above are valid and sensible, that doesn’t make them miserable nor sodomists !!

I can’t agree… for valid and sensible replace that with groundless and irrational!
A month ago he was named in the EFL team of the week. He’s single handedly won us at least 2 games. And now after a dip in form, folk are calling for his head! It’s incredibly fickle!!
I just hope none of the players ever see their name as a title to a thread and open the damn thing up!

I don’t see many being that negative about him. I certainly am not, but the suggestions as to how he could improve seem valid, both for him and the team.
He cannot be expected to produce moments of magic when he is double marked and often receives the ball facing away from goal. That is often not his fault but it does create space elsewhere, which benefits the team, but gives the impression that he is not performing when there is little else he can do.
Swapping wings and going outside defenders occasionally seem to me to me valid additions to his repertoire.

Yes those suggestions you’ve mentioned are valid and can be talked about in sensible discussions 👍

He has gone off the boil a bit but is a genuine match-winner. In the style of football we play, we need someone who can get a goal out of absolutely nothing. he is one of 2 or 3 that can. He will come good again.

Do we know what he's out with? Doesn't seem to get mentioned unlike other players. If it is a hamstring, his only major injury at Palace was a hamstring and he was out for half a season!

Wilders post match said expecting Jes back for Norwich.

Its been a recurring tight hamstring, so not pulled it or torn in.. simply taking precaution.

Did i read correctly that someone (wilder?) was quoted as saying it was similar to Souza and both will be back for Watford

If he's back available I wouldn't mind us trying Brookes and JRS on the wings and move Hamer into the middle with Davies (until Vini is back).

We can do both
Only if he put Brooke’s back to left MF with JRS on the right. So who would we drop? If BBD is coming in plus Hamer and COH I can’t see a place for him. Heard he’s already getting unsettled and wanting away. He will not have gone unnoticed to scouts, he’s already looking like an accomplished player withe a big future. Whereas CP have sent JRS to us to make a decision on him like others have ie Coffie and a woodburn, both duds eventually

Jesurun Rak-Sakyi may return to Crystal Palace for treatment on his hamstring injury. The Blades' injury list is forcing them to be active in the market and Peterborough United winger Kwame Poku is a player who is admired at Bramall Lane.
