Jake Wright (the defender)

He'll never get away with being U23!

Thats like when i was playing for Calver U12's as a 10 year old. We played Dove Holes U12's and they were always a physical side. However, on this particular game they put out an entirely different side, beating us 13-1.

They got thrown out of the league after the game though as they were playing 16 year old players with Moustaches!

Was it boys or girls junior football?

Love Wright, dedicated unassuming pro.

As has been alluded too though, can any captain allow for:

Hendo's mistake
Norwood's pass against WBA
Norwood clearing the ball to the Rotherham forward?

There's 7 points lost right there, of our own doing.

The stats speak for themselves. We've done very well with Jake in the team. Unbeaten in league one, and even in the championship his stats are pretty good!

The bouncing of Jake Eright is interesting.

Some of us extolled the virtues of Jake TO the team over Stearman - mainly about how he marshalled the defence. He didn't actually do a lot other than sit, talk to Bash and JOC and give the ball to Coutts. He was the master of 2 touch football but played a roll that made us a decent team not only in L1 but after Stearman got injured early last season.

I see NO ONE has mentioned the fact that one of the few upgrades to last seasons team was Egan in for Stearman - made by Chris Wilder. Some actually wanted both Stearman and Egan in the same team.

Did CW see something that some of us saw with Stearman.

Just for the record - Stearman isn't a bad footballer - but he has never fitted into how we play a 3 man central defence.

UTB

I think sometimes its about taking an opportunity. Now we have two excellent centre halves for that slot

A proper captain (a proper captain being someone who can open their gob and make sure the rest of the team are switched for the duration of the game) would have been telling Henderson to blast the f***er into the stand and a proper captain would have been telling Norwood he had bags of time on the ball (instead of Norwood panicking and putting the ball straight on a plate for the Rotherham equaliser). That's the type of things proper captains do. Please do feel free to "quote me" to your readership if you like on the subject of proper captains.
I’m intrigued who you class as a ‘proper captain’ then for United, since by your criteria not one of their teammates will ever have made an individual balls-up as they’ll have been on hand to shout things like ‘don’t pass straight to their winger, Deano’. Alternatively, football is largely an individual sport so individual errors will happen and the role of captain is largely irrelevant. Opinions eh?

Name a great side that didn't have a great captain.

One of the best readers of a game we've had in the backline for many years, alongside McGrath and Maguire. The latter was also ridiculously underatted by a large proportion of our fanbase, whilst others were coining terms like the English Pique ;). Reading the game is the key requirement of a defender in the centre of a back three. It didn't take Wilder long to work Stearman out as I told you he would. He's a reactive defender, not an anticipator; better in aback for than a three Some defenders have terrific physical attributes (Jagielka, Walker); some are brutes who will head everything away and bully opponents (Morgan, Stearman); others see the full picture early, get the ball and bail their teamates out of the shit (often coming off the pitch with a clean kit). Our system requires the man in the centre of the three to be the latter. That said, a shame Wright isn't five years younger, a head taller, a bit better in the air and a lot quicker - he'd be world class then.

Egan was brought in to help us win a few more headers in the box as we were pissinging goals from not winning second balls into the box & set pieces etc .. Wright’s different tyoe of CH better in the deck & with distribution but nowhere near as good in the air .. Jakes done his bit but L1 is his level

Has been fantastic for the club but was always going to one of those players that helped push us on and would then fall back in the pecking order.

I can see Callum Semple possibly taking his place in the squad over the next 12 months to try and push to the first team.

It was a pathetic and unnecessary attempt at a clearance when he could and should have brought the ball down, looked up and found a man
As posted above by another he fucked up against Rotherham as well. I love Norwood but am able to see the whole picture with any of our players and really have no interest whatsoever in blowing smoke up arses

It’s not a clearance, it’s a misplaced pass. When you make as many as he does, it’s bound to happen. It’s not a dangerous area to give it away.

I really don’t see the need to pay him out for this one. The Rotherham one however was definitely his fault.

Not a good player but a great captain was Mike Brearley!
No doubt there are great captains, mate. Just think the cult of the captain is a bit exaggerated. Morgs was a great captain for one but his qualities didn’t depend on a piece of elastic around his bicep

Name one that didn’t have great players but a great captain?
PS, by the apparent criteria of a great captain being a shouty centre-half, Sheffield United 2016/17 for one :)

I went to great pains to say communication not barking or shouting. No wonder your rag is the laughing stock it is when a stellar journalist in it's employ dosent attribute the right response to the right contributor.

It wasn't a misplaced pass. It was a totally gash hack clearance a la Stephen Quinn at his best. Watch it again and get back to me.

Nobody. Absolutely nobody has suggested a good captain depends on a piece of elastic. You need to stop digging on this thread mate.

Do they communicate by smoke signals then? Employment seems a bit irrelevant but it’s ‘its employ doesn’t attribute’. You should apply for a job :D Merry Christmas Bill! Enjoy the rest of your day :)

Great effort for the "Most nonsense in a paragraph post of the year" category.
You enjoy also.

A fine CB who suffers, as most of us do, with an age problem. It must be about time to bring on a youngster from the academy system. We have a reputation for producing great defenders and we could do with making a few £s out of them. Semples been talked about for some time and according to reports from up North the lads progressed playing mens football Working with Wright would further any young CB's development

Dan I really hope you've noticed today that Henderson has learnt the hard lesson (if not you shouldn't be reporting on football), 3 or 4 times he's at to resort to blasting the ball from back passes. Well done, Deano, keep it up for the rest of the seasons, if in doubt your defensive head should kick in because you're not going to get much assistance from your colleagues! However, if you'd had a proper captain alongside you v Leeds (let's say Chris Morgan for example, lesson 1 you wouldn't dare ignore him, lesson 2 do what a proper captain tells you and you'll not go far wrong, Dan the fact you have to ask what a proper captain brings to me suggests you don't really have a clue about proper football, and it might be best to stick to PS4 old love) you wouldn't have to learn the harsh lessons and we'd (United) would have come away with a point. This is the same in other games (ie Rotherham away) where daft mistakes (rather than honest mistakes) have cost us.

No, I had to ask what a proper captain is because it’s a nonsense saying but if casting aspersions about my football knowledge makes you feel better, crack on :D

I thought Deano let Derby get quite close to him on a few occasions but I love his cockyness.
