Outgoing? Jack O'Connell

Tottenham are preparing to make a bid for Sheffield United's English defender Jack O'Connell, 25, and he is seen by Spurs as being a long-term replacement for Belgium international Jan Vertonghen, 32.

No surprise the way we have been playing, but can we hang onto him? Not sure how long his contract has to run, or how much might we might be prepared to accept if it got to silly money.

You’ve omitted the source on the copy & paste, which is the Daily Star on the BBC gossip roundup, most of which is printed rumour – this isn’t being reported by any BBC correspondents, and given the original source should be treated with far more scepticism.

Just read the same rumour on the grauniad but it says that he is out of contract in the summer. Am hoping that it's a mistake on their part.

It is. He's here till 2023. It's a story to fill a bit of space that they have seen somewhere else.

It`s maybe one for the summer this, no way can I see us letting him go this window.

Would be difficult for JOC to turn away from eye watering wages, which blow ours out of the water.

Spurs don't offer eye watering wages though.

Yeah they'll offer more than us, but until recently Kane was only on 80k a week and players like Son are on less.

Agree that if JOC was going to go somewhere mainly for the $$$, Spurs would be the worst choice of all the so called 'big clubs' as their wage structure, whilst still dwarfing Utd's, doesn't get close to Man U, Man C, Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal. He may even realise more at clubs like Leicester and Everton than Spurs.

However, I could understand the lure of moving to London, going to a club with top 4 ambitions and even the Mourinho factor.

Any guess what he`d be on at the Lane?
Must be one of the top earners, £35k??

It's paper talk because there's been so little concrete stuff to report on all the football/media/pundits are getting desperate for something, anything to talk about. Having said that with his Mrs away in Lyon JOC could not be criticized too much if he was tempted to look at something that made his domestic arrangements easier. Don't think this will work for him though.

We can't really stand in the way of any player that wants a bigger club and financial security for life. We are fortunate that our club now knows where to get these players from. Buy 'em cheap develop and sell on - it's the circle of life :)

With McCabe off the scene for good this is the start of the great asset sell off that will see us below Chesterfield in 5 years. We're doomed.

I’d be more worried about him going if McCabe was on the scene.

He won’t be going anywhere in this window... there is no pressure to sell and with McSell gone the old line of we can’t stand in their way has too.

JOC to Spurs, followed by "Tottenham preparing a bid"................... So not necessarily then. Disparity between the two ?😉

I doubt he would go this month but he is one of the two or three I’m fully expecting to have to replace in the summer. (Along with Egan and possibly Fleck)

If he was to leave us I would hope it would be for someone better than Tottenham.

I mean, I could see it happening but Spurs aren't exactly known for throwing money around. We can't match them for wages but I can't see them offering anywhere near enough. But then I guess it would be how badly he wanted to leave. I'd say, not so much probably.

Couple of things to note.

The new contract is signed to protect the club, this is done so when a player leaves the value is increased due to buying out the remaining contract, famously done at Man Utd with Ronaldo, the contract will not stop any move should the club and player accept terms, just means the selling club get top whack and the player gets a pay increase in the interim, which of course the new club has to top, so a win win situation for the selling club and player - that’s why they sign new contracts before they move sometimes..

Secondly, the quote we don’t need the money / we don’t need to sell.

Somebody who’s from saudi needs about £40 million for a hotel, academy, and stadium, should spurs offer £35m plus clauses rising to £40mill, it’ll be bye bye baby.. and we all know it..

I’m serious about £40m as that’s the least we should take - so he was £300k ? (To my memory) that’ll be £39.7m profit before Brentford get their slice... let that sink in before saying he’s going nowhere..

Love O’Connell but we should expect to be tested some time soon..
