Jake Wright (the defender)

I thought Deano let Derby get quite close to him on a few occasions but I love his cockyness.
Stick to the PS4 (Hando apparently isn’t keen for a proper discussion so just chucks out the odd random insult instead)

To this day I still think he’ll be useful off the bench to see games out. Stearman showed at Rotherham he can’t manage to slot in seamlessly mid game as he ended up partly at fault for the leveller late on. Wouldn’t expect that from Wright.

That’s not me saying he’s a better player but a better option off the bench? Possibly.

Either that or I hope he gets a good move to the top end of League One. He deserves it.

I pointed out a long time ago, to the usual derision, that Wright was finished at United. No apologies necessary.

And Wright is the best talker we have.

There's one or two on here who have taken up that mantle but I wouldn't like to see them in the team either. Wright hardly played last season and hasn't kicked a ball in anger this season. If we're going for a promotion push a L1 has-been, bereft of match fitness and who can't make the bench these days is not quite what we need. Why there is a suddden upsurge of enthusiasm on behalf of Jake Wright is a mystery.

Nobody is suggesting he starts over any of the current crop. Not one person on this forum. That’s in your head.

There was someone in the post directly before mine who was extolling his virtue of being the "best talker" we have not to mention the post just before that where someone suggested he should be ahead of Stearman. I must get my head tested if this wasn't the case.

I’ve not said he wasn’t? But quite clearly having 4 centre halves caused on caused a mix up at the back. We haven’t done it since.

I can’t agree that Wright would have stopped individual balls-ups by Johnson, Stevens, Norwood and/or Basham any more than Stearman, to be honest. Sometimes it’s just one of those days

Last time I checked being the best talker doesn’t constitute saying he should be in the team, and Stearman is nothing but a bench warmer.

He’s a far better centre-back than Wright. Jake will retire with a very modest career record (by professional standards) for good reason. Richard Stearman will retire with a significantly better one, again for good reason.

This debate became redundant a long time ago, as Snooty rightly observes.

And they’re very different players so what your point?

His time has passed but I wonder whether there's a position at the club on the coaching staff for Jake. He certainly knows the basics of defending and part of why his was brought in was his attitude.

He’ll play on when his time at United ends - and will drop back down to non-league if he has to

Having Jake Wright fit wouldn't do any harm, just to work with the rest of the players in training and development games, even if he never sets foot in the first team again.

There are a lot of players with more ability than him, but it's what you do with that ability that's important and even someone like Egan could probably learn stuff from him when it comes to reading the game and playing to your strengths.

I don't think Stearman has much future here. Unlike Wright, who improved with age, Stearman has been in decline for years and isn't really suited to a back three. He's OK for benchwarming for the rest of the season, but like with Wright, we've moved beyond his level now.

Linked with a loan move to Scunthorpe, Fleetwood, Doncaster and Barnsley.

I bloody love Jake, I wouldn't be adverse to him being in our side still, he's brilliantly committed.

Also makes you wonder, our squad has an excellent atmosphere and a fantastic style of play, it must be brilliant to be a part of and it must be disappointing to leave it and go elsewhere. What Wilder and Knill has built is special and unique, it isn't elsewhere.
