As I start this thread we are wining three nil against Crewe. Ok, so its only Crewe. But looking at the table we are only 10 points from a potential play off place. Can we do it? You bet we can. :)
Onwards Upwards.
FFS Crewe have just scored, but my thread still stands.

mathematically we can, realistically we cant, but I hope to be wrong!

We're now seeing the difference it makes when you get someone who actually knows what they're doing.

It's a long season, so bags of time and games to push on up the league.

But, small steps are needed. We've had a good week which is breeding confidence.

Well done Clough and the boys

Don't forget its still only October, so plenty of time. It is a mountain to climb though.

the thing that makes me laff is how under Weir we were relegation certs after 10 or so games and now about 3 games later we're talking about promotion, we're not fickle much are we?!!

Nope, not fickle at all. We stick by the Blades through thick and thin (mostly thin) from the age of 5 when we have no idea what will be ahead of us when we catch Blade Itus, until the grim reaper spoils the party.
The fickle lot are the prawn sarnie brigade, who change their allegiances and clubs more than a lady of the night changes her drawers.

Thing is Crewe were only the width of a crossbar from making it 3-2 and the last 10-15 minutes we looked knackered. They were the poorest team I've seen this season so lets keep things in perspective. The P'boro result was better in my opinion

I had a discussion with a Hibs fan and an Everton fan last night about the lengths we go to for our clubs, only to be disappointed and let down.

Man U, AC Milan and maybe even Celtic fans rarely endure the crap that we do.

So when we get a sniff of hope, we either revel in it or some become sceptical.

Through thin and thinner we still can't help but follow. It's an addiction and an affliction

In fairness the question was can we do it. Of course we can. We could get promoted automatically if we went on a run and got things back on the rails. Doesn't mean it will happen or that many of us expect it to.

Nothing fickle about hoping.

After 14 games last season, Bournemouth were 19th with 15pts having just replaced their manager.

Then their next 18 matches from 27th October to 12th February went like this.

WWWWDDWWWWDDLWWWWW

That was one hell of a run.

Exactly, and there's no reason why we can't put a decent run like that together in this Division.

The similarities are also there with funds as well, they had a bit of a cash injection and brought in Richie and Pitman in January who undoubtedly made the difference in the end.

errmm..on reflection, weir has destroyed the first quarter of ther season..sadly it is no....

Erm, I've read the post! I'm talking in more general terms - there's certainly plenty out there that think we're out of a promotion race.

The thing conveniently being ignored is the standard of our team. I wouldn't back us to get in the top 6, if we were in it already. Never mind about 5th from bottom. We do still have an often dodgy back 4, a load of poor inconsistent or underachieving midfielders and an old man and a kid up front. The top 5 (possibly excepting Orient but they have an amazing knack of winning games) look much stronger on paper than us, then there's Coventry who would be 4th in the league without the 10 point deduction. We're probably not miles behind the rest in terms of squad but those 6 could pull miles clear.

So far we've got 1 point out of 7 away games. If i tell you we've already lost more away games this season, than we did for the entirety of last season, that puts talk of the play offs in some perspective. Altogether last season we lost 9 games, this season we've already lost 8 games. With 32 still to play.

But, but, but... Bournemouth did it last season so we'll do it!

First away win o't season Satdi - I can feel it in me waters, ah tell thee.
That's the thing about United. We can be as optimistic or pessimistic as we choose.
It was my belief that Weir was preaching a way forward that would take us up. (silly me)
A glutton for punishment, I now think that Cloughie, WILL take us up. The difference being that Mr Clough, will take hold of Weir's principles as they are on all fours with his own. ie The need to obtain points by playing good football

Weir's team, whatever you say about tactics etc, could have gained more points than they did, it wasn't as if we were well beaten week in week out. Even at Wolves, it was widely accepted that we were the better team until they scored. Given that Wolves are most people's choice as Champions elect, that shows that the team isn't as bad as the League table shows.

I don't think people are saying we WILL do it, but that it IS possible as Bournemouth showed last season. In reality, a top 10 finish from here on in will be seen as a success this season, but as people are saying, a few wins on the board in the next few weeks and we'll have the momentum. A couple of decent signings in January and who knows.

Imagine the impact of a 32 match unbeaten run on the table
