Why has everybody decided that O Connell is going? What have I missed? Loads of threads where people are putting "when O Connell goes....."

Is there anything concrete in this or is it just Shit Yourself United fans back in action? I remember the hour long meltdown when Flecks missus posted a vague comment on Instagram...

I heard he was refusing to play until you had burned your Colombia shirt, I’m guessing that was false ha ha

Everything that's put on social media is true. JoC isn't injured and is about to be sold to Liverpool rather than them go for an established and proven top level centre half, they're interested in Jack to fill out their bench. The fact that none of these rumors seem to be coming from the Liverpool side shouldn't be seen as anything other than pure coincidence. Wilder is 100% lying to us, and Jack is on his way.

But Jack wears a magic hat that no one else but our fans can see and maybe now Klopp can see it too, all makes logical sense to me

Missing any one of our three regular centre backs is a problem for us, missing two is a disaster. Going forward we really do need some appropriate cover.

I don't disagree with you, but where we are at this moment as a club is not where we can afford the £20/30 million it would cost for suitable ready made back up.

I'd hate us to risk him if he's not 100% fit. Fleck looked half of himself against Newcastle.

I actually think that is why he didn't feature against Man Utd. I think this is a more realistic match for him to return now after 2 full weeks recovery.

we need to have a thorough look at our youth set-up and what is going drastically wrong at the moment. There's no pipeline.

I'm not overly convinced at his ability to play in a top Premier League back four to be honest. I could see a mid-table team being interested or tops someone like Everton, but there's a huge question mark there.

I don't have any question marks.
He's a good reader of the game, incredible aerially, mobile, good on the ball and never gets beaten one by one.

He's in the top 10 centre halves in this division quite comfortably for me. Some at the top 6 clubs can't even defend.
VVD, Gomez, Laporte, Maguire, Alderweireld, Vertonghen, JOC, Coady, Soyuncu, Ake.

I'm not convinced he'd look anywhere near as good in a flat back 2. same for Egan and Bash. They all compliment each other. He has hardly pulling up sticks when we signed him. I suspect he'd need someone quick next to him in order to do well. They're at a premium.

It doesn’t matter whether you’re convinced, or if I am, it’s what other managers believe that counts. Plenty of people questioned whether Maguire was good enough for Man U but they still paid £80m for him.

Of course. However, and this goes for several of our players, we're seemingly not fighting off numerous offers. I would suspect a question mark, in terms of how they would perform in a 4-4-2, hangs over a number of them.

You forgot David Luiz! :)

Four years ago we were in league one and any promising teenagers signed were for that level.
Due to our rapid rise you really can't expect many 14/15 years old signed then to be up to Premier league football now.

Oh, agreed, but the mammoth gap between the first team, 3 or 4 L1 development players and the youth set-up is glaring. I don't expect us to have 18-23 year old who are ready to challenge for a first team spot. I do expect to have 18-23 year olds who are good enough to go on loan to the Championship.

We've systematically failed to set-up a pathway between youth and first team for many, many years. The successes, and we've had some great successes, have felt like blind luck/anomolies in development terms.

We've excelled that quickly it's hard for the Academy to catch up. It's a work in progress.

Agreed, but I'm talking more about the gap between Academy and first team. What we used to refer to as the development squad. Our U-23s is normally full of U-18s.

Were a Cat 2 academy and can't attract the cream of the crop, if we do get a gem then the Cat 1 clubs come along and can buy them for a pittance. It must be a hopeless task trying to convince these lads not to move on unless they are Blades fanatics.
