International scouting: Why hasn't this been done?

I just can't see it being an issue of finance sending someone over there to watch for a few weeks, it must cost at most 5k or so.

I'm in favour of the club establishing an international scouting network. If you shop in a bigger market, you've got a better chance of finding value for money.

However, the idea that you can just hand someone a plane ticket and tell them to "go and watch a few matches in Europe" and expect to uncover a gem is not realistic.

United used to have access to videos of most matches in most European leagues. Not sure if we've still got that, but scouts do watch a lot of games on video/live on TV, which should be a lot less expensive than having them travel all over Europe to look for players.
All clubs in Germany have access to live games and videos from all over Europe, for assessment. So I assume SUFC would have the same if they so wish. Whether that will continue after Brexit, who knows. I have argued for a while that there is little difference between the culture of English and German football. Wilder has a plan and so far it doesn't appear to include players outside the UK. Wilder himself has said he is always looking to progress. The time for this debate proper should be in a few years time if we haven't progressed.

In case you missed it. Utd trialled another French youngster in the U23s last Friday.

What you have to consider with foreign players is two things adapting to the phyiscal side of the game and the weather. Many top sides have avoided buying top players because of these factors. Some top foreign players have struggled with the English game.
