He knows what he can do and think's he'll be a good addition as COVER for Harris/defence.
It's an uninspiring signing but is very solid backup. There is though a much bigger issue in that we have a couple of other positions who we still need first choice bloody players for.
Alcock, whose primary position is right back, can cover left back, but at the moment he's covering central defence. Meanwhile, we have an aging midfielder who (despite a good performance in the League Cup) is covering right back... and has now played 180 minutes the last week. Not to mention that our most experienced (and presumably most 'solid') central defenders were given a run around by a team in the league below us on Saturday.
Quality back-up is a wonderful luxury to be able to afford. But it shouldn't be the priority at the moment - especially when bringing in first choice players will free up other players to move into their best roles.
Good post s5Blade,the only qualm iv'e got is Cloughy saying he's back up(cover).I think a manager should never say this as it means players like Harris take their foot of the peddle and relax knowing he is first choice.Cloughy should have said somewhere along the lines of Jay has come in to challenge Bob for the left back spot but if needed can play centre back also.So we have signed a player who is only 29, as cover, for full back and CB who has nearly 50 premiership games, 150 games in the league above us and 60 in this division (in a team who have finished top 8 the last 2 seasons) for free..... as cover, and people are not happy with this?
Who should we be signing as backup for bob and co? Bale? Evra? That lad from Everton, Baines is it? He has experience at this level and above, will fill in where needs be. Why the big hoo har? Dont think he will be the last of our business in this window, he has been signed as back up, relax, as Swizzler says, Promotion is sorted. These are just signings to provide talking pointsClough is probably just a bit bored.

I think this is precisely the problem though and becoming an all too familiar sentence regarding our summer transfer business.
Our first team needs addressing, we don't need anymore cover. With our supposed new-found wealth/the Harry money/the cup run money we should have been able to bring in the talent necessary to make ourselves the comfortable favourites for promotion yet all we seem to have done so far is bring in a load of journeymen/average League One/'backup' players in the hope that our (admittedly very good) manager will get the best out of them and lead us to promotion. It just seems like we're taking such big gambles on inconsistent players like Harris, Howard, Flynn, Doyle, and even Murphy performing consistently at their best whilst bringing in players who may or may not turn out to be decent to cover them. A 5th season down here is not an option which is why people are becoming concerned about our transfer dealings and apparent lack of interest in improving the first team.
I'll reserve full judgement until the window has shut but given the sort of statements the club were making regarding the investment and the talk surrounding certain high profile players coming here, you really can't blame people for being slightly disillusioned with both this transfer and our overall business during the summer.
Think some people need to calm down. Clough has said repeatedly he needed another defensive player for cover? Not a bad cover player played quite a few times for Swindon or are not the worst team in the league.
What would you say if that £2.5M was closer to £4.5M including add ons etc or maybe £750,000 via a tribunal?
Undisclosed fees are stupid and anyone who thinks they prevent teams from learning what was paid for a player are naive.
More than 2 and a half million. Doubt it.Not true, we would have got a substantial amount set by tribunal.
Anyways I for one am refusing to jump on the bandwagon of slagging players off who iv not seen play in a blades shirt. Without Clough and his team last season we would have been in a relegation dog fight all season, but with his GOOD signings and tactics he saved us. No point in crying over spilt milk wishing we had Brayford and Coady, we ant got em just need to get behind this team and focus on the players we have which isn't a bad bunch at all.So we will buy players who are not available for a good price and may not even make a difference. How longs Harry been gone? 10 days - 2 weeks? If the players are not available to buy then we can't buy them not his fault is it. Not going to spend a million on left back cover when we already have one of the best left backs in the league.
Well, the squad is unarguably stronger than last year. This will be worth plenty of points in the long run.
I would say it is arguable. Look at what we have compared to what we had. How much better are:
McEverley than Hill
Magahey than Maguire
Alcock than Brayford AND Freeman
Campbell Ryce than Brandy
McNulty than Taylor
Basham and thingy that's injured than Coady?
Not an awful lot, if at all, I wouldn't say.
As for it being worth plenty of points, basically you're suggesting we are waiting for everybody to pick up injuries or suspensions because they must have below average replacements, whereas we don't? We don't have back up that can change a game. All the new signings are just "steady".
On paper I think we have an average League 1 squad. The only stand outs, Murphy, Baxter and Scougall, were all here last season, as were Maguire and Brayford (I won't include Coady because he wasn't a particularly stand out player, although he is probably better than his replacements, one of which is yet to feature in a competitive game due to injury).
We've signed plenty of back up so far, but we are still waiting for any signings that make you think "he's a definite starter, I can't wait to see him play." My fear is that nobody like this is on their way to us and we are left with a squad of average League 1 performers and very little to set us apart from the rest. The only one that comes remotely close is Higdon who looks a decent signing. Although a 31 year old whose best years were in Scotland doesn't really strike you as the one to make the difference between promotion or failure.
Again, it is only my view, I would rather us have signed some definite starters, real quality players, and run the risk of using the youth players as back up. I've been shouted down before for saying that it is the eleven on the pitch that make the difference. Well, I stand by the view that I would rather have a strong core first eleven and use youngsters as back up as and when required, than have a slightly larger squad of average players offering very little to make the difference.
I don't think many are questioning if Clough is making the most out of what he's got, more that what he's been given isn't enough.Living this far away from the action, I rely on the opinions of those who are kind enough to post information and match reports about all things Blades related. I hope to catch a few televised games but they will show only part of what's going on.
Similarly I believe that most members of this forum are disadvantaged when it comes to judging players from elsewhere.
Nigel Clough however is in a position to evaluate a player, see what we cannot and make an informed decision concerning team building.
Unfortunately some of the recent posts reflect a lack of confidence in our manager. I find this strange after what he achieved last season.
I trust his judgement. One named player is much the same as another to me , we may disagree over team selections but. I do hope that. Nigel and the team get our full support, whoever wears the shirt.
