OR. Clough is a vastly experienced football manager with an intimate knowledge of the squad at his disposal and a clear idea of where and how it needs improving/re-inforcing. He is aware that other areas of the pitch also need addressing and has several targets from the Premier League and Championship lined up, but feels the loan market will offer better quality and value for money.
Perhaps you are right, but if it's really the case that this is what he wants, and not all that he can get, then we can throw the "in Nigel we trust" bollocks out of the window if we don't get promoted, and start the search for a new manager.

If it isn't, as I strongly suspect, we should give him the keys to the city if he gets us promoted.

UTB

The tribunal would set it at about that level. However, Harry had discarded the sunscreen and was demanding the move.

£2.5m now or keep a wantaway for 12 months and then get £2.5m?

If it is exactly the same money it is a no brainer. Keep him.

And if he cries about it? Someone should gently point out to him and his pesky agent that behaviour like that does not exactly make him an appealing signing to another club.

Demanding the move. Contract contract contract. Why is this so fucking difficult?

Because modern football has handed all the power to the players. Blame Jimmy Hill

I was expecting the majority of new signings to be aged around 20 with potential to improve and move up the divisions with us, sadly the summer signings have mostly been players a bit older who should be at their peak even if that peak is league one and older journeymen coming to the end of their careers, very very uninspiring.

Good signing IMO. Will be good for cover and we still have funds for 1 or 2 quality players.

He might not be if he's got the sulks because he was denied his PL move.

To be perfectly honest I'd be more than happy to take the chance. Because

a) It's obvious that we haven't come close to replacing him and will not do so if signings like McEverly are anything to go by

b) There is no evidence to suggest he wouldn't try as hard if denied a move, so it would be stupid to base a decision on it.

B - is not what I have heard about his little suntan issue!

For Cliff's sake!

Look, Clough knows the lad. He knows what he can do and think's he'll be a good addition as COVER for Harris/defence.
As it says on the OS he's played for two season at Swindon who finished in the top eight for the last two seasons...

Yes, we'd like some quality coming in. But this is not a bad decision for one year/option two.

Just don't understand why people unhappy at this?

Perhaps NC should explain his signing strategy - because like many I'm struggling to understand it. The main criteria appears to be are they cheap. We are now awash with average players when we would have been better adding 3 or 4 quality players to what we already had.

B - is not what I have heard about his little suntan issue!

Well rumours aren't evidence, but even so, were this true I seriously doubt he would maintain the same attitude throughout an entire season of fixtures when it was made clear to him that he wasn't leaving. What help would sulking be in the 90% of the season not played during a transfer window?

Sounds fucking shite if he lost his place to Jordan Stewart.

Nigel, don't piss about, turn him around before he gets to Shirecliffe.

Welcome to the club! Now prove that you're good enough to play for the 2014/ 15 League one champions

He's signed for Sheff Utd Swiss,not Brizzle,Orient,Preston or P'boro;):D

On the subject of the player himself, very uninspiring but lets give the lad a chance before we bite his fucking eard off.

End of the transfer window is a better time to judge Clough on the whole, lets just wait and see.

There could be worse things happen,Porter could get a 5 year contract extension;)

End of the season, Christmas or perhaps 10 games in is the time to make judgements

Promotion is ours

So we have signed a player who is only 29, as cover, for full back and CB who has nearly 50 premiership games, 150 games in the league above us and 60 in this division (in a team who have finished top 8 the last 2 seasons) for free..... as cover, and people are not happy with this?

Who should we be signing as backup for bob and co? Bale? Evra? That lad from Everton, Baines is it? He has experience at this level and above, will fill in where needs be. Why the big hoo har? Dont think he will be the last of our business in this window, he has been signed as back up, relax, as Swizzler says, Promotion is sorted. These are just signings to provide talking points :D Clough is probably just a bit bored.

No 'tribunal' fees any more - the 'Elite Player Performance Plan' (aka the 'Premiership clubs being able to cherry pick who they want for a pittance'-plan) did away with that.

By my (dog-rough reckoning), we'd have gotten maybe £250k for Harry if it had gone through EPPP:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elite_Player_Performance_Plan

5 years at our Academy (2006 - 2011), with first appearance at age 18 = he started in our academy at age 13 = 3 years at £40k / year (assuming we're still a Category A academy) = £120k

5 Championship appearances = bollock all

129 League One (plus Cup runs etc.) appearances = £100k (sum for reaching 100 appearances) + £30k (sum for a further 30)

£120k + £130k = £250k

EPPP really is a right royal rogering up the 'arris for a League One or Two club. If we'd been a Chamionship club, we'd've gotten £445k by the same reckoning. A Premiership club would have gotten just over £2 million for the same player (although both those numbers assume playing 130 games in that League).

The Tribunal fee - if that system still existed - would probably have been about £350k up front, with another £50k or so for every milestone number of appearances for Hull (30, 60, 90 appearances seems to have been the favourite benchmark), plus about a 20% sell-on clause. So we'd still get shafted, but not quite so badly - they'd at least use lube.

I can see clearly you've evidenced your post in detail and researched diligently. I suggest you find another forum / support another team!!

I seriously hope that we batter Coventry with a fantastic performance from all players. But its not just because I always want us to win. Its now mainly because it would shut some of you up degrading the lad without you ever seeing him play for us yet (like you did Campbell-Ryce at the time) and Clough even though we've only played two games this season. One of which we won! Apologies for my patience with some running thin but it drives me up the wall!

Good luck to the guy I say.

What would you say if that £2.5M was closer to £4.5M including add ons etc or maybe £750,000 via a tribunal?

It's an uninspiring signing but is very solid backup. There is though a much bigger issue in that we have a couple of other positions who we still need first choice bloody players for.

Alcock, whose primary position is right back, can cover left back, but at the moment he's covering central defence. Meanwhile, we have an aging midfielder who (despite a good performance in the League Cup) is covering right back... and has now played 180 minutes the last week. Not to mention that our most experienced (and presumably most 'solid') central defenders were given a run around by a team in the league below us on Saturday.

Quality back-up is a wonderful luxury to be able to afford. But it shouldn't be the priority at the moment - especially when bringing in first choice players will free up other players to move into their best roles.
