Jamal Blackman

Am I the only one who hopes he has a really off season?

Wish him well after that :)

He’s on circa £15k p/wk at Chelsea. That being the case, I don’t think he’d be keen to leave on a permanent deal just yet. His stock isn’t high enough yet to command that wage elsewhere.

I heard £24k. We paid him £12k/week last season and supposedly he was our highest paid player.

Blackman is a presence and a calming one at that. That counts for a lot. He was very good for us, brilliant shot stopper, great at crosses too.

Spot on. Last night proved we will struggle this season without a goalkeeper that can dominate his box. Young Henderson may be a good shot stopper but his lack of inches means a set of defenders that already had a poor record at defending the ball in the air now don't have someone to get them out of jail.

We can practice defending set pieces until the cows come home but if are coming up against teams who have half a dozen players 3 to 4 and in some cases 6 to 7 inches taller than you then you will struggle. Flint has scored two goals against us in the last 3 league games. He must love playing against us. Blackman last season seemed to solve a long standing problem. We've just gone and created it again.

Said it last season, said it this.
A keeper of Blackmans size changes the game on both sides.
We are happy he will come and get anything inside his 6 yard box, and sometimes beyond. Opponents will adjust their tactics to avoid Blackman coming for it.

We made a mistake not getting Blackman permanently, hindsight is a wonderful thing but as it now seems we can’t spend our money on a striker we might have been better set spending on a keeper and loaning the striker

Exactly - people like Flint are a consistent and prominent threat at this level, as were others like Maguire before him. Boro are a very big side and will bully many opponents this season.

That said, that physical intimidation was much, much less of a factor last season with Jamal. You could tell sides weren't about to fuck about with him. His presence alone also forces sides to double think their set plays as he's likely to get a hand to most things, and the delivery needed to be more precise.

I really think we've dropped a bollock with not getting him in permanently. Especially seeing as we didn't spend anywhere else instead, except at centre half. I may be in a minority here, but I really think we've missed out here, he'll have a stellar career, will make the top flight and could have benefitted us as part of that.

Absolutely, we should have spent on him - no doubt on that.

Teams will fancy their chances in the box against Henderson and he's never coming here permanently anyway, is he?

We'd have been as well investing in making Jamal an SUFC player.

...it's the first time I've felt this way since we opted against stumping up the cash for Coady, and look how well that turned out.

I don't think you are in the minority. If we couldn't afford him permanently this season why didn't we loan him? He's sat on Weeds bench now wasting away. Millwall, Bolton, Preston, Stoke are all teams with physical aerial presence. Millwall battered Boro on Saturday with a team on a considerably lower budget than ours. They have the likes of Morrison and Jake Cooper in their team. QPR no doubt on Saturday will be warming up Matt Smith to come on and dominate us in the air. We just shown the rest of the country our biggest weakness so they will be preparing accordingly.

Blackman is seriously a top keeper who will have a career in the PL.

Too early to judge Henderson yet - he can't help the mess that's happening in front of him - but on height and presence alone, Blackman is far superior.

Consorting with a friendly Leeds fan? Don’t feel right somehow. It’s like getting my Gary Glitter LP’s out again.
